Inverting The Corporate Pyramid (Lessons From An Infantryman), Robert Clements

This presentation outlines a different Mental Model of organizational structures and upends the Corporate Pyramid and balances it on it point. This inverted model places the leaders at the bottom of the pyramid and defines loose roles for each successive layer. The top most layer represents the interface of the organization to its external enviroment. Unlike traditional top down structures, this model seeks to identify that poor implementation of various aspects of job performance can send fault lines up through the organization. The foundational managements perspective is that they support the work force above it and that all levels must …

The Dynamics of Civil Resistance (DOCR), is a not-for-profit popular education and cultural development programme in Oceania. We work in collaboration with churches, human rights organisations, traditional leaders, women leaders, youth and student groups and community organisations to establish a network of indigenous educators who can resource nonviolent social movements and democratic transitions.
DOCR has developed out of programs that originated in 2005, in response to requests from Papuan human rights activists (Rayfield and Morello 2012). The purpose of the Project is to build their capacity of activists and artists working nonviolently for a just and sustainable peace in the …

As a small satellite moves further from Earth a lot of mission elements change. More power and/or a larger antenna is needed for communications, fuel requirements increase and mission operations become more complex. What doesn’t change significantly is the set of laws and regulations that the program and spacecraft must operate under. This paper reviews, principally, the impact of the International Trafficking in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 on the development, discrimination of information about and operations of small satellite programs. It reviews the duties imposed by ITAR, the exemptions enjoyed, particularly, …

Can Policy To Address Some Rights Address Breaches Of Other Disability Rights?, Sally Robinson, Karen Fisher Assoc Prof
Professor Sally Robinson
Governments must implement the UN CRPD. In practice, government prioritises policies relating to some rights more highly than others. This unequal implementation relates in part to constraints on government, including competing interests, multiple participants and incremental policy change. In the context of these constraints, can differential policy priorities address breaches of other disability rights? This paper tests this question in relation to support for people living in boarding houses in Queensland, focusing particularly on residents with intellectual disability. Among the core disability rights are the rights to housing and housing support (Article 19). For some people living in boarding houses, …

In Vanuatu, communities have expressed a desire to continue leading lifestyles based on a traditional economic base. In the context of economic globalisation, however, this possibility is being ignored or denied by government policy decisions made on the basis of ‘economic rationalism’. There is growing concern that these government decisions are in fact destructive of ‘popular cultural expressions’, and do not respect the values of the community in relation to its development.
In 2006, an ‘Economic opportunities fact-finding mission’ to the Pacific Island nation of Vanuatu was sponsored by NZAID and AusAID. The report that followed recognized that ‘many of …

How Can Diversity Management Make A Difference? Massachusetts' Commonwealth Compact Initiative, Michael P. Johnson Jr., Georgianna Melendez

Commonwealth Compact is a unique membership-driven diversity initiative. Commonwealth Compact combines a practitioner focus on best practices and systems change and an academic grounding in theory, data and analysis. We argue that evaluating the social benefits and costs of programs like Commonwealth Compact is difficult but essential, and provide a conceptual framework for doing so.

The above-titled presentation was given as a plenary presentation at the Annual Symposium of the Joint Council on International Children’s Services (JCICS) on April 18, 2012. Herein is a slightly modified version of the Power Point used at the presentation. We corrected some typos and made some editorial adjustments, but this is 99% the same as what was used at the presentation. Unfortunately the event itself was not taped.
It is important to note that the original context for this presentation is Intercountry Adoption to the United States. However, some of you may find some of these points relevant to …
Child Feeding Practices Of Head Start Parents And Safeguarding The Oral Health Of Very Young Children, Elizabeth T. Powers
Child Feeding Practices Of Head Start Parents And Safeguarding The Oral Health Of Very Young Children, Elizabeth T. Powers
Elizabeth T Powers
Dentists serving children in a Head Start program attributed dental problems in preschoolers to parent feeding practices. In particular, parents' use of sippy cups and bottles promotes long exposure of teeth to sugars, causing cavities. This presentation reports the preliminary findings from a survey of feeding practices of parents whose children using a dental clinic. Holding constant child's age and other factors, Head Start parents' feeding practices differ from other parents' in several important respects. While Head Start parents report ending bottle use earlier in the child's life, their intensity of sippy cup use is high, and they more frequently …
