The Interactive Effects Of Caffeine And Phase Of Menstrual Cycle On The Recall Of Prose Passages, Jacqueline Marie Mcpherson Aug 1995

The Interactive Effects Of Caffeine And Phase Of Menstrual Cycle On The Recall Of Prose Passages, Jacqueline Marie Mcpherson

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has yielded inconsistent results regarding the effects of caffeine on memory. Such inconsistency is likely to a large extent a function of the complex interaction effects of caffeine and other variables such as estrogen. The purpose of the present study was to discern possible variation in the effects of caffeine on the recall of prose for females tested during days 1-5 or 9-13 of their menstrual cycle. One hundred and seven subjects received either O mg/kg, 2 mg/kg, or 4 mg/kg of caffeine. Following an absorption period, subjects read six passages from a computer terminal and immediately afterwards, …

The Hormones Of Pregnancy Alter Somal Size In The Medial Preoptic Area Of The Rat Brain, Lori A. Keyser May 1995

The Hormones Of Pregnancy Alter Somal Size In The Medial Preoptic Area Of The Rat Brain, Lori A. Keyser

Master's Theses

Formerly non-responsive females will display maternal behavior (MB) following pregnancy and parturition. The behavioral alterations are believed to occur in response to hormonal changes that accompany pregnancy. The medical pre optic area (MPOA) regulates hormone-induced MB. The current study examined neuronal changes which might account for the modified behavior. Twenty adult female Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned a hormone condition: ovariectomized (OVX), ovariectomized/hormone-treated (P+E2), intact diestrus (DI), or pregnant (PREG). Animals were killed, and their brains fixed in Golgi-Cox solution. Somata of the MPOA and related cortex were measured in each group using a Bioquant imaging system. Pregnant females …

The Effects Of Caffeine On Operant Behavior In The Mongolian Gerbil, Stephanie L. Myers Jan 1989

The Effects Of Caffeine On Operant Behavior In The Mongolian Gerbil, Stephanie L. Myers

Honors Theses

The present study looks at the effects of stomach loads of caffeine on operant behavior in Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus). Four male and four female gerbils were trained to a fixed interval schedule of 30 seconds with Noyes 4.5 mg rodent pellets used for reinforcement. A data collection and analysis package for Apple computers was used to measure the post-reinforcement response frequencies and number of reinforcements. Data was collected using a baseline of saline stomach loads of 1% of body weight, and then stomach loads of ascending concentrations caffeine mixed with saline (10, 20, 40, 60 mg/kg) with two to …

The Effects Of Marijuana Smoking On Human Subjects: A Literature Review, Gregory Roth Burmeister Jul 1979

The Effects Of Marijuana Smoking On Human Subjects: A Literature Review, Gregory Roth Burmeister

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This paper is a critical review of current research on the effects of marijuana use in human subjects. The first three sections provide basic information on the pharmacology of marijuana, the methodological difficulties in marijuana research, and the subjective effects associated with its use. The main body of the paper deals with psychological and physiological effects separately.

The Effects Of Meteorological Variables On Certain Sleep Characteristics, John David Moffitt Jan 1977

The Effects Of Meteorological Variables On Certain Sleep Characteristics, John David Moffitt

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This thesis reports an investigation of the relationship between the meteorological variables of barometric pressure, humidity, precipitation, temperature, wind velocity, and wind direction and the sleep characteristics of reported latency of sleep upon retiring for the evening, reported number of awakenings during the sleep period, reported latency of return to sleep following an awakening; reported number of dreams during the sleep period, reported frequency of sound as opposed to light sleep, and reported latency of feeling awake and alert following the sleep cycle.

The Effect Of Progesterone On Food And Water Intake And Weight In The Adult Male Rats After Stomach Loads Of Hypertonic Saline, Michael D. Smith Jan 1973

The Effect Of Progesterone On Food And Water Intake And Weight In The Adult Male Rats After Stomach Loads Of Hypertonic Saline, Michael D. Smith

Master's Theses

Eight adult male albino rats were randomly assigned to each treatment condition of progesterone injections (0,10,40, and ·100 mg/kg/day dissolved in Bee of sesame seed oil), and all 2s received a hypertonic NaCl stomach loading. A control group for procedural effects was given injections of sesame seed oil alone and isotonic NaCl stomach loads. The dependent variables were body weight, food intake and water intake. Single factor analyses of covariance revealed a significant difference between the 0 mg progesterone group and the control group for food and water intake but not weight. No significant differences were found in food and …
