Addressing Mental Health, Substance Abuse, And Recidivism In The Juvenile Justice System, Danielle N. Gieschen

Theses and Dissertations

Research has shown links between mental health concerns, substance abuse concerns, and recidivism for youth. However, the vast majority of studies have not examined the impact that receiving services or treatment compliance has on this relationship. In this study, mental health concerns, mental health treatment, alcohol and substance abuse concerns, alcohol and substance abuse treatment and recidivism within the juvenile justice system were examined. The electronic and paper probation files and the paper court files for 77 youth were examined to determine the impact that receiving mental health or substance abuse services has on reducing the likelihood of recidivism. Furthermore, …

Bonds Beyond Time: Are There Differences In Well-Being, Autonomy, And Bond Between Visually Impaired Individuals With Guide Dogs Versus Pet Dogs?, Nicole Yarmolkevich

Theses and Dissertations

Well-being is a broad umbrella term that encompasses an individual’s appraisal of situations and events and their satisfaction with life (Diener, 1994). Research has shown that having a severe disability can negatively impact a person’s sense of well-being. Specifically, research has shown that individuals with visual impairments have a lower well-being because they feel like they are not as independent, they have many obstacles in their way, and they feel as if they are a bother to everyone around them (Lopez-Gusticia & Cordoba, 2008). To combat these obstacles, people with visual impairments opt to get a guide dog to help …

Effects Of Mood On Processing In Event-Based Prospective Memory, Rachel A. Workman Jun 2017

Effects Of Mood On Processing In Event-Based Prospective Memory, Rachel A. Workman

Theses and Dissertations

Different moods seem to elicit different processing styles (Hunt & McDaniel, 1993, Storbeck & Clore, 2005) and mood has been shown to affect retrospective memory in many ways. The current research investigated how induced mood affects event-based prospective memory (PM). The current study examined mood effects on focal and non-focal PM retrieval. Participants were induced into either a depressive or elated state using Velten statements directly prior to retrieval of the PM task. A main effect of task type was found, such that those in the focal condition completed the task quicker and more accurately than those in the non-focal …

The Impact Of Ethnic Identity On Psychological Well-Being And Perceived Discrimination Among Arab Americans, Rawan Atari May 2017

The Impact Of Ethnic Identity On Psychological Well-Being And Perceived Discrimination Among Arab Americans, Rawan Atari

Theses and Dissertations

The current study intended to expand upon psychological research on the Arab American community, which has faced increased discrimination since 9/11 and recent ISIS-related terrorist attacks. Since perceived discrimination has been associated with greater psychological distress among Arab Americans, it is important to determine whether any protective factors are available for this community. In a sample of Arab Americans, the relationship between perceived discrimination and aspects of psychological well-being (i.e., self-esteem, flourishing, and satisfaction with life) were examined in order to gain a better overall picture of Arab American mental health. Because ethnic identity has been recognized as a protective …

Cognitive Maps Of Educators' Attitudes Toward Unauthorized Immigrants: A Multidimensional Scaling Perspective, Kerry Pecho Apr 2017

Cognitive Maps Of Educators' Attitudes Toward Unauthorized Immigrants: A Multidimensional Scaling Perspective, Kerry Pecho

Theses and Dissertations

Legislative acts, political discourse, and social movements have highlighted how who immigrants are and where they are from play a substantial role in how they are received. Ewing (2012) noted that decisions regarding the U.S. immigration system are “often shaped more by public fears and anxieties than by sound public policy” (p. 2). The media often ignore the multiple challenges faced by immigrants and instead focus solely on their legal status (Nittle, 2012). Experiencing prejudice, on an individual and institutional level, has detrimental effects on the individual’s physical well-being, emotional well-being, and achievements and success in life. Research has indicated …

The Mediating Effect Of Self-Determined Motivation In Student-Athlete Perceptions Of Coaching Behaviors And Its Effect On Grit And Mental Toughness, Lloyd Scharneck Mar 2017

The Mediating Effect Of Self-Determined Motivation In Student-Athlete Perceptions Of Coaching Behaviors And Its Effect On Grit And Mental Toughness, Lloyd Scharneck

Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this current study was to examine the relationship between coaching behaviors, grit, mental toughness, and motivation. I hypothesized that coaching behaviors would have an indirect influence on grit and mental toughness through the motivational orientations of athletes. To examine these relationships, we surveyed 219 student athletes from Midwestern universities using valid and reliable measures assessing the key constructs in this study. Results revealed significant positive relationships between autonomy-supportive coaching, grit, mental toughness and autonomous motivation. Significant negative relationships between controlling coach, grit, and mental toughness were also found. Path analysis revealed two major findings. A significant positive …

Perceived Stress, Self-Compassion, And Emotional Variance In Parents Of Children With Communication Disorders: A Family Approach To Service Delivery In Speech-Language Pathology, Olivia Marie Arnos

Theses and Dissertations

The amount of children born with developmental disorders in the United States is on the rise, increasing from 12.8% in 1998 to 15.04% in 2008 (Huang, Chang, Chi & Lai, 2013). Children with developmental disabilities often have chronic conditions that require additional support across their lifetime, ranging in deficits of attention, physical abilities, visual impairments, hearing impairments, learning disabilities, and communication disorders. Research has shown as dependency of a child on caretakers increases, there is an increase in parental stress and a decrease in perceived well-being. Hall and Graff (2011) found parents of children with developmental disorders are less likely …

Religious Discrimination In Courtroom Oaths, Shannon M. Griffith Mar 2017

Religious Discrimination In Courtroom Oaths, Shannon M. Griffith

Theses and Dissertations

The current study investigated whether trust in Atheists moderates the relationship between prejudice against Atheists and belief in a hypothetical Atheists’ witness testimony. Pilot studies revealed that participants do not innately label witnesses who affirm as Atheists and determined that there was no significant difference between ratings of belief in Atheists witnesses in comparison to Christian witnesses. Responses from 185 MTurk participants confirmed that belief in witnesses did not significantly differ between Atheists and Christians. Furthermore, trust did not moderate the relationship between prejudice against Atheists and belief in the Atheist witness. These studies furthered research in distrust against Atheists …

Proactive Personality And Voluntary Turnover: The Moderating Effects Of Development And Perceived Career Opportunities, Amy F. Huber Mar 2017

Proactive Personality And Voluntary Turnover: The Moderating Effects Of Development And Perceived Career Opportunities, Amy F. Huber

Theses and Dissertations

The present thesis reports the research and quantitative examination of the relation

between proactive personality and voluntary turnover, as well as the moderating influences of participation in development activities and perceptions of available career opportunities. Zero- order correlations and moderated binary logistic regression are used to test the hypotheses within an archival data set of 295 participations from a multinational European organization. A significant correlation was found between proactive personality and participation in developmental activities. Additionally, participation in developmental activities was found to be a negative predictor of voluntary turnover. Results of the moderated logistic regression analysis showed that both …

Examining Different Reasons Why People Accept Or Reject Scientific Claims, Emilio J. C. Lobato Feb 2017

Examining Different Reasons Why People Accept Or Reject Scientific Claims, Emilio J. C. Lobato

Theses and Dissertations

The current project was designed to examine how cognitive style, cultural worldview, and conspiracy ideation correspond to various levels of agreement with scientific claims. Additionally, the kinds of justifications people provide for their position on scientific issues and the kinds of possible refutations of their scientific beliefs people are able to generate were qualitatively coded and analyzed. Participants were presented with a short survey asking about their level of agreement with scientific claims about biological evolution, anthropogenic climate change, pediatric vaccines, and genetically modified foods. Mediating The Relation Of Socioeconomic Risk And Kindergarten Readiness With Self-Regulation: Investigating The Moderating Role Of Teacher-Child Relationships, Leah Cohen Marks Feb 2017

Mediating The Relation Of Socioeconomic Risk And Kindergarten Readiness With Self-Regulation: Investigating The Moderating Role Of Teacher-Child Relationships, Leah Cohen Marks

Theses and Dissertations

School readiness is important for children, families, teachers, and schools. School readiness is defined as children’s preparedness to be successful in the kindergarten setting. It can encompass academic, social-emotional, and behavioral skills, all of which predict future outcomes (Duncan et al., 2007). School readiness can be particularly important for children at risk for school failure due to poverty (Ryan, Fauth, & Brooks-Gunn, 2013). Considering which risk and resilience factors may be present for these children is important. Another important variable is self-regulation, which includes voluntary control approach and withdrawal behavior tendencies including the ability to inhibit a dominant response and …
