Recovery from serious mental illness (SMI) promotes a lifestyle that enables individuals to overcome obstacles related to mental illness and to become hopeful, responsible, and empowered to contribute to society (Anthony, 1993; Jacobson & Greenley, 2001). This study addressed the mental health worker’s knowledge and attitudes toward recovery principles, utilizing an online survey method to examine the relationship between staff knowledge of and attitudes toward recovery principles among mental health professionals who work in inpatient psychiatric settings that serve adult patients. A Retrospective Comparison Of Adolescent Inpatients With Guardians Demonstrating Varied Levels Of Involvement In Treatment, Jacquelyn D'Amico

This retrospective study investigated differences in engagement between adolescent inpatients aged 13 to 17 whose guardians were involved in their treatment to varying degrees. Specifically, this study examined differences between adolescents whose guardians were involved via in-person contact with staff versus communication with staff solely by telephone in percentage of groups attended, number of restraints, and number of prior hospitalizations. Additionally, unit privileges were examined qualitatively. Data were collected and analyzed from 51 charts at a Mid-Atlantic acute inpatient psychiatric facility. In 2003, the New Freedom Commission on Mental Health articulated a call for mental-health-care service systems to transform their service systems to a recovery-oriented model. Current research regarding the integration of recovery-based services has predominantly been conducted in outpatient and community provider settings (Crane-Ross, Lutz & Roth, 2006; Deegan et al., 2008; Matthias et al., 2012; Salyers & Tsemeris, 2007; Solomon & Stanhope, 2004).
