This study is based on the assumption that there is a need for identifying, selecting, counseling, and developing teacher competencies and the recognition of the need for further studies in defining the good teacher. Such studies should contribute to more efficients methods of selecting and preparing teachers. The problem of selecting persons who are apt to make good teachers, and who have a reasonable high potential is of primary importance. Today, more than ever before, there is present an increasing emphasis on the part of educators to help the academically talented student develop his scholastic ability to its maximum level. Past experience has shown that there is a large number of talented students who are not achieving scholastically in terms of their apparent intellectual potentials. Research on the differences between achieving and underachieving talented students, has left unanswered many important questions concerned with this area of educational psychology.

The problem under investigation was whether or not intensive counseling as defined by the Pilot Intensive Counseling Organization at Deuel Vocational Institution would bring about a significant change in the relationship between a delinquent's self-concept and his ideal self-concept. The Q-sort was the instrument used to measure change as a result of therapy.

One of the major problems of the modern educational system is scholastic under-achievement by talented students. Until recently the typical study had been chiefly concerned with the correlation between level of ability and academic success, while many studies referred to the presumed relationship between emotional stability and academic achievement. On the college level such characteristics as failure to adjust to college life, poor study habits, lack of awareness of his real level of ability on the part of the student, and other such Causes have been tacitly assumed as the explanation for under- achievement
