Sex And Age Differences In The Labeling And Intensity Of Emotion, Marita Leonie Desselles

Master's Theses

In the present study, the relationship of sex and age of subject to emotion labeling, affect intensity and gender identity was examined. Subjects were 120 naive volunteers recruited from University of Rich-

mond undergraduate classes and community organizations, 60 of whom were male and 60 female. All participants were administered the Emotion Research Questionnaire (ERQ) along with the Bern Sex Role Inventory (BSRI). Dependent variables were the total number of anger responses (ERQ-A), Mean Affect Intensity (MN-INT) , Mean Anger Intensity (A-INT) and Mean Fear Intensity (F-INT). The BSRI gave Masc (BEM-M) and Fem (BEM-F) scores for each subject. Results …

Avoidance Learning Of Anxiety : An Application Of Signal Detection Theory, Maribeth Ekey

Master's Theses

The purpose of the present study was to test the appli cation of Signal Detection Theory to a model for the development of anxiety. An attempt was made to condi tion anxiety responses to decreasing magnitudes of a noxious stimulus through the negative reinforcement of avoidance behavior. An analogue based on Mandler and Watson's (1966) interruption theory was designed. Data from 32 male and female volunteers from the University of Richmond subject pool were used in the final analy sis. All students were pretested with Sarason's (1972) Test Anxiety Scale and placed in high- and low-anxiety groups according to …

Images Of Women And Men In Contemporary Pop Song: Production And Perception, Gloriaa Norgang Aug 1979

Images Of Women And Men In Contemporary Pop Song: Production And Perception, Gloriaa Norgang

Master's Theses

This study explored the images of women and men presented in the 1978 top 25 pop songs. An evaluation of these images was made by 23 women and 21 men. Each evaluator chose one of seven descriptors (objectifier, diminutizer, user, appreciating, used, diminutized, and objectified) to describe each female and male character in each pop song. Chi square analyses indicated that the sex of character effect on the descriptor frequencies was significant for women and men evaluators. Differences between women and men evaluators were not significant for female nor male characters. Analyses of data from both women and men evaluators …

The Importance Of An Educational Phase To The Stress Inoculation Of Anxiety, Susan Elizabeth Naggs

Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the importance of an educational component to the stress inoculation training (SIT) package, as well as the generalization of such training to non-targeted stressors. Twenty-eight students from introductory speech classes at the University of Richmond were matched in sets of four and placed into one of the following groups: Ed only, Skills only, Combo, and No treatment Control. Pre and post measures of anxiety were obtained through the administration of the STAI, SE, TAS, and AAT scales. The three treatment groups attended a speech anxiety workshop where various components of the SIT …

Salt Appetite During Acute Sodium Deficiency In The Gerbil, Elvira K. Perewiznyk Aug 1979

Salt Appetite During Acute Sodium Deficiency In The Gerbil, Elvira K. Perewiznyk

Master's Theses

In the present study, two experiments were conducted to examine the gerbil's response to acute sodium deficiency. Adult male gerbils were either exposed to a 1% b.w. subcutaneous injection of 1.5% formalin or a vehicle control injection. Within each injection level, half the animals were further assigned to either an isotonic saline or a water vehicle. Immediately following the injection, each S had access to isotonic saline and water as their drinking fluid. The formalin dissolved in water group displayed a significant increase in saline consumption, but at the same time decreased their water intake, in comparison to the water …

Field Dependence And Recall Of Related And Unrelated Lists Of Words, Lynda L. King May 1979

Field Dependence And Recall Of Related And Unrelated Lists Of Words, Lynda L. King

Master's Theses

This study dealt with the particular cognitive style known as field-independence and field-dependence as an influential factor upon the number of words recalled from categorized and uncategorized lists of words across three trials. After being tested for cognitive style using Witkin's Group Embedded Figures Test, 6 subjects from each of three identified styles, field-independent, medium, and field-dependent, were given a related (categorized) list of words while 6 different subjects from each of the cognitive styles were given an unrelated (uncategorized) list of words. Each word list was presented three times with recall after each trial for every subject being recorded. …

A Test Of Two Theories Of The Necker Cube Reversal Illusion, Phillip Powers Woodson Jr. May 1979

A Test Of Two Theories Of The Necker Cube Reversal Illusion, Phillip Powers Woodson Jr.

Master's Theses

The Necker cube reversal illusion was used to test the satiational and constructional theories of this illusion in an experimental paradigm. The paradigm involved one group of 51 university students who were tested under three experimental conditions. All three test sessions involved their watching a Necker cube for a continuous 2 minute period. Each session was separated by at least a 1-day interval. One session involved the plain cube. Another session involved a fixation mark in the center of the cube and a third session had the mark sequentially appearing in four different locations in the central region of the …

Honors Theses

Fifteen single fathers and their children and fifteen presently married fathers and their children were Ss in this study to investigate differences in male/female conceptualizations between the children of the two different family structures as well as the influence of the fathers' self-reported sex-role on the children. The BEM Sex-Role Inventory was administered to the fathers and the Kagen Symbolic Conceptualization Test was given to the children. Analysis results indicate no sex-role differences among both groups of fathers. Children's responses were significant when 1) scores of children of married fathers and children of single fathers were compared on the feminine …

Locus Of Control Modification As A Function Of Situational Control And Performance Feedback, Robert Bailey Allin Jr. Jan 1979

Locus Of Control Modification As A Function Of Situational Control And Performance Feedback, Robert Bailey Allin Jr.

Master's Theses

The present investigation explored the effects of personal control (skill instruction), no personal control (chance instruction), "success," and "failure" as independent variables in a task situation which might influence a change in subjects control orientations. 70 college subjects were randomly assigned to one of six experimental groups and a control group, and were tested for their locus of control orientations on the Rotter I-E scale both before and after participation in an original task situation and answering additional rating questions. Results indicate that significant interactive effects existed between locus of control orientation and successful task performance in task situations with …

The Effects Of Three Levels Of Social Interaction On The Maintenance Of Sidman Avoidance In Rats, John Lewis Cofer Jan 1979

The Effects Of Three Levels Of Social Interaction On The Maintenance Of Sidman Avoidance In Rats, John Lewis Cofer

Master's Theses

In 1965 Zajonc theorized that the effect of the presence of others was to facilitate the maintenance of a behavior. However, opposite results have been found when rat subjects were tested with shock used as a reinforcer. It was hypothesized that shock elicited aggression interfered with responding, producing performance decrement, rather than facilitation. A wheel-turn Sidman avoidance procedure was used to study maintenance behavior in rats under three levels of social interaction: single subject, two subjects separated by a barrier to prevent shock elicited aggressions (the companion paradigm), and two subjects not separated in the. test chamber (the physical paradigm). …

An Insight Into Management Development Programs, Bretta A. Tulbert

Honors Theses

Management development can be defined as any form of training for managers to improve present job performance while preparing them for advancement into higher positions. It involves any attempt by a manager to improve his position by the acquisition of new knowledge, skills, and attitudes in an orderly manner. Management development involves more than a series of presentations; it is a growing process which develops both general and specific interest. This is the responsibility of the company and the individual. The programs should include continuous feedback of results, development of individual career plans, and application of executive development techniques.

Child Neglect, Katherine Earle Jan 1979

Child Neglect, Katherine Earle

Honors Theses

The constant change, fast pace, urbanization, and mobilization of our society has propagated the creation of many new and marvelous inventions. However, the waste products of increased individual stress and discontent have, in turn, created an atmosphere conducive to such things as child abuse and child neglect. It may not be determined if abuse and neglect are more prevalent now than in the past, but fortunately they are being more frequently reported, the first step in correcting the situation. Recently the issue of child abuse has been widely discussed and has come to the attention of the community and the …

A Correlational Analysis Of Suggestibility, Self Preoccupation, Styles Of Loving, And Sensation Seeking, Teresa L. Johnston, Matt E. Jaremko Jan 1979

A Correlational Analysis Of Suggestibility, Self Preoccupation, Styles Of Loving, And Sensation Seeking, Teresa L. Johnston, Matt E. Jaremko

Honors Theses

A number of personality inventories and psychometric measures have been recently introduced to the psychological literature that attempt to measure concepts that have received little empirical scrutiny. Among these are scales to measure response suggestibility (Wilson & Barber, 1976), self-preoccupation (Noles & Jaremko, 1979) and styles of loving (Lasswell & Lasswell, 1976). This paper describes a study of the interrelationships of these measures with a well established personality measure, sensation seeking (Zuckerman, 1978) It is hoped that information on the correlations of these scales will suggest possible directions for future research and theory concerning these constructs.

The Measurement Of Self-Preoccupation, Steven W. Noles Jan 1979

The Measurement Of Self-Preoccupation, Steven W. Noles

Honors Theses

In recent years, there has been an increasing amount of interest in research on the extent and manner in which a person views him/herself in various settings. Some refer to this as self-preoccupation (Sarason, 1975, 1978; Wine, 1971), while others call it self-awareness, a state (Duval and Wicklund, 1972) or self-consciousness, a trait, (Buss and Scheier, 1976). It has been hypothesized that human consciousness is bidirectional; that is, it can be focused inward to the self or outward to the external environment (Bandura, 1977). There is some research and theory that suggests that the focus of this attention, influences the …

The Psychological And Rehabilitative Aspects Of Cerebrovascular Accidents, Jeanette Given Jan 1979

The Psychological And Rehabilitative Aspects Of Cerebrovascular Accidents, Jeanette Given

Honors Theses

Cerebrovascular accidents (CVA), commonly known as strokes, are the third main cause of death in America, with 200,000 deaths occurring each year ("Seven Hopeful Facts about Stroke," 1969). But not everyone dies as a result of a stroke. There are approximately 1 1/2 million people living in the United States who have had a stroke, and over 600,000 will be stroke victims this year ("Body Language"). Many of these people will be disabled and suffer various adverse side effects as a result of the stroke. CVA is the number one crippler in North America, with two million people becoming disabled …

Jealousy As A Function Of Self Preoccupation And Styles Of Loving, Teresa L. Johnston, Matt E. Jaremko Jan 1979

Jealousy As A Function Of Self Preoccupation And Styles Of Loving, Teresa L. Johnston, Matt E. Jaremko

Honors Theses

The present study was done to investigate jealousy as a function of styles of loving and self preoccupation. It was hypothesized that a high self preoccupied person would tend to be more jealous than a low self preoccupied person. This hypothesis could be supported by the accepted definition of a self preoccupied person. In other words, because the self preoccupied person is self-centered, he would probably be more jealous than the low self preoccupied person who is other-centered. Furthermore, it might also be hypothesized that persons who define love in manic or ludic terms would express more jealousy than would …
