A Reexamination Of The Effects Of Prismatic Displacement On Pointing Straight Ahead, Anastasia Houndoumadi Dec 1973

A Reexamination Of The Effects Of Prismatic Displacement On Pointing Straight Ahead, Anastasia Houndoumadi

Dissertations and Theses

A fully counterbalanced extension of the Bauer and Efstathiou (1965) study involved exposing 11 Ss to lateral prismatic displacement for five minutes and measuring their adaptation to it. The difference between pointings at a target taken before and after prismatic exposure constitutes an adaptive shift.

Personality Correlates Of Reticent And Nonreticent High School Students, Nancy Adele Mohrlock Dec 1973

Personality Correlates Of Reticent And Nonreticent High School Students, Nancy Adele Mohrlock

Student Work

The development of communication skills is vital to socialization in the classroom and to personality development. Petty and Starkey (1966) suggest that language is the greatest force for socialization that exists and at the same time is the most potent single factor in the development of individuality. Rosenberg and Coopersmith (1965, 1967) showed that a person's verbal behavior will influence others ’ attitudes toward him, while Mead (1934) indicated that an individual’s behavior is affected by the kind of image that he has of himself. This image comes largely from the individual's perceptions of o thers’ attitudes toward himself until …

The Relationships Of Sociometric Status And Personality Factors Among Sixth Grade Children, Mike Fischer Dec 1973

The Relationships Of Sociometric Status And Personality Factors Among Sixth Grade Children, Mike Fischer

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Historically, social interaction has played a central role in the development of personality constructs. How one sees himself, how others perceive him, and how these variables interact have played a core role in many theoretical systems.

If the theoretical assumptions underlying the relationships between personality development and social interaction are true, then significant relationships should exist between sociometric measures of personality. This was the rationale surrounding the development of this study.

Effect Of Presentation By Ear On Word Recognition Of Aphasic Patients In A Delayed Matching Task, David D. Peterson Nov 1973

Effect Of Presentation By Ear On Word Recognition Of Aphasic Patients In A Delayed Matching Task, David D. Peterson

Psychology ETDs

The purpose of the experiment was to investigate the effects of two primary conditions, presentation by ear and intratrial delay, on word recognition of subjects with receptive aphasia. The first condition consisted of words presented monaurally to the right and left ears, and binaurally. The second condition consisted of several values of delay inserted between the test word and visual choices. The effects of these variables were determined under noun and verb stimulus conditions. Results indicated that subjects with posterior brain-damage showed a monaural ear asymmetry with the right ear resulting in less accurate word recognition. Both ears combined gave …

Differences Between Supervisor And High And Low-Rated Employees' Perceptions Of Job Performance Ratings And Importance Of Job Factors, Harvey Edward Mcgowan Nov 1973

Differences Between Supervisor And High And Low-Rated Employees' Perceptions Of Job Performance Ratings And Importance Of Job Factors, Harvey Edward Mcgowan

Dissertations and Theses

This study was an attempt to gain insight into differing conceptions of job performance and job performance factors held by supervisors, employees in general, and of employees rated high and low on overall job performance by their supervisors. The discrepancy in the perceptions of job performance is an element in a general pattern of a well-documented discrepancy in the perception of subordinates' wants, needs and desires by superiors.

To assess employees' perceptions about their own job performance, self-ratings were taken, along with estimate ratings of how employees thought their supervisors would rate them. A graphic rating scale was used, Format …

Trait Anxiety, Sensation Seeking, Internal-External Locus Of Control In Male And Female Delinquents And Non-Delinquents, Steve Sherrets Nov 1973

Trait Anxiety, Sensation Seeking, Internal-External Locus Of Control In Male And Female Delinquents And Non-Delinquents, Steve Sherrets

Student Work

Personality research with delinquents has largely produced inconclusive and inconsistent results. Peterson, Quay and Cameron (1959) have pointed out that:

Most investigations of personality factors in crime and delinquency have begun with a legally defined sample of offenders, proceeded with comparisons between that group and a more or less carefully matched group of non-offenders, and ended with less ambiguous results.

The Verbal Learning Effect In Recognition And Recall Memory For Verbal Stimuli, E. Chandler Shumate Sep 1973

The Verbal Learning Effect In Recognition And Recall Memory For Verbal Stimuli, E. Chandler Shumate

Psychology ETDs

Three experiments were conducted to test the effects of associative training with representative and nonrepresentative responses upon stimulus recognition and, more importantly, stimulus recall. In Exp. I, is were required to learn, in six study-test trials, one of two P A lists composed of twelve stimulus items (trigram doublets) either high or low in meaningfulness (M). Half the stimuli in each list were paired with representative responses, the other half were paired with nonrepresentative responses. The results, obtained from a two-item, forced-choice recognition test, showed that performance was positively related to stimulus M, and the facilitating effect of associative training …

The Relationship Between Mean Magnitude Of Reward And Partial, Varied, And Continuous Schedules Of Reinforcement, James E. Schroeder Aug 1973

The Relationship Between Mean Magnitude Of Reward And Partial, Varied, And Continuous Schedules Of Reinforcement, James E. Schroeder

Psychology ETDs

A model was described that combines Grice's variable threshold model for reaction time and Logan's incentive theory for response speed in instrumental conditioning in an attempt to account for the relative performance of rats receiving continuous (CRF), varied (VRF), or partial (PRF) reinforcement. The essence of the model is that incentive motivation depends on the mean amount of reward previously received, as well as upon the S's distance from the goal, that incentive motivation can be interpreted as affecting the mean threshold for responding, and that the greater the variability in reward the greater the variability in the threshold.

Dimensional Preference Effects In Recall Memory, C. Jean Rogers Aug 1973

Dimensional Preference Effects In Recall Memory, C. Jean Rogers

Psychology ETDs

Dimensional preference in six-year-olds was investigated by the use of a series of recall memory tasks in which the amount of information available in the stimuli and the nature of the feedback provided were systematically varied. The results suggested that low preference does not necessarily imply that the dimension will fail to be processed nor does it appear that the presence of a more preferred dimension prevents processing of a less preferred dimension. Rather, the results indicated that processing and recall of the various dimensions of a stimulus were a function of dimension preference, amount of information available in the …

Cognitive Differentiation And Trait Anxiety As A Function Of Conceptual Level, George T. Brennan Aug 1973

Cognitive Differentiation And Trait Anxiety As A Function Of Conceptual Level, George T. Brennan

Student Work

In recent years, there has been an increasing interest among personality investigators in a cognitive orientation to personality. Several theorists and researchers have begun to relate the study of cognition and "cognitive structures" to personality dynamics (Suedfield, 1971) and to personality development (Bieri, 1966). Suedfield

The Effects Of Participation In Goal Setting And Methods Selection, James G. Jones Aug 1973

The Effects Of Participation In Goal Setting And Methods Selection, James G. Jones

Student Work

Eighty undergraduate students who were enrolled in introductory psychology classes were used to determine the effects which participation in decision-making on a goal directed task has on performance and attitudes. The Ss were randomly assigned to one of four treatment groups, defined by type of participation in decision-making. The Ss were either permitted to select or were assigned performance goals and were either permitted to select or were assigned a sequence in which to perform an arithmetic task.

The results of the study suggest that type of participation in decision-making can under certain circumstances have significant effects on performance attitudes …

The Referential Communication Of Facial Characteristics By Deaf And Normal-Hearing Adolescents, Irving King Jordan Jr. Aug 1973

The Referential Communication Of Facial Characteristics By Deaf And Normal-Hearing Adolescents, Irving King Jordan Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

In order to assess the characteristics of the manual communications of linguistically adult deaf individuals, six pairs of deaf adolescents and 24 pairs of normal hearing adolescents described photographic referents in a referential communication setting. The referents were photographs of people's faces, selected in a preliminary recognizability study to insure a range of difficulty from easily recognizable to almost chance recognition.

Although the design was essentially exploratory and descriptive, there are several noteworthy results: (1) There was no difference between the two subject groups in the accuracy with which they communicated. Both groups scored extremely high. (2) The deaf group …

The Effect Of Fading To Train B-D And P-Q Discrimination In Children With Specific Learning Disabilities, Janet L. Culbertson Aug 1973

The Effect Of Fading To Train B-D And P-Q Discrimination In Children With Specific Learning Disabilities, Janet L. Culbertson

Master's Theses

The present study was designed to assess the effective ness of a stimulus programming technique, fading, in teaching visual discrimination and name association to the letters b-d and p-q. The Ss were first and second grade children with diagnosed learning disabilities, who displayed a high frequency of reversal errors, particularly to the letters b-d and p-q. The study also provided a means of assessing the benefit of the fading technique in £s ability to read words and phrases, and discriminate b-d and p-q when they appear in the context of a nonsense syllable. The results indicated that the fading technique …

Measuring Attitudes Toward Work Of Males And Females From A Student Population And From A Bank Population, Edward Henry Foley Aug 1973

Measuring Attitudes Toward Work Of Males And Females From A Student Population And From A Bank Population, Edward Henry Foley

Master's Theses

An experiment was designed in order to measure the attitude toward work of 50 males and 50 females in a student sample and of 39 male managers and 39 female managers in a bank sample. The attitude scale, presented to the Ss, was designed by the author and contained 50 statements. Each of 44 statements pertained either to a Motivation factor, e.g. achievement, responsibility, etc. or to a Hygiene factor, e.g. salary, status, etc. with the remaining six used as Fillers. All statistical tests were performed at the .01 level of significance. An analysis of variance revealed a significant three …
