The Role Of Interrole Transitioning In The Conflict And Enrichment Of Work And Family, John Paul Agosta

This study focuses on how full-time, sandwiched workers (i.e., those who are dual-caregivers, providing care to both their children and elders) experience interrole transitioning from both the work and family roles, and tests whether affective reactions to transitioning relate to work and family outcomes. This study has three specific objectives: 1) assess the extent to which bi-directional interrole transitioning (i.e., the switching between two different roles while located in one role) predicts bi-directional work-family conflict; 2) examine if interrole transitioning relates to bi-directional work-family enrichment in this population, and 3) test whether or not employees’ affective reactions to interrole transitioning …

Increasing age heterogeneity within organizations is pressing researchers to better understand the effects of a multigenerational workforce, teams, and dyads. In response to this, the present research aimed to investigate the effect of employee and supervisor age (in)congruence in relation to job and life satisfaction, as well as retirement intentions, all mediated by leader-member exchange (LMX), using a time-lagged design. Two different theoretical foundations were investigated. Based on the relational demography literature, better outcomes were expected to be associated with age similarity. The goal of this study is to test a new model of work life (nonwork) balance (WLB) that may explain individual and cross-generational differences in views of WLB. A prominent feature within this model, identity salience, is described as the values and importance a person attaches to the multiple roles they manage. This study addresses one of the major causes for inconsistency in the existing WLB research by examining how and why perceptions of WLB differ depending on the life stage of sample participants. The primary purpose of this study was to examine superior-subordinate dyads which violate relational norms and produce status inconsistency. Specifically, within the context of supervisor age and education, occupational norms suggest that employees expect their supervisor to be older and have a higher level of education. In the face of growing demographic diversity, more emphasis is being placed on superiors to build skills to effectively interact with a heterogeneous set of employees.
