The Role Of Attentional Control And Social Influence In Risky Decision Making, Samantha Salernitano May 2023

The Role Of Attentional Control And Social Influence In Risky Decision Making, Samantha Salernitano

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

People often are required to make decisions in a collaborative environment, including decisions that deal with risky or uncertain outcomes. The present thesis investigated the role of both social influence and individual cognitive factors (attentional control) in risky decision making. Two measures of attentional control (a Stroop task and a Go/No-go task) were completed by participants. Risky choice was then measured through a hypothetical monetary gambling task where participants made choices between a smaller-guaranteed reward or a larger-risky reward. Three blocks of the risky-choice task were completed. Participants in the individual condition completed all three blocks of trials individually. For …

Perceptions Of Juvenile Confessions As A Function Of Police Report And Questioning Quality, Morgan Andrews May 2019

Perceptions Of Juvenile Confessions As A Function Of Police Report And Questioning Quality, Morgan Andrews

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Recent research has shown that mock jurors are sensitive to interrogation coerciveness and its relation to risk of false confessions in adults if they can see interrogation tactics used, but not if provided with a police report that omits these tactics (Kassin et al., 2017). The present study was designed to extend these findings to a juvenile confession case. The current study analyzed the effects of interrogation quality and type of evidence presented on mock jurors' perceptions of a juvenile confession. Participants (N= 602) read a case in which coerciveness (highly vs slightly), police report type (accurate vs inaccurate vs …

Group Decision Making In The Jury Context: A Combined Theoretical Approach, Larissa Angelique Schmersal Jan 2011

Group Decision Making In The Jury Context: A Combined Theoretical Approach, Larissa Angelique Schmersal

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Much of the extant research on jury decision making has been conducted at the juror level, examining the individual decisions of mock jurors. Although studying mock juror decisions provides initial insight into jury decision making, studying the deliberation process should be a priority for future research. Few theoretical models have been developed to examine the decision process of the jury. The social combination and the social communication approaches provide some insight into this process; however, analysis of these methods is scarce due, in part, to their limited applicability.

The current study examined the jury deliberation using a combined theoretical approach. …

Escalation Bias In Group Decision-Making, Molly Joann Russ Jan 2004

Escalation Bias In Group Decision-Making, Molly Joann Russ

LSU Master's Theses

The present study extended the literature on escalation bias to group decision-making in the context of performance appraisal. Escalation theory states that persons responsible for a hiring decision will provide higher evaluation ratings of that employee than those persons not responsible for the decision. This study compared the performance evaluation decisions of supervisors, individual team members, and teams in order to ascertain differences in escalation behaviors based on rater perspective and whether the rater was responsible for hiring the employee or not. Support for the hypotheses varied depending on the employment decision being made and the perspective of the decision-maker. …

Face-To-Face Versus Computer-Mediated Communication: An Investigation Of Multiple Outcomes Across Task-Types, Anton James Villado Jan 2001

Face-To-Face Versus Computer-Mediated Communication: An Investigation Of Multiple Outcomes Across Task-Types, Anton James Villado

Theses Digitization Project

A novel approach was used to investigate differences between groups using computer-mediated and face-to-face communication. In a laboratory setting, three-person groups completed three survival themed tasks. The tasks were related in that the output of a preliminary task became the input of the sequent task.

The Effects Of Collective Interdependence Efficacy On The Difficulty Of Self-Chosen Group Goals, Shannon Christy Sowers

Theses Digitization Project

This study examined the effects of collective interdependence efficacy on the difficulty of self-chosen group goals and performance levels. Teamwork interdependence KSAs were manipulated by false feedback in an experimental setting.
