Stressin' Me Out: A Comparison Of Stress Levels In College Student-Athletes And Non-Student-Athletes, Tag Pacot, Samantha Watson, Emorie Knox, Laney Mears

Scholars Day Conference

We investigated whether stress levels differed between college student-athletes and regular students. Participants filled out background information, such as age, ethnicity, classification, and student-athlete status. They then filled out a questionnaire to obtain a raw stress score intended to evaluate stress levels. Student-athletes and regular students showed little difference in stress levels. These results indicate that, although student-athletes and regular students share different demands in their everyday lives, both are impacted equally by stress. These results may impact the treatment and attention to the prevalence of stress for all collegiate students.

Effects Fidget Toys Have On Focus, Grace E. Renois, Reyna Rogers, Morgan Cobb Apr 2024

Effects Fidget Toys Have On Focus, Grace E. Renois, Reyna Rogers, Morgan Cobb

Scholars Day Conference

In the current study, we investigated how college students’ levels of focus were affected by fidget toys. Participants’ took two 10-question math assessments and watched a 5-minute video in between them. 46 people received a fidget toy to play with during the second math assessment, and 46 people did not receive a fidget toy. Observers rated participants on off-task behaviors through a coded system called the RRC System on a scale of 1 to 5. College students’ were shown to have an increased on-task behavior and the grades of the math assessment with the fidget toy rather than without it.

Learning Styles And Gender: How They Influence Academic Performance, Keilee Holcomb, Katie Cofer, Emily Adams, Graceann Covington

Scholars Day Conference

The current study examined whether biological sex and learning style had an influence on a student’s academic performance. The participants were asked to take a nineteen-question survey. This survey included sixteen questions from the VARK questionnaire. Three additional questions were added asked for the participant’s age, biological sex, and grade-point average (GPA). The answers were recorded anonymously. These answers were then entered into the VARK questionnaire to determine the participant’s learning style. The results revealed no main effects or interactions. These results are important to studies of academic performance and what aspects can influence it.

The History Of Dog Training And Its Importance To Modern Day Training Techniques, Marlaina Moix Apr 2024

The History Of Dog Training And Its Importance To Modern Day Training Techniques, Marlaina Moix

Scholars Day Conference

The world of dog training is a vast community that consists of many different methodologies, trainers, and philosophies, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. It is vital for any dog trainer, whether simply training their pet dog to come and sit or training a high-performance military working dog, to have a thorough understanding of today’s training philosophies and the philosophies that came before. Dog training is a living, breathing science that must be viewed as the sum of experiences and movements.

How Others Perceive Personality Traits Through The Clothing You Wear, Conner Jacobs, Cody Pallen, Savannah Spradlin Apr 2023

How Others Perceive Personality Traits Through The Clothing You Wear, Conner Jacobs, Cody Pallen, Savannah Spradlin

Scholars Day Conference

We looked into how clothing style affected perceived personality traits. 52 female undergraduate students were asked to answer questions in reference to a model presented with different outfits. These questions rated the degree to which the participant thought that the model displayed certain personality traits. Going against predictions, perceived extroversion and emotional stability weren’t affected by clothing styles, perceived agreeableness and conscientiousness were higher in everyday wear than athletic wear, and perceived openness to experience was higher in formal wear than in athletic wear. For society, this study shows that what one wears can affect how others view them.

Biases In Personality Test Results, Emily Shipman, Madison Atchley, Hannah More Apr 2023

Biases In Personality Test Results, Emily Shipman, Madison Atchley, Hannah More

Scholars Day Conference

We studied the differences in perceived accuracy of general and specific personality test results in 89 participants. We hypothesized that participants receiving general feedback would rate their reliability higher than those receiving specific feedback. Each participant took a personality test, received either general or specific results, and then rated the accuracy of those results on a numbered scale. The participants who received general feedback, on average, thought the personality test “got them” the most. These results are important, because they show how people are willing to believe results that are vague because they tend to be more positive.

Counseling For Psychosocial Stress Factors Associated With Hearning Loss, Emily Mcmaster

Scholars Day Conference

Audiologists play a major role in helping people with hearing loss learn how to better communicate and how to connect to the world around them. The purpose of this project investigates the extent to which audiologists counsel their clients for the psychosocial stress factors caused by hearing loss, along with determining the extent in which patients with hearing loss feel they would benefit from counseling services implemented into their appointments. In addition to psychosocial stress factors, the thesis will analyze the extent to which clients are educated on their hearing loss and given practical ways to adjust to their loss …

A Meta-Analysis On The Differences In Neuroplasticity Between Women And Men After Traumatic Brain Injuries, Victoria Martin Apr 2022

A Meta-Analysis On The Differences In Neuroplasticity Between Women And Men After Traumatic Brain Injuries, Victoria Martin

Scholars Day Conference

The current meta-analysis investigates the differences in neuroplasticity between women and men after a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Research on the differences in neuroplasticity between women and men is relatively new and few studies have reported outcome variables by gender after TBIs. Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to adapt and change particularly because of learning or brain injuries. TBI is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide; because of this, learning more about these differences can give scientists and clinicians more information on how to better treat people with brain injuries. Current research is inconsistent on whether there is …

The Effect Of Sadism And Racism Levels On A Person's Willingness To Harm An Innocent Victem, Lauren Mccann, Natalie Helms, Mea Heard

Scholars Day Conference

We investigated whether racial bias and sadism levels affected participants' willingness to harm an innocent person. Participants completed a personality assessment mixed with ten sadism questions to reduce suspiciousness of what we were really measuring and competed with a fictional opponent, unbeknownst to the participant and randomly assigned to be black or white in a series of reaction time tests, followed by a punishment time, placing a hand in ice water for a number of seconds, decided by the winner of that round. There were four rounds in which the fictional opponent won the first round and assigned a punishment …

Two Peas In A Pod? An Investigation Of Friendship And Personality, Josephine N. Collins

Scholars Day Conference

This study investigated whether we can tell people are friends by looking at them. Participants viewed sets of four photos, two of which are friends, and rated personality, appearance, and friendship likelihood. I expected real friends to have higher friendship likelihood ratings and personality similarity. The results indicated self-other agreement among ratings of personality by real friends, but there were not significant patterns among the other variables.

Effects Of Sound Symbolism In Names On Personality Perception, Josephine N. Collins, Victoria A. Martin, Makayla H. Allen May 2020

Effects Of Sound Symbolism In Names On Personality Perception, Josephine N. Collins, Victoria A. Martin, Makayla H. Allen

Scholars Day Conference

We investigated effects of sound symbolism in names on personality perception. Participants were randomly assigned to a group that either had invented or non-invented round or sharp names. They were asked to fill out a BFI-10 and a BSRI-12 questionnaire for five different names followed by reading 10 descriptions of personality traits and circling either a round name or a sharp name that fit the description best. Results showed that sound type present in names affected perceptions of Extraversion and that name and sound type affected perceptions of Femininity. These results provide evidence of sound symbolic associations present in names.
