Researchers have shown that children with anxiety disorders perform worse on intelligence tests than children with no diagnosable disorders. At this point, two theories have been put forth to describe the direction of this relationship: anxiety results in lowered test performance, and underlying cognitive deficits result in the development of anxiety. Lowered test performance as a result of anxiety may either be due to attention-deficits due to state anxiety or anxiety-elicited difficulties with long-term retention and learning. Simulated Subnormal Performance On The Stanford Binet-V: An Exploratory Investigation Of The Stanford Binet Rarely Missed Items Index, Mandi Wilkes Musso

The purpose of this study was to derive an embedded validity index of effort for the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales-Fifth Edition (SB5; Roid, 2003a) and to validate this index using an analog sample of individuals feigning mild mental retardation (MR). Of the data provided by Dr. Roid, 307 healthy individuals aged 18-35 with full scale intelligence quotients (FSIQ) greater than 70 were included in this study (n = 307) as well as 31 individuals with FSIQ scores in the MR range. Intellectual Ability In Children With Anxiety: A Replication And Exploration Of The Differences, Melissa S. Munson

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of anxiety on the intellectual functioning of children. Specifically, the current researchers sought to replicate previous findings that children with higher levels of anxiety have significantly lower scores on tests of intelligence. A second goal was to examine possible reasons for these deficits, including possible deficits in working memory and/or attention. Participants were divided into two groups with high and low anxiety, based on a self-report measure, though none of the children reported clinically problematic anxiety. Previous research has shown family conflict to have a detrimental effect on the academic functioning of children and adolescents. Most research conceptualizes family conflict as marital distress or divorce. Additional factors that have been shown to effect academic functioning include cognitive ability (i.e., intelligence), academic skills (e.g., homework behaviors), and amount of resources (i.e., socioeconomic status, SES). The present study investigated whether parent-adolescent conflict is related to adolescent academic achievement after accounting for cognitive ability and homework behaviors.
