Psychological And Demographic Differences Of Bdsm Practitioners, Sabrina Jefferson Dec 2018

Psychological And Demographic Differences Of Bdsm Practitioners, Sabrina Jefferson

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The purpose of this study was to gain more information about demographic and psychological differences between the bondage/discipline, dominance/submission, sadism/masochism (BDSM) population and the general population. BDSM has become more prominent in the knowledge of the general population with the notoriety of E.L. James’ book series 50 Shades of Grey, but even with the new prominence of BDSM in American households, there is a lack of knowledge about BDSM practitioners among psychotherapists. In this study, data was gathered from a sample of BDSM practitioners and a general population sample on a variety of demographic and psychological variables. Independent samples …

How Do Mindfulness Practitioners Describe Pausing?: A Qualitative Interview Study, Benjamin G. Feldman May 2018

How Do Mindfulness Practitioners Describe Pausing?: A Qualitative Interview Study, Benjamin G. Feldman

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) has been demonstrated to be an effective adjunct to psychotherapy for reducing distress. An exploration of the MBSR literature was undertaken to examine the concept of pausing. Surprisingly, this process highlighted by MBSR’S creator Jon Kabat-Zinn, was found to be under-researched; when mentioned, it is often not defined. In order to examine the phenomenon empirically, this study used transcripts of interviews (N = 20) conducted for a larger study examining how mindfulness practice is learned. A Grounded Theory content analysis examined open-ended interviews to explore how MBSR participants represent taking a pause. The transcripts had …

Comparing Ratios Of Depression Between Female To Male Mci Patients And The General Population, Abbie Levinson May 2018

Comparing Ratios Of Depression Between Female To Male Mci Patients And The General Population, Abbie Levinson

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is a condition that affects 20% of adults aged 60 and older. Patients with MCI find themselves in a place between healthy cognitive function and dementia. MCI is characterized by the forgetting of events and conversations, difficulty completing complex tasks, and trouble with remembering familiar environments. Previous studies on MCI suggest that patients are at a 40% greater risk of developing dementia, particularly Alzheimer’s disease, as their condition progresses (Petersen, 1999). Accompanying that, MCI patients are often diagnosed with a mood disorder, commonly depression (Orgeta, Qazi, Spector, & Orrell, 2015). Prior studies have presented that in …

On Hold: Relationships In The Age Of Mobile Phone Distraction, Isabel M. Bourget May 2018

On Hold: Relationships In The Age Of Mobile Phone Distraction, Isabel M. Bourget

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Interpersonal communication has been transformed by the more than 70 percent of adults who own smartphones (Greenwood, Perrin & Duggan, 2016) and other forms of portable technology. It is now more convenient than ever to stay in touch, find lost friends, and access constantly updated information online, but research has linked mobile phone use to decreased relationship and interaction quality. For example, McDaniel and Coyne (2016) found that self-reported technology use among married couples predicted more partner conflict and less relationship satisfaction, particularly for women. Brown, Manago and Trimble (2016) found similar results in that the more friend dyads were …

The Role Of Instructional Gesture In Learning Science Concepts In Undergraduate Students, Andrea J. Fogarty May 2018

The Role Of Instructional Gesture In Learning Science Concepts In Undergraduate Students, Andrea J. Fogarty

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Recent research has shown that hand gestures produced by both teachers and learners make underlying mechanisms and abstract symbols more concrete for learning (Goldin-Meadow, Levine, Zinchenko, Yip, Hemani, & Factor, 2012; Vallotton, Fusaro, Hayden, Decker, & Gutowski, 2015). The current study examined the effects of instructional gesture on undergraduates’ learning of plate tectonics by manipulating gesture in several instructional conditions. There were three videotaped conditions in the study: representational gesture, beat gesture, and no gesture. It was hypothesized that instructional gesture condition would enhance the understanding of plate tectonics in undergraduate students. Results showed that while all conditions …

Facebook: Friend Or Foe? Exploring The Relationship Between Social Media Use, Social Comparison, Self-Esteem And Affect, Elizabeth F. Gallinari May 2018

Facebook: Friend Or Foe? Exploring The Relationship Between Social Media Use, Social Comparison, Self-Esteem And Affect, Elizabeth F. Gallinari

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Festinger’s social comparison theory suggests humans have a drive to gain accurate self-evaluations through comparison to others. As social media continues to expand, different platforms for social comparison are continuously being created allowing for individuals to compare themselves to millions of people worldwide. Social media provides the perfect platform for meticulous self-presentation. Frequent social media users may believe that others are happier and more successful than themselves, which could lead to lower self-esteem. Research also suggests that participants high in social comparison orientation seek out social comparisons on social media. Thus, an individual’s tendency to compare oneself to others may …

More Than Meets The Eye: Challenges Men Face With Personal, Private, And Public Silence When Seeking Help Academically, Danielle Dupuis Apr 2018

More Than Meets The Eye: Challenges Men Face With Personal, Private, And Public Silence When Seeking Help Academically, Danielle Dupuis

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Compared to the female population, it is apparent that American men are struggling academically, resulting in higher drop-out rates for men at the university level and higher rates of retention for women nationwide (Higher Education Policy Institute, 2009). Additionally, men are far less likely than women to seek help for social and emotional issues they are struggling with in order to adhere to masculine ideals (Addis, Reigeluth, & Schwab, 2016). It is hypothesized that this silencing of men’s struggles is related to the lack of willingness to reach out for help academically. The present, qualitative study included interviews with seven …
