Broken Promises: Prolonged Diminished Quality-Of-Life Among Liberian Ebola Survivors Half A Decade After The 2014-16 West African Outbreak, Jessi Hanson-Defusco, Decontee Davis, Meghana Bommareddy, Zainab Olaniyan
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
The 2014–2016 Ebola outbreak left thousands of Liberian survivors with severely diminished quality of life. Applying a social determinants framework, this mixed method study investigates to what extent Ebola virus disease (EVD) survivors suffer long-haul psychosocial stress, diminished quality-of-life factors, and the impact of EVD-related service provisions on their ongoing healing. We present the results of a quantitative analysis survey of data collected from 19 Liberian EVD survivors in 2022 using snowball sampling. Additionally, a qualitative analysis of survivor statements helps triangulate key statistical findings and inform causal mechanisms. Survivors report experiencing 5.25 of a total of 7 ongoing stressors …

Self-Esteem Among Adults With Adhd Symptoms, Dana Richelieu
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This study assessed if attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) treatment, ADHD symptoms, social support, gender, coping, and educational attainment predicted self-esteem among adults. It differed from previous research on this topic because it included participants with ADHD symptoms compared to those with formal ADHD diagnoses. Grounded in Leary and Baumeister’s sociometer theory, the study involved using a nonexperimental correlational survey research design to assess this issue. A sample of 272 adult participants living in the United States were recruited. A multiple regression analysis revealed ADHD symptoms, social support, and coping were statistically significant predictors of self-esteem, while ADHD treatment, gender, …

The Experience Of Grief, Coping, And Community In Black Families And Friends Of Homicide Victims, Rachel A. Jenkins
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Black families and friends of homicide victims (BFFHV) are left behind to grieve and cope with the traumatic loss of a loved one to homicide. The evidence reveals a risk of developing emotional and psychological issues for the survivors. The purpose of this study was to explore four phenomena the BFFHV experience: (a) the experience with local law enforcement and the courts during the investigation of the homicide, (b) the experience of grieving over traumatic loss, (c) the experience of coping with traumatic loss, and (d) their current relationship with the community. Heider’s attribution theory was used to guide the …

Rehabilitation Counselor Interventions On Parental-Disability Acceptance, James Samuel Rothrock
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Rehabilitation counselors work with families to assist in transitioning adolescents with intellectual disabilities (ID) from school to adult services. Currently, there is no evidence base for rehabilitation counselors to conceptualize and promote disability acceptance in parents. The purpose of this research was to identify interventions used by rehabilitation counselors with parents at various levels of disability acceptance. The research questions focused on what experiences rehabilitation counselors have had coordinating services with parents of adolescents with ID experiencing various degrees of acceptance and how do they understand and intervene with parental acceptance? The theoretical foundations girding the formation and interpretation of …

Police Officer Perceptions Of Parenting Experience Changes Following An On-Duty Child Death, Jennifer Sellers
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Law enforcement officers (LEOs) work in careers that can be demanding, stressful, and traumatizing. Although researchers have explored vicarious, or secondary, trauma as it relates to a LEO bringing their experiences at work into the home environment, influencing their spouse or partner’s mental and physical well-being, they have not yet investigated how a LEO’s experience of a child death while on-duty might affect their parenting styles. The purpose of this qualitative study was to better understand the parenting styles that LEOs use or change when they have experienced a traumatic incident at work, specifically a child death. The study was …
Clinicians’ Experiences Of Using Schema-Focused Therapy In Black Americans With Panic Disorder, Martin E. Akanaefu
Clinicians’ Experiences Of Using Schema-Focused Therapy In Black Americans With Panic Disorder, Martin E. Akanaefu
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Black Americans have a history of racism, oppression, subjugation, and discrimination, which could increase the risk of developing panic disorder. Because panic disorder and other chronic psychological problems resist Beck’s short cognitive therapy and other interventions that overlook the roots of psychological problems, schema-focused therapy has been adopted more conveniently over the most recent years for their effective treatment. In this study, clinicians’ experiences of using schema-focused therapy with Black Americans with panic disorder was explored. The concept that grounded this study was the integrated schema-focused model, a convenient clinical model that integrates several models of schema therapy. Generic qualitative …

Black Social Workers Use Of Racial Identity And Self Concept In The Workplace, Shielah Monique Deblanc
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Navigating the Black professional identity in U.S. work environments poses challenges for social workers, with limited research addressing racial salience, power dynamics, and self-concept within their specific workplace contexts. Using self-concept theory, and the multidimensional model of racial identity as theoretical and conceptual frameworks, the purpose of this research was to examine Black social workers’ attitudes about self-concept using racial salience, power distance, and employee tenure as predictors. Using web-based surveys to collect data, a purposive sample of 77 participants were used to complete demographic information, a measure of centrality to gauge racial salience Multidimensional Inventory of Black Identity, a …

Ptsd As A Mediator Of The Relationship Between Police Discrimination And Family Relationship Among Black Americans, Mary A. Camper
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Police discrimination among Black Americans has been an ongoing trend for many years. Researchers have linked police discrimination to a traumatic experience that may result in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms. In addition, researchers found that PTSD symptoms may impact the family relationship negatively. This quantitative study examined whether PTSD symptoms mediated the relationship between experiences of police discrimination and family relationships. The family system theory and the critical race theory guided this study. The family system theory described how one family member affects the whole family unit. The critical race theory described the systems that are in place …

Strong Black Woman Schema And Its Impact Among Black Women, Charissa Simon
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This qualitative phenomenological study explored the impact of the Strong Black Woman (SBW) schema on the mental health and help-seeking behaviors of Black/African American professional women, contributing novel insights to existing literature. Despite possessing access and financial means for mental health services, a strikingly low rate of Black/African American professional women seek such resources. The study was grounded in intersectionality theory and the self-silencing theory. Eleven Black/African American professional women participants volunteered. Thematic analysis illuminated common barriers including pride, distrust in the mental health system, a strong inclination towards self-reliance, feelings of being misunderstood, and a lack of emotional support. …
The Relationship Between Domestic Violence And Substance Abuse Treatment Outcomes, Bernardina Marcelo
The Relationship Between Domestic Violence And Substance Abuse Treatment Outcomes, Bernardina Marcelo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Little is known about how domestic violence treatment outcomes relate to substance abuse among intimate partners. Previous studies have reported that intimate partners who are in treatment for substance use struggle with the containment of domestic violence. Therefore, the purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to investigate how substance abuse among intimate partners relates to domestic violence treatment outcomes. Two theoretical frameworks, namely cycle of violence theory and social exchange theory informed the study. A convenience sample of 76 participants participated in the study. Data were analyzed using binary logistic regression, and the results showed that women in domestic …

The Lived Experience Of Transformation In Cam Providers Trained In Trauma-Informed Care, Alane Lucht
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Public and professional awareness of the nature and consequences of psychological trauma has resulted in a greater interest in becoming trauma informed. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) providers have begun to incorporate trauma-informed care in their practices. However, there is a lack of research exploring how training in trauma-informed care (TIC) personally and professionally transforms CAM providers. This descriptive phenomenological study explored the lived experience of transformation in CAM providers who participated in TIC training. Transformative learning theory (TLT) was used as the conceptual framework. Nine participants were interviewed, and their experiences of personal and professional transformation were analyzed using …

Self-Forgiveness As A Moderator Between Moral Injury And Posttraumatic Growth Among Veterans, Mario S. De Souza Ferreira
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The process of reintegration after military combat service is a difficult path for many veterans. Countless studies have been conducted examining the effects of trauma secondary to military service that result in posttraumatic stress disorder and other related consequences. However, moral injury (MI) related to the shame and guilt experienced by veterans has been of particular interest among mental health providers. Researchers have investigated the effects of forgiveness as a moderator between MI and posttraumatic growth (PTG). Gaps remain in the current mental health literature regarding the effect of self-forgiveness as a moderator between MI and PTG among combat veterans. …

The Relative Strength Of Managerial Abuse, Emotion Regulation, And Displaced Aggression On Life Satisfaction, Mikhail Lyublinsky
The Relative Strength Of Managerial Abuse, Emotion Regulation, And Displaced Aggression On Life Satisfaction, Mikhail Lyublinsky
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The potential for negative experiences in the workplace, such as managerial abuse (i.e., the inappropriate and harmful behavior of managers towards subordinates, including verbal aggression and unfair treatment), presents significant obstacles to employee satisfaction and overall well-being. Although ample evidence has supported the detrimental impact of managerial abuse on employees' life satisfaction, the influence of other factors such as the ability to regulate one’s emotional reactions and/or vent one’s anger by displacing it on someone without the power to retaliate may further impact one’s satisfaction with life. Informed by the theory of displaced aggression, the purpose of this quantitative, nonexperimental, …

The Effects Of Early Language Deprivation On Deaf Adults’ Interpersonal Relationships, Brianna Martz
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Within the United States, 90 to 95% of Deaf individuals are born to hearing parents who have little to no experience with deafness, Deaf culture or the Deaf community. Due to a multitude of factors, these individuals typically grow up with limited access to a complete language until they reach kindergarten or later. Additionally, American Sign Language (ASL)-based resources are rare or non-existent in most areas of mainstream living. Using a phenomenological method of inquiry, the study illuminated the lived experiences of early language deprivation for Deaf American adults in relation to their ability to cope with deaf-specific trauma during …

African American Family Structure Of Caring For A Member With Alzheimer's Disease And Dementia, Sherry Lane Perry
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia (ADRD) affect African Americans (AA) more than other ethnic or racial groups. It is common for AA diagnosed with ADRD to be cared for in the home. Historically, family members that provide care consist of significant others, relatives, and extended family. The United States Census Bureau showed an increase in Americans aged sixty and older from 55.7 million to 74.6 million. Due to the increase in the AA elderly population, the need for family caregivers will increase for this minority group. This study explored how AA family caregivers described their experiences and unique family structure …
Spontaneous Self-Affirmation And Social Context As Moderators Between Stereotype Threat And Online Academic Performance, Katrina Hilton
Spontaneous Self-Affirmation And Social Context As Moderators Between Stereotype Threat And Online Academic Performance, Katrina Hilton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Despite years of progress, there remains an academic achievement gap among minority and non-minority students in all levels of education. A possible reason for the persistent achievement gap is stereotype threat, which is a situational predicament that prompts individuals to perform in ways that mirror the stereotypes associated with their social groups. Self-affirmation interventions are often used to disrupt the effects of stereotype threat, as students are taught how to focus on their strengths and values to help improve their self-concepts. However, spontaneous self-affirmation techniques may be more impactful because students are able to automatically self-affirm in any psychologically threatening …
