Effects Of Caregiver Burden And Satisfaction On Affect Of Older End-Stage Renal Disease Patients And Their Spouses, Maureen Wilson-Genderson, Rachel A Pruchno, Francine P Cartwright Dec 2009

Effects Of Caregiver Burden And Satisfaction On Affect Of Older End-Stage Renal Disease Patients And Their Spouses, Maureen Wilson-Genderson, Rachel A Pruchno, Francine P Cartwright

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Faculty Scholarship

We examined the extent to which a 2-factor model of affect explains how the burdens and satisfactions experienced by caregivers influence their own well-being and that of the spouses for whom they provide care. Using data from 315 older patients with end-stage renal disease and their spouses, we extended tests of Lawton et al.'s (1991) 2-factor model both longitudinally and dyadically. Multilevel modeling analyses partially support the 2-factor model. Consistent with the model, mean caregiver burden has a stronger effect on both caregiver and patient negative affect than does mean caregiver satisfaction. Contrary to the model, mean caregiver satisfaction has …

Sexual Behaviors Of Students Studying Abroad, Jenna Smith Aug 2009

Sexual Behaviors Of Students Studying Abroad, Jenna Smith

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the risky sexual behaviors of students studying abroad, given that prior research has shown that individuals on vacation and international travelers are engaging in riskier sexual behavior while away from home. Participants included NJ university students, between the ages 18-50, who are currently or have studied abroad within the past 6 years. Student information was obtained from Rowan University and each individual was emailed a link to an anonymous online survey. The survey included questions from the Rosenburg Self-Esteem Questionnaire, Relationship Scale Questionnaire, Relationship Questionnaire and questions based on prior research (Milhausen …

Depressive Symptoms And Marital Satisfaction In The Context Of Chronic Disease: A Longitudinal Dyadic Analysis, Rachel Pruchno, Maureen Wilson-Genderson, Francine P Cartwright Aug 2009

Depressive Symptoms And Marital Satisfaction In The Context Of Chronic Disease: A Longitudinal Dyadic Analysis, Rachel Pruchno, Maureen Wilson-Genderson, Francine P Cartwright

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Faculty Scholarship

These analyses examined the longitudinal relationships between depressive symptoms and marital satisfaction over a 2-year period as experienced by 315 patients with end-stage renal disease and their spouses. Using multilevel modeling, the authors examined both individual and cross-partner effects of depressive symptoms and marital satisfaction on patients and spouses, testing bidirectional causality. Results indicate that mean and time-varying depressive symptoms of both patients and spouses were associated with their own marital satisfaction. Although mean marital satisfaction was associated with own depressive symptoms for both patients and spouses, time-varying marital satisfaction did not affect depressive symptoms for either patients or spouses. …

Predicting Perceptions Of Rape: Relationship Status And Perpetrator Motivation, Lisa M. Romano Jun 2009

Predicting Perceptions Of Rape: Relationship Status And Perpetrator Motivation, Lisa M. Romano

Theses and Dissertations

The primary purpose of this study was to examine whether perpetrator motivation or relationship status of the victim and perpetrator influence participant perceptions of a sexual assault. Participants were 143 students exposed to a stimulus in which the perpetrator's motivation was varied as having feelings of entitlement, rejection, or sexually motivated. The relationship status of the victim and perpetrator were also varied as either dating for six months or on a first date (acquaintance). Male participants were found to attribute more blame to the victim and less blame to the perpetrator when compared to female participants. Women who read the …

The Effects Of Rumination On Social Problem-Solving In Depressed And Anxious Mood, Yong W. Lee Jun 2009

The Effects Of Rumination On Social Problem-Solving In Depressed And Anxious Mood, Yong W. Lee

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if the relationship between rumination and social problem-solving changes based on symptom level, rumination status, type of social problem solving measure used, or type of problem being solved. Specifically, this study examined if rumination impairs social problem-solving by negatively distorting interpretations of problematic situations, promotes an avoidance problem-solving style, and/or impairs rational problem-solving. In the current study, measures of depressive and anxious symptoms, rumination, and social problem-solving were administered to 129 undergraduate students. Three multivariate analysis of variances revealed that the relationship between rumination and social problem-solving was unique to ruminators with …

The Relationship Between Early Maladaptive Schemas, Chronic And Acute Depression, And Help Seeking Behaviors, Jason Walker May 2009

The Relationship Between Early Maladaptive Schemas, Chronic And Acute Depression, And Help Seeking Behaviors, Jason Walker

Theses and Dissertations

Depression is a disorder that affects many people's lives; approximately 24% of Americans are diagnosed with some form of depression in their lifetime. In order to effectively treat depression we must first understand the disorder and how the symptoms affect people. This study aims to investigate unipolar depression in two ways through the use of a questionnaire. One is to understand the etiology of depression, specifically the role of Early Maladaptive Schemas in the etiology of chronic and acute depression. Hierarchical regressions on 88 participants indicated that EMS and anxiety significantly predict acute and chronic depression. The other aim of …

The Psychosocial Effects Of Rape On Heterosexual And Homosexual Men, Alison Heather Litvack May 2009

The Psychosocial Effects Of Rape On Heterosexual And Homosexual Men, Alison Heather Litvack

Theses and Dissertations

The present study evaluated the psychosocial effects of rape on heterosexual and homosexual men. It was hypothesized that 1) non-closeted homosexual men would have less symptomology and more resilience than closeted homosexual men and heterosexual men; 2) the more protective factors a man had, the less symptomology he would display and the more likely he would exhibit posttraumatic growth; 3) there would be an interaction between sexual orientation of the perpetrator and sexual orientation of the victim on symptomology. One-way ANOVAs revealed that homosexual men and bisexual men reported significantly less PTSD symptomology than heterosexual men. Further, homosexual men endorsed …

Risk Factors And Protective Factors For Depression In Early Maturing Females, Lauren Lirio May 2009

Risk Factors And Protective Factors For Depression In Early Maturing Females, Lauren Lirio

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of early onset of menstruation and biological father absence on depression in females. Participants (n=46) were asked to complete a demographic questionnaire and a series of psychometric assessments. It was hypothesized that females who reached puberty earlier than their peers as well as females growing up in a one-parent household, with the biological father absent, would experience more depressive symptoms than females who reached puberty later than their peers or were being raised in two-parent households. Statistical analyses revealed early maturing females reported higher levels of depressive symptoms than on-time …

Sexual Harassment: Male Dominance Or Positions Of Power In The Workplace?, Bobbi Jo Hardimon May 2009

Sexual Harassment: Male Dominance Or Positions Of Power In The Workplace?, Bobbi Jo Hardimon

Theses and Dissertations

Sexual harassment in the workplace is a growing issue. It is difficult to determine which case is sexual harassment and which is not. Many cases that make it to the court room involve female victims. This study examines if women are in fact seen as the victim more often or if men are taken less seriously. Participants include 98 employees of various organizations of Southern New Jersey. Each participant was given four case studies. The genders and relationship of workers vary in each case. Each case involves one male and one female that have either a co-worker relationship of equal …

Gender Differences In Levels Of Suggestibility, Tara Godino May 2009

Gender Differences In Levels Of Suggestibility, Tara Godino

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined differences in levels of suggestibility with regard to gender and three personality characteristics (self-esteem, self-monitoring, and social desirability) and how these differences apply to matters of eyewitness testimony. A total of 70 undergraduates (37 male, 33 female) completed a memory task followed by three personality inventories (the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the Self-Monitoring Scale, and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale) and then a questionnaire relating to the memory task. The dependent variable was number wrong for factual vs. leading questions. More leading questions were answered incorrectly than factual which was a significant difference. A repeated measures ANOVA revealed …

Criminally Responsible Or Insane? The Influence Of Jurors' Concept Of Self Toward The Insanity Defense, Marta Hess May 2009

Criminally Responsible Or Insane? The Influence Of Jurors' Concept Of Self Toward The Insanity Defense, Marta Hess

Theses and Dissertations

The investigator examined the relationship between jurors' locus of control and verdict. Three hypothetical insanity cases were constructed: mental illness, mental retardation, and drug intoxication, and were randomly distributed to 96 graduate students from a mid- Atlantic university. Participants read a murder vignette and selected a verdict-either guilty or not guilty by reason of insanity (NGRI). To measure locus of control, the investigator administered Rotter's Internal-External Locus of Control Scale. As predicted, results indicated that participants' locus of control influenced their verdict and that internally oriented participants were more likely than externally oriented participants to choose the guilty verdict (p=.044). …

Attentional Biases And Ptsd Symptomology In Victims Of Sexual Assault And Motor Vehicle Accidents, Orin R. Redmond May 2009

Attentional Biases And Ptsd Symptomology In Victims Of Sexual Assault And Motor Vehicle Accidents, Orin R. Redmond

Theses and Dissertations

While the field of change detection and attentional biases has become an increasingly popular area of study and much is already known about Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), very little research has been done integrating these two areas. In the present study, we chose to investigate two types of traumatic experiences prevalent in the college population, motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) and sexual assaults. The flicker paradigm, used to measure change detection, was utilized to examine hypersensitivity to environments with threatening stimuli in individuals whom experienced either of these traumas. The paradigm monitored reaction times to identifying changes that took place in …

Early Maladaptive Schemas Mediating The Relationship Between Perceptions Of Early Parenting And Depression And Anxiety, Monique Schatzman May 2009

Early Maladaptive Schemas Mediating The Relationship Between Perceptions Of Early Parenting And Depression And Anxiety, Monique Schatzman

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined how EMS's mediate the relationship between perceptions of early parenting and depressive and anxious symptoms. The overall hypothesis was that EMS's based on the total score of YSQ-S3 would mediate the relationship between parental styles based on the YPI and depressive and anxious symptoms. Results indicated support for the mediating effects of EMS's in the relationship between perceptions of early parenting and depressive and anxious symptoms. EMS's mediated the overprotective, belittling, pessimistic/fearful, and punitive mother with depression. EMS's mediated the emotionally depriving, overprotective, belittling, pessimistic/fearful, controlling, and emotionally inhibited father with depression. EMS's also mediated the emotionally …

Pediatric Feeding Problems Related To Tactile Defensiveness: A Case Study, Lauren Maguire May 2009

Pediatric Feeding Problems Related To Tactile Defensiveness: A Case Study, Lauren Maguire

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this exploratory, single-subject design study was to introduce to a child with a severe feeding disorder and tactile sensitivity different activities related to food in an attempt to increase the child's acceptance of new foods. After a baseline assessment, the child and his parents participated in a 12-week intervention that included at least one new tactile activity and a selection of new foods the parents identified that they wanted their child to eat. In the process of conducting this study, an underlying medical problem was identified; therefore, halfway through the study, the child began to take medication …

Stress-Induced Changes In The Expression Of Monocytic Β2-Integrins: The Impact Of Arousal Of Negative Affect And Adrenergic Responses To The Anger Recall Interview, Jeffrey M. Greeson, James G. Lewis, Karen Achanzar, Eugene Zimmerman, Kenneth H. Young, Edward C. Suarez Feb 2009

Suarez

Faculty Scholarship for the College of Science & Mathematics

Adhesion of circulating monocytes to the vascular endothelium is one of the earliest steps in the development of atherosclerosis. This leukocyte-to-endothelium interaction is mediated in part by β2-integrins, a group of cell adhesion molecules that bind to endothelial ligands. Given the significance of this interaction to atherogenesis, we examined the effects of stress, operationalized as the arousal of negative affect (NA) and cardiovascular and catecholamine responses to the Anger Recall Interview (ARI), on the expression of LFA-1 (CD11a), Mac-1 (CD11b) and p150/95 (CD11c) on circulating monocytes (CD14+). Subjects were 173 healthy, nonsmoking men and women (60% men, 40% minorities, aged …

Tolerance Of Sexual Harassment: A Laboratory Paradigm, D. J. Angelone, Damon Mitchell, Kara Carola Jan 2009

Tolerance Of Sexual Harassment: A Laboratory Paradigm, D. J. Angelone, Damon Mitchell, Kara Carola

Title IX Research and Resources

The present study attempted to develop a laboratory analogue for the study of tolerance for sexual harassment by using an online speed-dating paradigm. In that context, the relation between participants’ sexual harassment attitudes, perpetrator attractiveness, perpetrator status, and perceived dating potential of the perpetrator were examined as factors influencing participants’ tolerance of sexually harassing behavior. Participants were 128 female college students from a small northeastern public university. Results indicated that attractiveness, high social status, and attitudinal beliefs about sexual harassment were all predictive of tolerance for sexual harassment, providing preliminary support for the validity of this paradigm. In addition, participants’ …
