Suicidal Behavior Among Elementary School Students And Current Needs In Prevention Practices: A Survey Of Virginia School Counselors, Maranda K. D. Vandyke

Most of the research on suicidal behavior has focused on the middle and high school level, and an extensive review of the literature shows that more information is needed on the current needs and prevention practices at the elementary school level. In Virginia, school psychologists rated school counselors the top professional in elementary schools to lead suicide intervention and prevention efforts. Due to this, the current study examined 161 Virginia school counselors’ responses to an online survey to further explore intervention and prevention efforts among school professionals. Recent years have brought about an increase in the number of families who experience the deployment of a loved one. While deployment is a difficult experience for each member of the family, children are particularly vulnerable during these separations. Researchers have identified specific phases of the deployment cycle as well as potential child reactions during each stage. As schools nation-wide continue to become increasingly diverse, the need for multicultural education curricula is becoming an absolute necessity. Within the school setting, counselors, teachers, administrators and other personnel are in an ideal position to serve as positive role models and to help shape the students into citizens who respect and value the diversity of their society.
