The Need For Compensating Victims Of Violent Crime, Alan Roger Phelps
The Need For Compensating Victims Of Violent Crime, Alan Roger Phelps
Masters Theses
This paper identifies how the victim of violent crime in the United States receives little attention from his or her government. A review of the historical developments which highlight how civilized society has taken the right to punish, negotiate, and receive direct compensation away from the methods of compensating crime victims are examined. Finally, this paper demonstrates how, by utilizing victim compensation programs, the criminal justice system will be improved and the amount of crime and number of victimizations in our society will be reduced.
Coalition Politics In Malaysia, Zakiah Awang
Coalition Politics In Malaysia, Zakiah Awang
Masters Theses
This thesis has attempted to explain the success and the stability of the coalition party system in Malaysia from 1955 to 1982. This success has been attributed to three factors.
The most important factor is the role played by political elites. Malaysian political elites come from a different racial background. It is their willingness to cooperate, work together in harmony and to find solutions through compromises that helped to hold the coalition party together. Elite cooperation, in turn, has been fostered through similarities in the leaders' socioeducational- linguistic backgrounds.
The success of the coalition party is also closely linked to …
The Moral Majority: The Fundamental1st-Christian's Fight Against Humanism And Pluralism In American Politics, James A. Kruis
The Moral Majority: The Fundamental1st-Christian's Fight Against Humanism And Pluralism In American Politics, James A. Kruis
Masters Theses
The Moral Majority claims to be nonreligious but they are actually a very religious reaction against humanism and pluralism, fighting their battle from behind a facade of legitimate moral issues. Their reaction against humanism is due to their failure to distinguish properly between religion and morality. Their reaction against pluralism is a result of the fact that pluralism has been overextended and thus weakened, making it vulnerable to attack. In place of humanism and pluralism the Moral Majority advocates more freedom: freedom from government interference and freedom to solve social problems with "moral, spiritual" solutions.
The Moral Majority could make …

An Arms Race In Outer Space Between The United States And The Soviet Union Implications For U.S. Foreign Policy, Gary Morgan Jensen
An Arms Race In Outer Space Between The United States And The Soviet Union Implications For U.S. Foreign Policy, Gary Morgan Jensen
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
The development of an operational anti-satellite capability by the Soviet Union, and the corresponding U.S. effort to develop an anti-satellite capability of its own, are gradually propelling both nations into a space arms race. The militarization of outer space moves forward as both superpowers launch an increasing number of satellites on military missions. This emerging space race has important foreign policy implications for the United States. Will the two superpowers move in the direction of increased competition and possible confrontation in outer space, or will they agree to the need for some kind of achievable space arms control agreement? The …

American Athletics And The Law : The Sports Triangle, Brian M. Sheahan
American Athletics And The Law : The Sports Triangle, Brian M. Sheahan
Honors Theses
Colleges and universities regularly award scholarships to outstanding young athletes. The standard financial aid agreement between the institution and the athlete is that in return for the athlete's active participation in the particular sport, he or she receives free tuition, room, board and books.
In addition to the education and athletic involvements, the giving of financial aid has numerous implications on the relationship between the college or university and the athlete. Foremost among those implications is the potential legal entanglement under the law of workmen's compensation.
The major questions which are in front of the courts today in conjunction with …

The Marxian And The Weberian Theories Of Bureaucracy: Contradictions And Approximations, Khai Leong Ho
The Marxian And The Weberian Theories Of Bureaucracy: Contradictions And Approximations, Khai Leong Ho
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study is to analyse (1) the basic elements in Marx's and Weber's theories of bureaucracy, and (2) the contradictions and approximations that appear in both the Marxian and the Weberian paradigms. An attempt is made to examine the dysfunctional aspects of bureaucracy in relation to the Weberian model, and the bureaucratization of socialism which is the unanticipated consequence of the Marxian model. The conclusion of this study indicates that the two seemingly opposite approaches, after all, have certain similarities in their theoretical framework and in their practical dilemma.

Impact Of The 1980 Election On Ideological Liberal Organizations, Michael Coval
Impact Of The 1980 Election On Ideological Liberal Organizations, Michael Coval
Honors Theses
Throughout this section, I sought to establish a nexus between interest group theory and empirical observations. This in turn, would provide the framework from which I would set forth a series of hypotheses concerning the impact of the deviating 1980 elections on ideological liberal organizations. What I found in fact, was not just a link but a near perfect correlation between theory and practice, each reinforcing the other and pointing to the same ineluctable conclusion: The upshot of the Reagan/New Right landslide of 1980 was a dramatic renaissance of American liberalism. A renaissance so pervasive that ideological liberal organizations stand …
Community Power And Powerless Communities: Two Theories Of Urban Politics, Jonathan Pincus
Community Power And Powerless Communities: Two Theories Of Urban Politics, Jonathan Pincus
Honors Papers
I will not attempt to illustrate this point through a comprehensive literature review of urban politics; such an enterprise would most likely yield more reams than results. Instead, I will examine the pro-growth bias of two prominent theories of urban politics; pluralism – as represented by Robert Dahl, Nelson Polsby, Edward C. Banfield and Raymond Wolfinger – and Paul E. Peterson’s most recent work City Limits. These two approaches share fundamental methodological and normative foundations that lead to an emphasis on process over outcomes in city politics.
This emphasis provides a justification for existing political and economic conditions by collapsing …
The Effects Of Different Competitive Situations On The Political Content Of Daily Newspapers, Deborah Joan Stalker
The Effects Of Different Competitive Situations On The Political Content Of Daily Newspapers, Deborah Joan Stalker
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The value of the daily newspaper to the individuals who read it is at the core of this study. Some have felt that the newspaper has been affected for the worse by a loss in competition in many communities. Their worries often centre on the effects that the loss could have on the role of a newspaper and on its responsibilities to the public. The previous research on this topic has failed to turn up evidence of a substantial difference between monopoly and competitive newspapers. Canadian works on this subject were scant and, in light of the report of the …
The Technical, Legal And Political Implications Of Remote Sensing Satellites, Matthew Mahoney
The Technical, Legal And Political Implications Of Remote Sensing Satellites, Matthew Mahoney
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This thesis examines the phenomenon of reconnaissance satellites and their role in the present arms race. While volumes of material have been written on the arms race in general, or the weapons race in particular, very little has been written on the role of satellites in this conflict and almost nothing has been written on the role of reconnaissance satellites. There is a need for much greater debate on the role of reconnaissance satellites in outer space. Reconnaissance satellites have, in part, rewritten the meaning of the arms race and they have contributed significantly to arms reductions talks between the …
Polish Foreign Policy And The Development Of The Conference On Security And Cooperation In Europe, Keijiro Yasui
Polish Foreign Policy And The Development Of The Conference On Security And Cooperation In Europe, Keijiro Yasui
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis concerns the connection between the development of Polish foreign policy and the evolution of the Warsaw Pact's proposals for an all European Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE). The first concrete CSCE proposal was put forward by Poland in 1964. It reflected the Soviet Union's interests as well as those of Poland's.
The proposals were closely related to the situation which World War II had created for Poland. During the war Poland was massacred by both the Germans and the Soviets. It lost almost half of its territory to the Soviet Union and was moved to …
The State And Underdevelopment In Spanish America: The Political Roots Of Dependency In Peru And Argentina From The Conquest To 1895, Douglas Stuart Friedman
The State And Underdevelopment In Spanish America: The Political Roots Of Dependency In Peru And Argentina From The Conquest To 1895, Douglas Stuart Friedman
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This study challenges the dependency perspective claim that Spanish American countries developed agro/mineral export economies in the nineteenth century as a result of their integration into the capitalist international economy. It offers an alternative interpretation which argues that the process of State building and the response of the emergent Spanish American States to internal political class struggles were chiefly responsible for setting the direction of their economies as well as the degree and character of their integration into the international economy.
Rather than focusing on the effects of the international economy in explaining the roots of dependency and underdevelopment in …
North Korean Relations With China And The Soviet Union: The Impacts Of Changes In The Leadership Of The Two Communist Powers On North Korea, Myung-Ork Park
North Korean Relations With China And The Soviet Union: The Impacts Of Changes In The Leadership Of The Two Communist Powers On North Korea, Myung-Ork Park
Masters Theses
The Democratic People's Republic of Korea was established in September 1948, under the Soviet military occupation. Until Stalin's death in 1953, Soviet influence was predominant in North Korea because of Stalin as well as Soviet power. Stalin, who viewed North Korea as important to the security interests of Russia to defend the Asian front, handpicked Kim Il-sung and supported him to rise to power for the purpose of the Soviet control over the North. Kim Il-sung adopted the Stalinist model of communism which still persists. The Stalin-Kim relationship and North Korean military and economic dependence on Russia led to Pyongyang …
