2016 Presidential Campaign And The American College Student, Madison Frost
2016 Presidential Campaign And The American College Student, Madison Frost
Scholars Week
It is perceived by many that college students have low awareness of the presidential campaign and its candidates. Many blame the sources from which knowledge is attained. Most researchers agree that the Internet and newspaper are the most popular sources, and both are positively related to political knowledge (Kenski & Stroud, 2006; Valentino, Hutchings, & Dmitri, 2004; Cao, 2008). Cao (2008) also found a positive association between young adults and political comedy shows, which have become even more popular since 2008. Other researchers found that watching presidential debates increased knowledge of candidates, but only individuals who were already interested in …
Mujeres Libres: Lessons On Anarchism And Feminism From Spain's Free Women, Alexandra Hastings
Mujeres Libres: Lessons On Anarchism And Feminism From Spain's Free Women, Alexandra Hastings
Scholars Week
Mujeres Libres was an anarchist women's organization formed during the Spanish Civil War from 1936-1939 by women who were working to eliminate the rampant, hypocritical sexism within the anarchist movement. Although Mujeres Libres was only active for three years, they mobilized over 20,000 women who all recognized that anarchism and feminism go hand in hand. This paper argues that Mujeres Libres was a successful example of both anarchism and feminism in practice, and contemporary feminists should see the framework and philosophy of this organization as something to model their own women's liberation movement after.

Vietnamese Contract Workers In The East German Republic, Sean W. Hough
Celebration
This paper will analyze the historical and cultural conditions that affected how the German Democratic Republic treated one of its largest minority groups, the Vietnamese. During the height of the Cold War and as Decolonization reached its peak phase in the 1960s and 70s, these two factors pushed the GDR and Vietnam closer, which resulted in an exchange in workers. Contract Workers were brought to the GDR to work in an environment "united in socialist solidarity." However, despite this rhetoric, age-old racism, xenophobia, and Orientalism still infiltrated the so called "Socialist Paradise," as the GDR was often called by its …

Print Media In The Cold War, Madeline Chu
Young Historians Conference
This investigation evaluates the degree to which print media propaganda in America reflected its anti-Communist ideologies during the early years of the Cold War. Specifically, the decade following the end of World War II in 1945 is examined. The messages, mediums, and subjects addressed of four images are analyzed in order to determine the degree to which they embody anti-Communist sentiments. These four pieces include a Time magazine cover from 1950, a comic book cover, a page of a Life magazine fashion article, and an advertisement by Radio Free Europe. Through these images, a conclusion was reached that while anti-Communist …
An Evaluation Of Constitutional Implementation In Kenya, Frances Mcevoy
An Evaluation Of Constitutional Implementation In Kenya, Frances Mcevoy
Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD
This paper seeks to find what impact Kenya’s new Constitution and its implementation had on citizen political participation since promulgation. Using a framework developed from Robert Dahl, it finds the Constitution and constitutional implementation positively affected citizen political participation in the first five years of implementation. The Constitution secured the citizens’ right of participation and made citizen political participation part of most governing institutions. Constitutional implementation improved citizens access to participation in three key areas: voting, elections, and responsive institutions.
Exploring Cross-National Differences In The Incarceration Of Women: A Conjunctive Analysis Approach, Breanna Boppre, Terance D. Miethe, Emily J. Salisbury
Exploring Cross-National Differences In The Incarceration Of Women: A Conjunctive Analysis Approach, Breanna Boppre, Terance D. Miethe, Emily J. Salisbury
Graduate Research Symposium (GCUA) (2010 - 2017)
Cross-national studies of imprisonment rates have examined the social, political, and economic conditions associated with criminal punishments. However, because of the higher numbers of male incarcerated and the lack of national data disaggregated by gender, most previous research on imprisonment rates has focused directly or indirectly on the socio-economic predictors of male imprisonment rates. Using disaggregated data for 128 nations, the current study employs the method of conjunctive analysis to explore the unique and common effects of particular social conditions that underlie female incarceration rates. Measures of nations’ social development, violent crime rates, socio-economic inequality, and political instability are used …

There is an implicit assumption behind advocating for women in elected offices that descriptive representation of women lead to a corresponding political output. This would mean that gender is one of the indicators of legislative behavior. To examine the role of gender in the substantial representation of women, I focus on the agenda setting process, which I measure as the sponsorship of group interest legislation. Data include all bills introduced in lower Houses of ten states, which provide necessary variance to control for party effect, overall ranking of the status of women, and level of women’s presence in a state …

Life, Liberty, And The Lack Of Paid Parental Leave: An Analysis Of Media Framing Of Parental Leave In The United States, Marissa A. Baly
Life, Liberty, And The Lack Of Paid Parental Leave: An Analysis Of Media Framing Of Parental Leave In The United States, Marissa A. Baly
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
Because the United States is the only developed country without mandatory paid maternity leave, I felt called to study unpaid maternity leave in the U.S. for my research in the Political Science Honors Program. The study, “Life, Liberty, and the Lack of Paid Parental Leave,” is an analysis of media framing of parental leave in the United States. In the study, I conducted a content analysis of over 200 news articles of the New York Times, and also created an Institutional Review Board-approved survey distributed to introductory political science classes. In the content analysis, I found that maternity leave is …

Local Government Reconsidered
"Five years ago, when Tom Tait began his first term as the Mayor of the Great City of Anaheim, he took the reins of a complex set of challenges.
To most of the world, Anaheim is known as the home of world-class sports teams, internationally renowned attractions, and of course - a very famous mouse. Yet in stark parallel, the city also faced some of the most challenging issues to confront a mayor; homelessness, drug abuse, gang violence and human trafficking.
However Tom had a plan. A single strategy to bring together the polar opposites; to empower law enforcement, community …
