Not Ready To Make Nice: A Study Of The Intimate Relationship Of The Chicks' Music And Politics, Danielle Bishop

Master's Theses

In 2003, Natalie Maines, the lead singer of the band then known as the Dixie Chicks, made a political statement to an all British audience. Her statement was both critical of the Iraq War that America had just entered, and also critical of then-President Bush. The Chicks were immediately blacklisted, with audiences burning the Chicks merchandise and radio stations refusing to play any of the music penned by the Chicks. In this thesis, the causal factors behind this level of backlash will be evaluated. Previous studies have indicated the significant impact of gender and music and how this has an …

Afghan Decision-Making In A Development Context, Daniel Stent Jan 2021

Afghan Decision-Making In A Development Context, Daniel Stent

Master's Theses

Numerous theories exist showing the relationship between stress and decision-making strategies. Conflict Theory, as expressed by Mann et al. (1997) explains that when facing a major decision, individuals will respond to the stress of that decision by using one of four decision-making strategies: vigilance, buckpassing, procrastination, and hypervigilance. In matching Conflict Theory with the cultural scales proposed by Hofstede (2001), the decision-making strategies of buckpassing and procrastination are preferred by individuals from collectivist cultures in contrast to people from individualistic cultures. The current study used Mann’s Melbourne Decision-Making Questionnaire in the context of Afghanistan. This research is pertinent given the …

Struggles In State Building In Multi-Ethnic And Multi-Religious Lebanon And Bosnia, Zachary Ruch

Master's Theses

Lebanon and Bosnia are quite possibly the most divided nations on earth with each having multiple ethnic and religious populations. Both nations have had disastrous civil wars that included some of the most brutal killing in the 20th century. With the intervention of foreign powers both nations were able to set aside their differences and come to a peace settlement. In both cases the peace settlements accomplished its ultimate goal of ending the violence. The subsequent scholarship however created unrealistically high expectations for these settlements to foster a democratic culture and build a national consensus. This paper seeks to understand …

The Impact Of Smart City Initiatives On Cities’ Local Economic Development, Wesam Musa

Master's Theses

The Role Of American Tyranny In Iran's Nuclear Production: The Framework Of Public Law 112-158 Iran Threat Reduction Act Of 2011, Kimberly Jones May 2014

The Role Of American Tyranny In Iran's Nuclear Production: The Framework Of Public Law 112-158 Iran Threat Reduction Act Of 2011, Kimberly Jones

Master's Theses

The use of war pretext in foreign policy has been studied for decades. Several theories have established how pretext are used to manage public opinions about war. Arguably, the U.S. government uses pretext to obscure the awkwardness of justifying aggressive or offensive activities to the public. U.S. accusations of Iran’s development of nuclear weapons give justification for imposing economic sanctions, but it is an act of war. Public Law 112-158 penalizes states that pay Iran for its oil. Given its current economic weakness, the U.S. government must wield its military power to retain its global preeminence. Oil that is not …

California's 2011 Realignment Legislation Addressing Public Safety And How It Will Impact Local Governments, John Mineau

Master's Theses

California’s 2011 Realignment Legislation Addressing Public Safety is the most sweeping public safety reform package since shortly after California’s statehood in 1850. Traditionally, any person convicted and confined for a felony has been incarcerated and supervised by the state. Moving forward, realignment will put many convicted felons in local jails instead of state prisons. It will also place paroling offenders under local probation supervision rather than state parole. The change in parole supervision represents a monumental shift of responsibility from the state to local governments. Realignment will have major effects on local government operations and budgets. Realignment has been conceptualized …

A Financial Study Of The City Of Hays, Ellis County, Kansas, Lorenze Randall Bingham May 1936

A Financial Study Of The City Of Hays, Ellis County, Kansas, Lorenze Randall Bingham

Master's Theses

The great problem of municipal finance with which a majority of our municipalities are confronted at the present time is a problem that can be attacked only through a slow process of analysis and investigation. Slashing of salaries, indiscriminate dispensing with the various services offered by the city in prosperous times, and increasing of bonded indebtedness will not in any sense provide a permanent solution to the problem. The difficulty is in tracing the course of money taken in by the city from its source to its ultimate use in providing that which the citizens demand. When this has been …
