Republican Ideology And American Diplomats: The Roles Of John Jay And James Monroe, Helen Kello Hill

History Theses & Dissertations

Republican ideology is the basis of a case study of the diplomatic careers of John Jay and James Monroe. Both men were committed to a republican form of government but each perceived it differently. Likewise they viewed diplomacy and the role oi a diplomat differently. In establishing the republicanism oi both Jay and Monroe extensive use was made of their private and public correspondence. Through these letters it becomes apparent that Monroe's republican commitment fed his incipient paranoid personality in that he constantly looked homeward for approval. On the other hand, John Jay's elitist perspective did not lead him to …

The Failure Of The Peaceful Road To Socialism: Chile 1970-1973, Trevor Andrew Iles

Masters Theses

On September 4, 1970 Salvador Allende became the first ever democratically elected Marxist president of Chile. In addition he headed a predominantly left-wing coalition government whose program entailed the achieving of socialism by peaceful means.

During the first six months of his administration Allende began to carry out a number of his policies in the areas of agrarian reform, nationalization of industries, and redistribution of income. These policies were populist in nature and succeeded in raising the level of support for the Unidad Popular government as shown by the results of the April 1971 Municipal elections. I argue that the …

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This paper will explore further the process of selection of majority party leaders in the United States House of Representatives. It will seek to show that there were certain common denominators that existed among those who were selected for leadership positions between 1962 and 1976, and that these common denominators were not present in those individuals who challenged the leaders and lost. Additionally, it will be argued that those certain qualities were particularly important to the style of leadership during that period, and that their importance to that style allowed the development of an institutionalization of the selection process during …

Upton Sinclair And The 1934 California Gubernatorial Election, Patricia Lucy Hill Jan 1978

Upton Sinclair And The 1934 California Gubernatorial Election, Patricia Lucy Hill

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis attempts to ascertain whether Upton Sinclair's Democratic nomination for governor of California in 1934 caused the resurgence of the Democratic Party in California, or whether his nomination was a product of that party's resurgence between 1928 and 1942. Given Sinclair's decision on the unsuitability of the Socialist Party, were his judgments that: (1) the Democratic Party was in resurgence and, (2) it was moving to the left, sound ones? To make these determinations the thesis investigates why Sinclair rushed to capture the Democratic nomination, exploring his methods and techniques and those used to defeat him. It also examines …

Politics Of Land Use : The Lengthy Saga Of Senate Bill 100, Kathleen Joan Zachary

The Land Use Policy Committee minutes and Legislative minutes were merged with information attained through personal interviews from a variety of participants in the drafting of the Senate Bill 100. Theoretical literature was equally available in Public Administration, Law and Land Use Planning. The Constitutions …
