Traversing Swanton Road, 21st Ed., James A. West
Traversing Swanton Road, 21st Ed., James A. West
Academic, Government & Associated Organizational Research Resources
Situated at the northwest end of Santa Cruz County and occupying circa 30 square miles of sharply contrasted terrain, the Scott Creek Watershed concentrates within its geomorphological boundaries, at least 10-12% of California's flora, both native and introduced. Paradoxically, the use/abuse that the watershed has sustained over the past 140+ years, has not necessarily diminished the biodiversity and perhaps parallels the naturally disruptive but biologically energizing processes (fire, flooding, landslides and erosion), which have also been historically documented for the area for +60 years. This is an early edition of an extensive document by James A. West. Please visit the …

Book Summary: While accessible to the interested general reader, it is a technical standard that is usable academically. Containing significant new information, this work is the most comprehensive and accurate book written about Catesby and is the legacy of the Catesby Commemorative Trust’s Mark Catesby Tercentennial symposium held in 2012.
Chapter Summary: Merian's books on European and Surinamese insects and plants provided new models for representing nature that were echoed in the work of artists and naturalists working in the eighteenth century and beyond. This chapter discusses how Mark Catesby, the subject of the book, was particularly influenced by Merian.

Historical Common Names Of Great Plains Plants, With Scientific Names Index. Volume Ii: Scientific Names Index, Elaine Nowick
Zea E-Books Collection
Containing thousands of entries of both vernacular and scientific names of Great Plains plants, the literature that informs this exhaustive listing spans nearly 300 years. Author Elaine Nowick has drawn from sources as diverse as Linnaeus, Lewis and Clark, and local university extension publications to compile the gamut of practical, and often fanciful, common plant names used over the years. Each common name is accompanied by a definitive scientific name with references and authority information. Interspersed with scientifically-correct botanical line drawings, the entries are written in standard ICBN format, making this a useful volume for scholars as well as lay …

The Effects Of Silica, Nitrogen, And Phosphorus Limitation On The Biochemical Composition Of Cyclotella Meneghiniana Kütz: An Experimental Analysis , David Fred Millie
David F. Millie
The effects of silica, nitrogen, and phosphorus limitation on the amount of cellular lipid, fatty acid, glucan, protein and chlorophyll of Cyclotella meneghiniana Kutz. were investigated in batch and semi-continuous culture experiments. In batch cultures, cells were removed from nutrient-replete media and resuspended in nutrient-deficient media according to a 2('3) factorial design in fractional replication. Cells were analyzed 3 and 9 days after transfer to treatment media. Of the 3 nutrients, only silica had a significant effect on a biochemical variable. Silica deficiency caused a significant increase (300%) in the amount of cellular protein. Cellular protein was also significantly different …

The Phytotronist And The Phenotype: Plant Physiology, Big Science, And A Cold War Biology Of The Whole Plant., David Munns
Publications and Research
This paper describes how, from the early twentieth century, and especially in the early Cold War era, the plant physiologists considered their discipline ideally suited among all the plant sciences to study and explain biological functions and processes, and ranked their discipline among the dominant forms of the biological sciences. At their apex in the late-1960s, the plant physiologists laid claim to having discovered nothing less than the “basic laws of physiology.” This paper unwraps that claim, showing that it emerged from the construction of monumental big science laboratories known as phytotrons that gave control over the growing environment. Control …

A Utah Flora, Fifth Edition, Revised, Stanley L. Welsh, N. Duane Atwood, Sherel Goodrich, Larry C. Higgins
Books by Faculty of the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum
Abstract
This is a revised version of a comprehensive treatment of the vascular flora of Utah. All new taxa and distributional records discovered since the publication of the second edition in 2003 are included.
Keys are provided to families, genera, species, and infraspecific taxa (when present). Taxa are described, ecological data is given, and geographical information is provided. County distribution in Utah is given for each species and infraspecific taxon. General geographical information is given for taxa that extend beyond the boundaries of Utah. Chromosome numbers are provided for each taxon, where that information was available in literature.
