Production Of The Subtropical Seagrass, Halodule Wrightii Aschers., In Lower Laguna Madre, Texas, Joseph L. Kowalski

The autecology of shoal grass, Halodule wrightii Aschers., was studied at 1.2 m depth from June 1995 to February 1997 in Lower Laguna Madre (LLM), Texas. Halodule wrightii in LLM received about 47% surface irradiance, but otherwise displayed lower growth rates and biomass in nutrient-poor rhizosphere and water-column environments compared to H. wrightii populations in other Texas estuaries. High tissue N content and low C:N ratios belied low growth dynamics. Halodule wrightii in LLM is probably nutrient limited. A high nutrient demand by H. wrightii in a nutrient-poor environment may explain, in part, its gradual displacement by Thalassia testudinum and …

The grains working group identified three crops which have sexually compatible weedy relatives likely to be subject to gene flow in US agricultural systems (Table 1). The ease of cross pollination and the successful production of a fertile hybrid vary with each case. If the selective advantage of an introduced trait is positive, however, introgression of the new trait into an existing weed population is possible. The risk of ecological harm is then dependent upon the habitat of the weed. This investigation englightens the morphological, anatomical and ecological characteristics of Kazdağı endemics namely Allium reuterianum Boiss. and Allium sibthorpianum Schultes & Schultes fil. (Liliaceae). A. sibthorpianum occurs in Bursa, Kütahya, Denizli, Isparta and Çanakkale (newly recorded), whereas A. reuterianum is found in Southwest Anatolia, Islands, Manisa, Denizli, Muğla, Isparta and Çanakkale (newly recorded). Root anatomy of A. sibthorpianum and A. reuterianum typically show exodermis and an empty pith. In addition in the scapes of both the species layering in the area between epidermis and cuticle results in its thickening. The leaves in both species are not hairy. Reticulate shaped open …

Recombinant DNA technology is a rapidly growing field in plant and animal breeding. This technology involves the transfer of pieces of DNA, or genes, regardless of the organisms involved or how they are related. Transformation procedures in plants were first developed for important crop and model plant systems. Although turfgrass management and production is one of the fastest growing areas of agriculture, genetic transformation of turfgrasses lags behind that of many other important crop plants.
