Germination, Growth And Biomass Accumulation As Influenced By Seed Size In Mesua Ferrea L., A. Arunachalam, M. L. Khan, N. D. Singh

Turkish Journal of Botany

Mesua ferrea L. was evaluated for its germination, seedling growth and biomass across four seed size classes. The production of two- and three-seeded fruits was high. The viability of the seeds was 58-81%. Germination was positively correlated with seed weight. Heavier seeds showed early and rapid germination. The contribution of leaves to total biomass yield was 27-60 % in 1-month old seedlings. Carbon content was also related with plant length and weight in the seedlings. The study concludes that the variations in seed size have a substantial influence on growth and biomass accumulation in Mesua ferrea. Such variation also helps …

Isozyme Variations In Some Aegilops L. And Triticum L. Species Collected From Central Anatolia, Mehmet Karcicio, Afi̇fe İzbirak

Turkish Journal of Botany

In this study the aspartate aminotransferase (AAT, E.C. 2.6.1.1), phosphoglucomutase (PGM, E.C. 5.4.2.2) and phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI, E.C. 5.3.1.9) isozyme patterns of nine different diploid and tetraploid wild wheat species belonging to the Aegilops L. and Triticum L. genera were analysed electrophoretically, using horizontal starch gel and non-denaturating polyacrylamide gel (only for AAT). All species were found to have three AAT isozyme zones (except for the AAT of Aegilops speltoides Tausch on starch gel) on both gels. While the migration distances of AAT-1 isozyme were similar, the AAT-2 and AAT-3 band patterns were different on both gels. A single PGI …

Polyphenol Oxidase Activity During Rooting In Cuttings Of Grape (Vitis Vinifera L.) Varieties, Hayrullah Yilmaz, Tuncer Taşkin, Bi̇rol Otludi̇l

Turkish Journal of Botany

Polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity was investigated during rooting in cuttings from three different grape cultivars (Vitis vinifera L. cvs. Muscat, Cardinal and Perlelte), and the enzyme activity and rooting ability were compared. Rooting was observed on the Muscat and Perlelte cuttings, but not on the Cardinal cuttings. PPO activity started to increase in the early stage of the experiment, and decreased after root emergence in the Muscat and Perlelte cuttings. However, enzyme activity started to increase in the early stages and continued throughout the experiment in the Cardinal cuttings. No apparent correlation was found between PPO activity and rooting ability …

Turkish Journal of Botany

The morphological characteristics, fertility and in vitro germination of natural tetraploid red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) pollen were examined as well as the characteristics of pollen tubes and callose formation. Pollen grains of red clover are tricolporate and usually the germination of pollen is monosphonic. Among the pollen tubes that were formed under in vitro conditions, in addition to those that went through the normal growth process, poorly or non-grown pollen tubes were also observed. In addition, some abnormalities in the form of callose deposition were observed in the pollen tubes.

In A. cilicica, the initiation of embryonal suspensor mass (ESM) frequency ranged from 5.4 to 63.5%, and 28.6% of these cell lines formed mature somatic embryos. In A. cilicica x A. nordmanniana, from 3 to 27.6% of zygotic embryos formed ESM, and maturation of somatic embryos was observed in 34.8% lines. For somatic embryo maturation, Murashige, Skoog and SH media supplemented with 4% maltose …

On The Presence Of Heterocapsa Pygmaea A.R.Loebl. (Peridiniales, Dinophyceae) In The Northern Levantine Basin (Eastern Mediterranean), Zahi̇t Uysal, Mitsunori Iwataki, Tufan Koray

Turkish Journal of Botany

The presence of the dinoflagellate Heterocapsa pygmaea A.R.Loebl. in bloom quantity is reported for the first time from Mersin Bay (northern Levantine basin, eastern Mediterranean). Further, it is the only species of the family Heterocapsaceae reported from Turkish seas (southern Black Sea, the Sea of Marmara, Aegean Sea, and north-eastern Mediterranean). Our observations on the fine structure of the body scale of the specimen suggested that the scale morphology is identical to that of H. pygmaea.

The nodal segments and shoot tips isolated from the primary cultures were cultured on hormone-free MS media containing 100 mg/l myo-Inositol, 150 mg/l glutamine and 2.5% sucrose for plant growth and elongation. Shoots for multiplication were maintained on MS media with low concentrations of …

Isoenzyme Variation Of Esterase And Acid Phosphatase And Genetic Affinities Among Dasypyrum Villosum (L.) P.Candargy, Elytrigia Repens (L.) Nevski And Elymus Caninus (L.) L., Georgi Borisov Angelov

Turkish Journal of Botany

Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was employed to study the isoenzyme variation of esterase and acid phosphatase in natural populations of Dasypyrum villosum (L.) P.Candargy, Elytrigia repens (L.) Nevski and Elymus caninus (L.) L. Four similarity indices (SI, S, D, I_h) were calculated in an attempt to evaluate quantitatively genetic affinities among the species examined. Considering index D, the species D. villosum proved to be equally distant (D = 0.17 in both cases) from the species pair Et. repens and El. caninus. The nearly twice lower value of D for the comparison between Et. repens and El. caninus is an indication of …

Planktonic Diatom (Bacillariophyceae) Flora Of Sultan Sazlığı Marshes (Kayseri), Aydin Akbulut

Turkish Journal of Botany

This paper describes the planktonic diatom flora of the Sultan Sazlığı marshes, Kayseri. Samples were collected systematically from the marshes over a period of 1.5 years from three stations. The diatom flora of Sultan Sazlığı is rich in terms of species and varieties, which are similar to those from many parts of Turkey. A total of 75 taxa of diatoms were identified. The diversity of species at freshwater stations was higher, than that of the brackish water station. Genera such as Fragilaria Lyngb., Navicula, Gomphonema Ehrenb., Nitzschia Hassall, Epithemia Bréb. ex Kütz. were dominant in species numbers.
