A Study Of Certain Community Relationships Of Eriogonum Corymbosum Benth In Dc In The Uintah Basin, Utah, Jack D. Brotherson Aug 1967

A Study Of Certain Community Relationships Of Eriogonum Corymbosum Benth In Dc In The Uintah Basin, Utah, Jack D. Brotherson

Theses and Dissertations

Eriogonum corymbosum Benth. in DC is a low-growing perennial shrub which is found in many cold temperate desert shrub regions of Colorado, Utah, and Nevada.. It is a species which grows on numerous soil types and/or geological formations. Specific objectives of the investigation were to study and describe certain community relationships of ten different plant communities where E. corymbosum was found. Each community was sampled to determine the amount of ground cover, percent composition, frequency, and density of each participating species. Physical site factors viz. soil texture, total soluble salts, pH, cation exchange capacity, and amount of calcium, magnesium, potassium, …

Investigation Of Nitrogen Fixation By Three Species Of Lichen, Dortha Maloy Robinson Aug 1967

Investigation Of Nitrogen Fixation By Three Species Of Lichen, Dortha Maloy Robinson

Theses and Dissertations

One species of lichen from each of three different families (Collema wyomingensis , Caloplaca elegans (Link)T. Fries, and Parmelia molliuscula Ach.) was studied to determine whether or not these lichens can fix atmospheric nitrogen. Samples of these three lichens were collected in the early spring of 1967. Samples of each species were placed in 20-ml glass tubes which contained 5 ml of glass wool saturated with 0.5 M nitrogen-free Hoaglands nutrient solution. These tubes were sealed by heat onto a gas manifold system and evacuated. An N15- enriched atmosphere (22 atoms % N15) was introduced into the tubes from the …

An Ecological Study Of The Algae And Mosses Of Cascade Springs, Wasatch County, Utah, Deanna Lynn Mccoard Aug 1967

An Ecological Study Of The Algae And Mosses Of Cascade Springs, Wasatch County, Utah, Deanna Lynn Mccoard

Theses and Dissertations

An ecological study was conducted at Cascade Springs, Wasatch county, Utah from August 1965, to June 1967. The algae and aquatic moss species were determined and ecological information about these organisms was obtained. Physical data were also collected: bicarbonates, carbonates, free carbon dioxide, hydroxides, oxygen, pH, and temperature. The physical environment of the water was found to be very constant. Tests taken at the different study sites were consistently similar, not only during each day, but all year around. No great variation of any kind was found in the water. In contrast to the water environment, the topography of the …

A Flora Of The Beaver Dam Mountains, Larry Charles Higgins Jul 1967

A Flora Of The Beaver Dam Mountains, Larry Charles Higgins

Theses and Dissertations

In this study an attempt was made to collect all plant species growing on the Beaver Dam Mountains, and to arrange them into a workable flora of the area. A study was also made of the collections in the herbaria of Brigham Young University and Dixie Junior College. From this information keys and descriptions for all plant families and genera were written, as well as keys to all the species. For each species the following information was also given; the distribution in North America, the elvational range, period of flowering, and the location on the Beaver Dam Mountains in which …

An Analysis Of An Unilateral Reproductive Isolation Barrier In Secale L, Harold James Price Jul 1967

An Analysis Of An Unilateral Reproductive Isolation Barrier In Secale L, Harold James Price

Theses and Dissertations

In the cross, S. cereale ♀ x S. africanum ♂, near normal seeds were formed. They showed 40% germination. In the reciprocal cross, S. africanum ♀ x S. cereale ♂, the seeds were dry, brittle, extremely shrivelled at maturity and none germinated. Reciprocal differences as sharp as those in crosses between S. cereale and S. africanum were not noted in crosses of S. cereale with S. montanum or with S. vavilovii. Seeds from the cross S. cereale ♀ x S. montanum ♂ showed 81% germination, whereas seeds from the reciprocal cross S. montanum ♀ x S. cereale ♂ showed 77% …

The Taxonomy And Ecology Of The Fleshy Fungus Flora Of The Snowbanks In The Mirror Lake Region Of The Uinta Mountains, Mary Virginia Charlton Dublin May 1967

The Taxonomy And Ecology Of The Fleshy Fungus Flora Of The Snowbanks In The Mirror Lake Region Of The Uinta Mountains, Mary Virginia Charlton Dublin

Theses and Dissertations

The ecology and taxonomy of the snowbank fleshy fungi in the vicinity of Mirror Lake, Uinta Mountains, Utah were investigated during 1963, 1964, and 1965. A total of 59 speciaes, representing the Agaricales, Polyporales, Thelephorales, Gastromycestes, Myxomycetes, Dacrymycetales, and Ascomycetes, were found associated with the snowbanks. Four of these species (Geupiniopsis alpinus, Polyporus alboluteus, Polyporus leucospongia and Sterile myclium I) have presence percentages of 100% and three (Stereum Rugisporum, Dasyscypha arida and Herpotichia nigra) had presence percentages of 90%. The lignicolous fungi were found to be more frequent around the snowbanks than either the terrestrial or coprophilous fungi. No fleshy …
