Irrigation System Maintenance, Candace Schaible, Kelly Kopp, Jennie Hoover
Irrigation System Maintenance, Candace Schaible, Kelly Kopp, Jennie Hoover
All Current Publications
Irrigation system maintenance is necessary to ensure the most efficient use of the water that is being applied. Efficient irrigation is important because over two-thirds of the total water used in the average Utah home is applied to the landscape. With the natural drought cycles that occur in Utah and the growing population, efficient water use is critical. These maintenance recommendations will help you evaluate your irrigation system before using it each spring and also throughout the growing season.

Water Conservation Practices For Irrigation Of Turfgrass Lawns, Daniel Sandor
Water Conservation Practices For Irrigation Of Turfgrass Lawns, Daniel Sandor
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Turfgrass lawns are widely used in residential and commercial landscapes, providing many environmental, aesthetic, and recreational benefits. However, concerns and scrutiny arise with perceived maintenance requirements, particularly with regards to irrigation. It is important to manage irrigation in order to maximize water conservation without significantly reducing lawn quality. A series of field and greenhouse studies were conducted to investigate how water usage might be reduced in irrigation practices with the following proposed objectives: 1) evaluate the use of rain and soil moisture sensors in a humid transition zone environment; 2) evaluate the effects of chronic drought stress between drought-resistant and …

Lawn Fertilizers For Cool Season Turf, Taun Beddes, Kelly Kopp
All Current Publications
Lawns provide a durable and functional surface for many outdoor activities while adding beauty to the landscape. For these reasons, a healthy, green lawn is the goal of many homeowners and landscape managers. Keeping a lawn healthy and green may require many management practices such as mowing, irrigation and aerification. Often, these practices will include fertilizing with supplemental nutrients at various times during the growing season. This promotes optimum turf color, improves re-growth, and increases tolerance to wear, drought, insects and disease. The broad number of fertilizer options available from retailers can make choosing a fertilizer difficult. However, choosing an …

Four fescue species are maintained as lawngrasses in Tennessee. Originally from Europe, these perennial, cool-season lawngrasses are an integral part of many Tennessee landscapes. They grow best in deep, well-drained soils at air temperatures from 60 to 75 F. High temperatures and drought often slow their rate of growth during late spring and summer. Species and varieties may vary in color, leaf texture, stand density, disease resistance and tolerance of shade, high temperature and drought. Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) is adapted to a wide range of soil and climatic conditions. This medium- to coarse-textured lawngrass tolerates high temperatures, …

Home Garden, Lawn, and Landscape
Bamboo species have nearly a worldwide distribution, with Europe and Antarctica the only continents that do not have native bamboo species. Taxonomically, bamboo is classified in the grass family (Poacea) and is represented by more than 1,000 species and 91 genera. Taken together, bamboo is recognized as the fastest-growing woody, evergreen, perennial plant.

Home Garden, Lawn, and Landscape
Many insects and insect-like pests damage lawns and other turf. They cause the grass to turn brown and die, or they build unsightly mounds that may smother the grass.
Some pests infest the soil and attack the plant roots, some feed on the plants’ leaves and stems, while others suck juice from the plants.
Other insects and insect-like pests inhabit lawns, but do not damage them. The pests are annoying and some of them attack people.
These pests can be controlled with insecticides. The recommendations in this publication are applicable not only to lawns, but also to such places as …

Lawns - Their Establishment And Management, H G. Elliott
Lawns - Their Establishment And Management, H G. Elliott
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3
It may be said that there is nothing more pleasing to the eye than a well kept lawn, be it in a home garden or covering a sporting area, and under Western Australian conditions there is no reason why a good lawn or turf cannot be developed and maintained-always provided that there is a sufficiency of water and proper care and attention are available.
