Effects Of Planting Dates On Field Emergence And Forage Yield Of Sudangrass And Sorghum, Fu-Hsing Hsu, Kong-Yuan Hong

Sudangrass (Sorghum sudanense) and sorghum (S. bicolor) are annual forage species with ratoon growth. Objectives of this experiment were to determine the effects of planting dates on field emergence and forage yield of sudangrass and sorghum. Sudangrass and sorghum were planted monthly from mid-March to mid-October in 1994 and 1995, respectively. Emerged plants were recorded daily. Surviving seedlings were determined 2 weeks after emergence. Emergence percentages of sudangrass ranged from 61.7% to 90.6% and those of sorghum ranged from 47.5% to 81.3% in 1994. All the surviving percentages were above 90% for both sudangrass and sorghum in 1994. …

This experiment was conducted with the aim of studying whether the frequency and intensity of defoliation of the temperate grass fromental (Arrhenatherum elatius (L.) Presl.) affected its total dry matter (DM)/ha yield as well as the seasonal distribution of forage. Plots were seeded in 1988 and data collected from 1989 to 1991. Two frequencies and two intensities of defoliation were combined in a two factor randomized complete block design with six replications. General And Specific Combining Ability For Forage Maize Aptitude. Part 1: Inbred Lines, R Burak, L M. Bertoia

Ten inbred maize lines were evaluated through their crosses in various environments with the aim of determining their forage production. The ear and stover dry matter were established separately, when variability for both components was found . The effect of the environment was mainly noted in the harvest index. The most outstanding lines were: B84 for ear yield and dry matter yield from the whole plant and L1 for stover yield. The crosses B84xL2 and B84xL6 produced non-additive effects which were significant for some variables. No significant differences were found when comparing the commercial checks with the highest yielding crosses.

A field assay was established at three locations in northern Spain with the main objective of characterizing forage production and evaluating no-tillage methods as an alternative to the conventional labour practices. Three fields located in Guntìn (Galicia), Grado (Asturias) and Derio (Basque Country) were sown different rotations: Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.)-corn (Zea mays L.) and Italian ryegrass-sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench x sudangrass) under two different systems: conventional tillage (T) and no-tillage (NT). Forage and seed production responses to nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilizer of Common buffelgrass (Cenchrus ciliaris L.) were evaluated for three years (1991-93). An incomplete factorial set of five rates of N and P were applied each year. Seed data were collected by hand stripping mature seed followed by a forage harvest. Seed quality characteristics were determined on each seed sample. No response to N fertilizer was observed in 1991 nor to P in any year. Height corresponding to the critical leaf area index (LAI) has been successfully used to define pre-grazing management targets in pastures subjected to intermittent stocking. However, studies on short/stoloniferous grasses have demonstrated that it is possible to manage pastures at heights below those corresponding to the critical LAI (with a threshold grazing height of approximately 65% of those corresponding to the critical LAI) and achieve a similar forage yield, provided that the severity of defoliation does not exceed 50 percent of the pre-grazing height.
