Wheat grain affected by Fusarium head blight (FHB) contains the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (DON) that is harmful to humans and animals. Reducing the amount of DON in grain is the goal of management practices for FHB so it is important to understand the factors affecting DON in grain. Some studies on the effects of late-season moisture found increases in DON while others found decreases due to leaching. Waterlogging is caused when water stays superficially in the soil for an extended period of time, creating an anaerobic environment which decreases plant growth and grain yield at maturity. Despite the impact of waterlogging on wheat production both globally and in the southeastern U.S., very little is known about the genetic control of waterlogging tolerance in wheat. World population will increase 35% by 2050, which may require doubling crop yields on existing farm land to minimize expansion of agriculture into remaining rainforests, wetlands, and grasslands. Whether this is possible depends on closing the gap between yield potential (Yp, yield without pest, disease, nutrient or water stresses, or Yw under water-limited rainfed conditions) and current average farm yields in both developed and developing countries. Quantifying the yield gap is therefore essential to inform policies and prioritize research to achieve food security without environmental degradation. This study was performed in order to determine toxic effects of different doses of Attribut (propoxycarbazone-sodium) used in wheat fields and BioPower (sodium alkyl ether sulphate) surfactant added to Attribut on Triticum aestivum L. ‘Pehlivan’. The doses used in the study were 0.42 mM Attribut, 0.82 mM Attribut, and 1.68 mM Attribut with or without 0.25% BioPower. Laboratory studies showed that the effective concentration value corresponded to the farmer dose, 0.42 mM Attribut. Applications were done by seed treatment. A study was conducted to assess whether foliar-applied nitric oxide (NO) could alleviate the adverse effects of salt stress on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Four sodium nitroprusside levels (control [water spray] and 0.05, 0.10, and 0.15 mM) were sprayed as a donor of NO on the leaves of cultivar S-24 plants grown under nonsaline and saline conditions (150 mM NaCl). Data for growth and yield, chlorophyll contents, activities of antioxidants, and concentrations of mineral nutrients were recorded. Aims — Decreased expression of TaNAM genes by RNAi results in delayed senescence and decreased grain protein, iron, and zinc concentrations. Here, we determined whether NAM expression level alters onset of senescence under stress conditions, whether delayed senescence in the TaNAM-RNAi line resulted in improved tolerance to post-anthesis abiotic stress, and determined the effects of post-anthesis abiotic stress on N and mineral remobilization and partitioning to grain.
