Agricultural Experiment Station and Research Farm Annual Reports

This eighth annual report of the research program at the Southeast South Dakota Experiment Farm has special significance for those engaged in agriculture and the agriculturally related businesses in the nine county area of southeast South Dakota. The results shown are not necessarily complete or conclusive. Interpretations given are tentative because additional data resulting from continuation of these experiments may result in conclusions different from those based on any one year.

Airplane-Seeded Wheat – Aid To Double Cropping, John Watts, S. H. Phillips Dec 1968

Airplane-Seeded Wheat – Aid To Double Cropping, John Watts, S. H. Phillips

Agronomy Notes

Airplane-seeding of wheat has been increasing since its start in 1965 in Fulton County, Kentucky. Over 20,000 acres were seeded in the fall of 1968, with the acreage concentrated in the Purchase and Bowling Green areas.

Farmers report these advantages for aerial seedings: (1) early establishment of small grain; (2) similar seeding cost as compared to drilling; (3) labor use in normal seeding operations diverted to other farm operations.

Rhizome And Tiller Development Of Kentucky Bluegrass (Poa Pratensis L.) As Influenced By Photoperiod, Cold Treatment, And Variety, Lowell E. Moser, S. R. Anderson, R. W. Miller Nov 1968

Rhizome And Tiller Development Of Kentucky Bluegrass (Poa Pratensis L.) As Influenced By Photoperiod, Cold Treatment, And Variety, Lowell E. Moser, S. R. Anderson, R. W. Miller

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Two controlled environment experiments were designed to study the effect of photoperiod and a cold treatment on rhizome and tiller development of ‘Merion’ and ‘Windsor’ Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) Evidence is given to support the following conclusions:

1. A cold treatment is not essential for rhizome formation. Cold treatments increased tillering but reduced the number of rhizomes.
2. Both initiation and elongation of rhizomes were favored by a 16 or 18-hour photoperiod when compared to a 8- or 12- hour photoperiod.
3. Tillering showed little response to initial photoperiod, although more tillers were formed with a 12-hour than …

Protein Synthesis During Fungal Spore Germination Ii. Aminoacyl-Soluble Ribonucleic Acid Synthetase Activities During Germination Of Botryodiplodia Theobromae Spores, James L. Van Etten, Robert Brambl Oct 1968

Protein Synthesis During Fungal Spore Germination Ii. Aminoacyl-Soluble Ribonucleic Acid Synthetase Activities During Germination Of Botryodiplodia Theobromae Spores, James L. Van Etten, Robert Brambl

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

The specific activities of 13 aminoacyl-soluble ribonucleic acid (sRNA) synthetases were measured at various time intervals during the germination of Botryodiplodia theobromae conidiospores. The enzyme activities were low or absent in ungerminated spores, and they increased rapidly as germination proceeded. When extracts of the ungerminated spores were prepared with mortar and pestle, very little or no enzyme activity was detected. When the extracts were prepared with a mechanical homogenizer, however, they exhibited some enzyme activity, although less than did the extracts from germinated spores. Enzyme activities from germinated spores were approximately the same, regardless of the method of preparation. The …

Mutation Induction In Melilotus Alba Annua By Chemical Mutagens, A. Kleinhofs, Herman J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins Sep 1968

Mutation Induction In Melilotus Alba Annua By Chemical Mutagens, A. Kleinhofs, Herman J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Hydroxylamine (HA), 2-aminopurine (AP), 5-bromouracil (BU), and ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) were tested for mutagenic activity on seeds of Melilotus alba annua. Mutants were classified into the following categories: o-hydroxycinnamic acid (o-HCA) content and β-glucosidase activity, chlorophyll deficiency, dwarf growth habit, and miscellaneous morphological variations. Due to difficulties in classification, the o-HCA and β-glucosidase category and the dwarf category were unreliable for determining mutation rates. Based on the chlorophyll-deficient and miscellaneous morphological categories, mutation rates for HA, AP, and BU treatments did not differ from the control rates, but EMS at 0.003M and 0.004M …

Water-Soluble Factors In Melilotus Leaves Which Influence Feeding By The Sweetclover Weevil, W. R. Akeson, Francis A. Haskins, Herman J. Gorz, G. R. Manglitz Sep 1968

Water-Soluble Factors In Melilotus Leaves Which Influence Feeding By The Sweetclover Weevil, W. R. Akeson, Francis A. Haskins, Herman J. Gorz, G. R. Manglitz

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

One factor which stimulates feeding and two factors which deter feeding by the adult sweetclover weevil have been separated by preparative paper chromatography of hot water extracts of Melilotus leaves. The factors were detected with a bioassay which measures feeding by adult weevils on sweetclover root disks impregnated with the extract or fraction being tested. A feeding stimulant (Stimulant A) and a feeding deterrent (Deterrent A) were found in both the resistant species, M. infesta, and a susceptible species, M. officinalis, in approximately equal amounts. A second feeding deterrent (Deterrent B) was found only in extracts from M. …
