Metagenomic Analysis Of Root-Associated Microbiome Of Healthy And Taproot Decline-Affected Soybeans And Identification Of Healthy Soybean Root Endophytes With Protective Activity Against The Causal Agent, Xylaria Necrophora, Uyen Wesser

Theses and Dissertations

Plant roots are associated with a diverse microbial community of bacteria and fungi. The root microbiome communities associate with the root surface or penetrate the superficial layers of root tissues. It is of high agronomic interest to characterize root microbiomes and identify microbes with beneficial effects on plant defense against pathogens. Soybean taproot decline (TRD) is an emerging soil-borne disease caused by a fungus classified as Xylaria necrophora, challenging to control and with devastating effects on yield. Our group has initiated a study of the soybean root microbiome with three primary experiments: (I) perform a comparative study of root …

Characterization And Management Of Auxin-Resistant Palmer Amaranth In Tennessee, Delaney C. Foster Dec 2022

Characterization And Management Of Auxin-Resistant Palmer Amaranth In Tennessee, Delaney C. Foster

Doctoral Dissertations

Palmer amaranth has a long history of evolving resistance to herbicides to the point it has become a significant row crop production obstacle. Cotton and soybean growers were offered new technologies in 2016, expanding in-crop herbicide options to include dicamba or 2,4-D. Within three years of commercialization, dicamba use in these crops increased ten-fold and growers began to report Palmer amaranth escapes in west Tennessee auxin-tolerant production systems. A survey of Palmer amaranth escapes in dicamba and 2,4-D-tolerant cotton and soybean fields in Tennessee was conducted in the fall of 2021 with the objective of determining if poor control was …

Functional Analysis Of Soybean Proteinase Inhibitor Genes And Cyst Nematode-Inducible Synthetic Promoters For Insects And Nematode-Resistance In Plants, Mst Shamira Sultana Dec 2022

Functional Analysis Of Soybean Proteinase Inhibitor Genes And Cyst Nematode-Inducible Synthetic Promoters For Insects And Nematode-Resistance In Plants, Mst Shamira Sultana

Doctoral Dissertations

Proteinase inhibitors (PIs) from legumes have the potential for use as protectants in response to pests and pathogens. Soybean (Glycine max) contains two trypsin inhibitors (TIs): Kunitz trypsin inhibitor (KTI) and Bowman-Birk inhibitor (BBI). In this study, the possible role of soybean TIs in plant defense against insects and nematodes was investigated. In addition to the three known TIs (KTI1, KTI2 and KTI3), novel inhibitors KTI5, KTI7, and BBI5 were identified in soybean. Their functional role was further examined by overexpression in soybean and Arabidopsis. In vitro enzyme inhibitory assays showed significant increase in trypsin and chymotrypsin inhibitory …

Evaluation Of Agronomic Performance And Weed Control In Soybean Grown With Different Row Configurations, Planting Dates, And Soil Textures, Franklin Read Kelly May 2022

Evaluation Of Agronomic Performance And Weed Control In Soybean Grown With Different Row Configurations, Planting Dates, And Soil Textures, Franklin Read Kelly

Theses and Dissertations

Planting date, seeding rate, soil texture, and row configuration are important factors in soybean production. Each of these factors can impact overall production and yield of soybean immensely. Growers can have difficulty making decisions about how to best manage their production systems with these factors in mind. Therefore, research was conducted from 2019 to 2021 at the Delta Research and Extension Center in Stoneville, MS, to evaluate the agronomic performance, yield components, and weed control of soybean planted with different planting dates, row configurations, soil textures and/or seeding rates. Common row configurations utilized in Mississippi soybean production were compared to …

Root Phenotyping Of Peptide-Treated Glycine Max, Salem Jackson May 2022

Root Phenotyping Of Peptide-Treated Glycine Max, Salem Jackson

Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses

Plant elicitor peptides (Peps) – endogenous chains of amino acids involved in natural plant defense – have been shown to decrease damage from herbivores and pathogens by inducing an immune response, increasing the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCS), transcripts, and metabolites. Exogenous treatment of soybean seeds with plant elicitor peptide GmPep3 has been shown to induce these broad-spectrum defenses and offers a new method for increasing crop yield. However, the effects of GmPep3 on indicators of soybean health – root characteristics, growth stages, etc. – have not been fully realized.

Using the root-phenotyping platform RhizoVision Explorer, several root traits …

Breeding Soybean [Glycine Max (L) Merr.] Under Reduced Irrigation, Francia Seconde Ravelombola May 2022

Breeding Soybean [Glycine Max (L) Merr.] Under Reduced Irrigation, Francia Seconde Ravelombola

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Soybean [Glycine max (L) Merr.], a legume species native to East Asia in the Fabaceae family, ranks among the most important food crops in the world. It is widely grown and known for its high protein and oil concentration. Soybean is valuable because its seeds have multiple applications in food, feed, pharmaceutical, and industrial enterprises. Even though seed yield is the most important trait, breeders have recently given a significant attention to quality traits, such as high protein or modified oil concentration. Soybean seed protein inheritance has been extensively studied; however, genetics of high-protein ‘BARC-7’ soybean are still unknown. On the …

Re-Evaluation Of Late Season Action Thresholds And The Effect Of Seed Treatments On Early Season Colonization Of Threecornered Alfalfa Hopper, Spissistilus Festinus (Say), In Louisiana Soybean, Glycine Max (L) Merr, Tyler Ray Tagle Musgrove Apr 2022

Re-Evaluation Of Late Season Action Thresholds And The Effect Of Seed Treatments On Early Season Colonization Of Threecornered Alfalfa Hopper, Spissistilus Festinus (Say), In Louisiana Soybean, Glycine Max (L) Merr, Tyler Ray Tagle Musgrove

LSU Master's Theses

Soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr, is considered the most economically important oil and feed crop in the US and is grown on nearly 35,000,000 ha on an annual basis. Factors that limit yield include weed pressure, disease infection, and of particular interest to entomologists, insect herbivory. Soybean is targeted by a range of above and below ground pests which are primarily controlled by insecticides. Neonicotinoids are a recently popularized insecticide class that when applied as a seed treatment, can provide protection from early season pests. The most economically significant early season pest is threecornered alfalfa hopper, Spissistilus festinus (Say), whose …
