Carbon And Other Low-Z Materials Under Extreme Conditions, Jonathan T. Willman
Carbon And Other Low-Z Materials Under Extreme Conditions, Jonathan T. Willman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This work is focused on understanding material's behavior and response to extreme conditions. Under extreme conditions, which is categorized as regions of high pressures and temperatures in (P-T) space, materials can undergo multiple types of phase transitions as well as exhibit substantial damage as well as other exotic behaviors. By studying matter at these extreme conditions, we can elucidate a broad range of fundamental physics including a material's energetic, mechanical, and electronic responses. This thesis describes work that makes contributions to the growing body of knowledge within these subsets of condensed matter physics. In the first thrust, crystal structure prediction …
Preparation And Characterization Of Van Der Waals Heterostructures, Horacio Coy Diaz
Preparation And Characterization Of Van Der Waals Heterostructures, Horacio Coy Diaz
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation different van der Waals heterostructures such as graphene-MoS2 and MoTe2-MoS2 were prepared and characterized. In the first heterostructure, polycrystalline graphene was synthesized by chemical vapor deposition and transferred on top of MoS2 single crystal. In the second heterostructure, MoTe2 monolayers were deposited on MoS2 by molecular beam epitaxy.
Characterization of graphene-MoS2 heterostructures was conducted by spin and angle resolve spectroscopy which showed that the electronic structure of the bulk MoS2 and graphene in this van der Waals heterostructures is modified. For MoS2 underneath the graphene, a band …
Structure-Interaction Effects In Novel Nanostructured Materials, Nam B. Le
Structure-Interaction Effects In Novel Nanostructured Materials, Nam B. Le
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Recent advances in experimental and computational methods have opened up new directions in graphene fundamental studies. In addition to understanding the basic properties of this material and its quasi-one dimensional structures, significant efforts are devoted to describing their long ranged dispersive interactions. Other two-dimensional materials, such as silicene, germanene, and transition metal dichalcogenides, are also being investigated aiming at finding complementary to graphene systems with other "wonder" properties. The focus of this work is to utilize first principles simulations methods to build our basic knowledge of structure-interaction relations in two-dimensional materials and design their properties. In particular, mechanical folding and …
Graphene Casimir Interactions And Some Possible Applications, Anh Duc Phan
Graphene Casimir Interactions And Some Possible Applications, Anh Duc Phan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Scientific development requires profound understandings of micromechanical and nanomechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS) due to their applications not only in the technological world, but also for scientific understanding. At the micro- or nano-scale, when two objects are brought close together, the existence of stiction or adhesion is inevitable and plays an important role in the behavior operation of these systems. Such effects are due to surface dispersion forces, such as the van der Waals or Casimir interactions. The scientific understanding of these forces is particularly important for low-dimensional materials. In addition, the discovery of materials, such as graphitic systems has provided opportunities …
Development Of Interatomic Potentials For Large Scale Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of Carbon Materials Under Extreme Conditions, Romain Perriot
Development Of Interatomic Potentials For Large Scale Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of Carbon Materials Under Extreme Conditions, Romain Perriot
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this PhD research project is to devise a robust interatomic potential for large scale molecular dynamics simulations of carbon materials under extreme conditions. This screened-environment dependent reactive empirical bond order potential (SED-REBO) is specifically designed to describe carbon materials under extreme compressive or tensile stresses. Based on the original REBO potential by Brenner and co workers, SED-REBO includes reparametrized pairwise interaction terms and a new screening term, which serves the role of a variable cutoff. The SED-REBO potential overcomes the deficiencies found with the most commonly used interatomic potentials for carbon: the appearance of artificial forces due …
