Design, Synthesis, And Characterization Of Complex Chalcogenides For Energy Storage And Energy Conversion Applications, Srikanth Balijapelly Jan 2024

Design, Synthesis, And Characterization Of Complex Chalcogenides For Energy Storage And Energy Conversion Applications, Srikanth Balijapelly

Doctoral Dissertations

"Through this investigation, complex chalcogenides with the combination of main group metals, transition metals, and rare earth metals have been synthesized using the building block approach and their structure-property relationships are evaluated. The main emphasis of research is on rationally designing new materials for applications in sodium and lithium ion conducting solid electrolytes, cathodes, thermoelectrics, and nonlinear optics. Along with the experimental studies, theoretical calculations are also employed to better understand the physicochemical properties of the synthesized compounds.

The first part of the research will discuss designing alkali ion containing complex chalcogenides using the building block approach. This investigation resulted …

Solution Combustion Synthesis And Characterization Of Fumarolic Mineral Dolerophanite, Copper (Ii) Oxide Sulfate, Eric J. Cyganowski Jan 2024

Solution Combustion Synthesis And Characterization Of Fumarolic Mineral Dolerophanite, Copper (Ii) Oxide Sulfate, Eric J. Cyganowski

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses

Dolerophanite Cu2OSO4 is a rare mineral found almost exclusively in the fumaroles of volcano systems and is sensitive to temperature and humidity conditions. It has a monoclinic C2/m crystal structure characterized by two-dimensional layers composed of sulfate anions dispersed amongst copper (II) oxide backbones. There has been recent interest in dolerophanite due to the magnetic properties of its Kagome-like lattice as well as its potential use as a photocatalyst or Li-ion battery electrode. Literature on the material however has been limited by the available synthesis strategies. As such, this thesis work presents a novel strategy …

Expanding On The Solid State Chemistry Of F-Element Chalcogenides, Logan Skyler Breton Jul 2023

Expanding On The Solid State Chemistry Of F-Element Chalcogenides, Logan Skyler Breton

Theses and Dissertations

An overarching goal in solid state chemistry is to achieve predictability regarding the synthesis of compounds with desired properties. While this goal is far from being reached, solid state chemists are hard at work synthesizing and characterizing new materials to further our understanding of structure-property relationships, and to expand our fundamental knowledge to rationalize the outcomes of solid-state syntheses. With the advent of new solid state synthetic methods, novel compounds exhibiting exciting properties are still being discovered today. The infancy of these synthetic methods promises a myriad of undiscovered compounds with potentially interesting properties which has resulted in a recent …

Oxygen Deficient Perovskites: Effect Of Structure On Electrical Conductivity, Magnetism And Electrocatalytic Activity., Ram Krishna Hona Dec 2019

Oxygen Deficient Perovskites: Effect Of Structure On Electrical Conductivity, Magnetism And Electrocatalytic Activity., Ram Krishna Hona

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present thesis deals with the synthesis and study of the physico-chemical properties of perovskite based oxide materials. Several novel oxygen deficient perovskites (ODP) have been synthesized by conventional solid state synthesis method. The novel compounds are CaSrFe2O6-δ, CaSrFeCoO6-δ, Ca2Fe1.5Ga0.5O5, CaSrFeGaO5 and BaSrFe2O5. Their magnetic, charge transport and electrocatalytic properties have been studied. Structural effect on electrical conductivity, magnetic and electrocatalytic properties have been studied in some series of ODPs. CaSrFe2O6-δ, CaSrFeCoO6-δ, Ca2Fe …

I have observed unique variations in AC electrical conductivity of solids by dielectric analysis (DEA or DETA) when studied with respect to temperature and frequency. A wide range of solids were examined for this study e.g. organics, polymers, carbohydrates, API's (active pharmacy ingredients) and amino acids. Experimental results clearly show novel dielectric behavior of a linear increase in a log ionic conductivity vs. temperature in the pre-melt (20 to 30oC below the melt temperature) and melt transition regions. We have differentiated the solids which show the conductivity variations in pre-melt from those which do not e.g. pre-melt conductivity variations observed …

In light of the increasing importance of solid state chemistry, an experiment dealing with at least some aspects of this rapidly expanding area should he included in advanced chemistry laboratories. Herein is described one of the experiments that we have developed to meet this need. This experiment was designed for a senior level integrated chemistry lab taken by all our chemistry majors. Normally six to eight hours are needed to complete this experiment. This experiment deals with the synthesis and characterization of a perovskite. Perovskites were chosen because compounds with this structure are important in solid state technology, and since …
