Nutrient limitation in aquatic ecosystems results from a deficiency in nitrogen or phosphorus levels relative to cellular growth needs. Nutrient limitation of freshwater systems is a function of biotic and abiotic factors. Biotic factors include vascular and nonvascular plant community composition. Abiotic factors include underlying bedrock and land-use activities (e.g. agriculture, septic systems). Nutrient availability directly affects growth, productivity, and community structure of primary producers. The purpose of this project is to identify emerging pollutants of concern in wastewater and drinking water and the challenges associated with their discovery. The most frequently detected contaminants taking the spotlight included pharmacueticals, personal care products, and endocrine disprupting chemicals at ultra trace levels.

This paper represents a master's project that is a preliminary surface soil survey of the Lytle Creek sub-Watershed, near Devore, California. The sub-Watershed is a recreational site within the San Bernardino National Forest. This study was undertaken to determine the concentration of lead and lead salts within the soils and sediments within the watershed, and to determine if these products pose a threat to the health of the local environment and human consumers from the watershed. Possible sources of lead contamination include natural background geology, contamination of historical use of gasoline with lead additives, and the presence of outdoor shooting …

In the fall of 2010, the Piscataqua Region Estuaries Partnership (PREP) completed an 18-month effort to understand current and future environmental issues affecting the Region’s estuaries, to establish realistic goals and objectives for the next 10 years, and to create effective action plans to systematically achieve the shared environmental goals of a broad base of Regional stakeholders.

With input from more than 150 individuals, representing 82 organizations, PREP compiled the 2010 Piscataqua Region Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) that lays the foundation for work over the next decade to protect and restore the Region’s estuaries and associated watersheds
