State-Selective Studies Of T→R, V Energy Transfer: The H+Co System, G. K. Chawla, George C. Mcbane, P. L. Houston, G. C. Schatz

Peer Reviewed Articles

Collisional energy transfer from H atoms to CO(v=0, J≈2) has been studied at a collision energy of 1.58±0.07 eV by photolyzing H2S at 222 nm in a nozzle expansion with CO and probing the CO(v", J") levels using tunable VUV laser-induced fluorescence. The ratio CO(v"=1)/CO(v"=0) is found to be 0.1±0.008. The rotational distribution of CO(v"=0) peaks at J"gradually; population is still observed at J">45. The rotational distribution of CO(v"=1) is broad and peaks near J"=20. The experimental results are compared to …

Even after thirty five yaara of planned economic develogment a large fraction of people in India cannot afford to have the basic necessities Like food, clothing and shelter. To quote from the Econonic Survey [1984-85), Buoyant agricultural parformance thus far has dependad mainly upon production gains in wheat and rice. Performance with raspect to other critical crops, such as pulser and oilseeds, and dryland farning generally, remains veak. The rate of growth of industry, although somewhat higher than in the ten years preceding the sixth Plan, remains low... population continues to grow at about 2 percent per year. At this …

Sy-Hwang Liou Publications

Measurements of the transport critical-current density (Jc), magnetization Jc, and magnetoresistance in a number of bulk sintered samples of Y1Ba2Cu3O χ from several different laboratories indicate that the transport Jc is limited by weak-link regions between high Jc regions. The weak-link Jc has a Josephson character, decreasing by two orders of magnitude as the magnetic field is increased from 0.1 to 10 mT at 77 K. An examination of the grain-boundary region in Y1Ba2Cu3O χ shows no observable impurities or …

Theory Of The Observations Made Of High-Order Rainbows From A Single Water Droplet, James A. Lock Dec 1987

Theory Of The Observations Made Of High-Order Rainbows From A Single Water Droplet, James A. Lock

Physics Faculty Publications

Over a dozen rainbows have been observed in a single water droplet. They appear as glare spots on the water droplet which take on coloration at the appropriate rainbow angles. The appearance of rainbows as colored glare spots in this situation is understood in terms of the caustics created in the vicinity of the droplet by the refracting light rays. The angular positions of the glare spots are understood in terms of the Fourier transform of the geometric scattering amplitude. The rainbow glare spots are also found to appear numerically in the Fourier transform of the Mie scattered fields. An …

Oyster Spatfall In Virginia Rivers: 1987 Annual Summary, James Whitcomb

Reports

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) conducts weekly surveys from June through early October to obtain oyster spatfall information. Spat counts are made on oyster shells strung on wire and suspended from stakes on public and private beds. The number of spat on shells is counted each week of the spawning season to determine the potential of a particular area for receiving a strike and to predict the most likely period the strikes will occur.

Multilist And Inverted File System Performance Measurements, Ashok Chandramouli, George Winston Zobrist

Computer Science Technical Reports

This study evaluates the multilist and inverted file systems. It describes the structure of the two file system and then proceeds to investigate the performance. The performance is based on quantitative estimates of space requirements for file system, time to retrieve records, time to insert a record, time to delete a record, time to update a record and time to exhaustively read and reorganize the file system. The study then investigates specific situations in which one file system seems to perform better than the other.

Heuristic Coloring Algorithm For The Composite Graph Coloring Problem, Johnnie C. Roberts, Billy E. Gillett Dec 1987

Heuristic Coloring Algorithm For The Composite Graph Coloring Problem, Johnnie C. Roberts, Billy E. Gillett

Computer Science Technical Reports

A composite graph is a finite undirected graph in which a positive integer known as a chromaticity is associated with each vertex of the graph. The composite graph coloring problem (CGCP) is the problem of finding the chromatic number of a composite graph, i.e., the minimum number of colors (positive integers) required to assign a sequence of consecutive colors to each vertex of the graph in a manner such that adjacent vertices are not assigned sequences with colors in common and the sequence assigned to a vertex has the number of colors indicated by the chromaticity of the vertex. The …

Boron-Bearing Kornerupine From Fiskenaesset, West Greenland: A Reexamination Of Specimens From The Type Locality, Edward S. Grew, Richard K. Herd, Nicholas Marquez

Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

In 1884, Lorenzen proposed the formula MgAI2SiO6 for his new mineral kornerupine from Fiskenæsset and did not suspect it to contain boron. Lacroix and de Gramont (1919) reported boron in Fiskenæsset kornerupine, while Herd (1973) found none. New analyses (ion microprobe mass analyser and spectrophotometric) of kornerupine in three specimens from the type locality, including the specimens analysed by Lorenzen and Herd, indicate the presence of boron in all three, in amounts ranging from 0.50 to 1.44 wt.% B203, e.g. (Li0.04 Na0.01 Ca0.01) (Mg3.49 Mn0.01 Fe0.17 …

Nutrient Losses From Conventional And No-Till Cornfields, Robert L. Blevins, Wilbur Frye Dec 1987

Nutrient Losses From Conventional And No-Till Cornfields, Robert L. Blevins, Wilbur Frye

Soil Science News and Views

Farmers must be concerned about both the monetary loss and the threat of groundwater and surface water pollution associated with the loss of plant nutrients from their fields. There is also an increasing public concern about pollution and the role of agriculture in nonpoint-source pollution. Movement of water over the surface of the soil as well as through the soil profile increases the potential for loss of water-soluble nutrients, especially nitrates.

Comment On ‘‘Relations Between Microscopic And Macroscopic Lowest-Order Optical Nonlinearities Of Molecular Crystals With One- Or Two-Dimensional Units’’, K.M. White, Craig J. Eckhardt

Craig J. Eckhardt Publications

An algebraic error in an earlier paper [J. Zyss and J. L. Oudar, Phys. Rev. A 26, 2028 (1982)] led to an interpretation regarding the desirable polarizability characteristics of a molecule for second-harmonic generation in crystals which is opposite to that actually desired. Optimum response is obtained from crystals comprised of molecules with significant in-plane polarizabilities.

Magnetically Induced Circular Polarization, K.L. Stricklett, D.J. Burns, Paul Burrow Dec 1987

Magnetically Induced Circular Polarization, K.L. Stricklett, D.J. Burns, Paul Burrow

Paul Burrow Publications

Helium atoms excited to an aligned (1s3d) 3D state are produced by electron impact parallel to a magnetic field. The initial alignment of the atomic state evolves into an orientation with finite angular momentum along the magnetic field direction and thus gives rise to a circularly polarized component in the (1s3d) 3D→(1s2p) 3P radiation propagating parallel to the magnetic field. Circular-polarization fractions of a few percent are observed, in general agreement with theory. The measured polarization fraction is found to be pressure dependent, indicating that secondary excitation and cascade processes must be included for a complete description.

Ion-Ion Recombination In Mixtures Of Methane And Sulphur Hexafluoride, M. C. Cornell, Ian M. Littlewood

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The authors have measured the recombination rate for positive and negative ions in Sulphur hexafluoride and in mixtures of methane and Sulphur hexafluoride in an electron beam sustained discharge. Measurements were made as a function of gas composition, gas pressure in the range 100 to 600 Torr, and reduced electric field strength in the range 12 to 150 Td. When plotted as a function of an effective ion temperature, defined by the drift velocities of the ions in the applied electric field, the rates in each of the gas mixtures follow the same Teff-1.6 power law. From comparisons with theories …

Electrooptic And Piezoelectric Measurements In Photorefractive Barium Titanate And Strontium Barium Niobate, Stephen Ducharme, Jack Feinberg, R.R. Neurgaonkar

Stephen Ducharme Publications

We have measured the low-frequency ("unclamped") electrooptic and piezoelectric coefficients in undoped BaTiO3and SrxBa1-xNb2O6 (x = 0.61) crystals using interferometric techniques. The contribution of the piezoelectric effect to the Pockels measurements is discussed. For an applied ac electric field in the range 0.1-200 V/cm, the electrooptic and piezoelectric effects are linear in the magnitude of the applied field and independent of its frequency in the range 10 Hz-100 kHz. The unclamped electrooptic coefficients of poled BaTiO3 single crystals are r13= 19.5 pm ±1 pm/V and r33 = …

Depth Profiles And Soil Textures Of The Vernal Pools Of The Santa Rosa Plateau Preserve, Riverside County, California, Ralph Charles Workman Jr.

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this project was to study the edaphic and topographic characteristics of the 13 vernal pools on the Santa Rosa Plateau Preserve, thus documenting the role soil texture plays in vernal pool formation.

Several field and laboratory procedures were used to demonstrate that there is a higher percentage of clay present within vernal pools than in soils outside the margin of the pools, for 11 out of the 13 pools. Statistical tests showed that the percentage of clay was highly significant within the center soil of the pool as compared to the soil outside the margin of the …
