Groundwater In The Wheatbelt, E P. O'Driscoll
Groundwater In The Wheatbelt, E P. O'Driscoll
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
In general six factors affect the occurence of groundwater; rainfall, topography, rock type, rock structurs, vegetation, and local evaporation.
Variation in even one of these can affect the potential yield of a bore or well, the groundwater salinity, and even whether any groundwater occurs at all.

A Proof Of Convergence For The Tridiagonal Ql Algorithm In Floating-Point Arithmetic, James George Sanderson
A Proof Of Convergence For The Tridiagonal Ql Algorithm In Floating-Point Arithmetic, James George Sanderson
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Numerous routines are available to find the eigenvalues of a real symmetric tridiagonal matrix. Since it is known to converge in exact arithmetic, the tridiagonal QL algorithm with origin shift is widely used. Here we analyze the algorithm in floating-point arithmetic. This analysis suggests two modifications to the EISPACK implementation TQLl that enable one to prove correctness and hence convergence of the routine.
Also, it is known that the implicit and explicit versions of the QL algorithm produce the same results in exact arithmetic. A counter-example to the floating-point analog of this theorem is presented.

Past Levels And Present State Of Northern Victoria Land Glaciers, Paul Andrew Mayewski
Past Levels And Present State Of Northern Victoria Land Glaciers, Paul Andrew Mayewski
Earth Science Faculty Scholarship
Before 1973, movement of the Ross Ice Shelf had been measured near the Transantarctic Mountains (Swithinbank, 1963), near Ross Island (Stuart and Heine, 1961) and near the ice front and to the south of Roosevelt Island (Dorrer et at., 1969). Robin (1975), assuming steady state, extrapolated these data across the ice shelf by applying volume conservation principles to measured ice thickness profiles of the ice shelf.

Weathering Stages Of A Tholeiitic Basalt (Dolerite), Queen Maud Mountains, Paul Andrew Mayewski
Earth Science Faculty Scholarship
The sparsity of datable material and key horizons throughout most of the Transantarctic Mountains requires that much of the mapping and correlation of glacial deposits, especially moraines, be based primarily on qualitative techniques. One qualitative method is to characterize the degree of weathering of clasts covering these deposits (Behling, 1971; Calkin, 1971; Nichols, 1971; and Mayewski, 1975). Lacking, however, is a detailed understanding of the role and method of weathering. To help solve this problem, soil studies have been made by Claridge and Campbell (1968) in the Shackleton Glacier region and Everett and Behling (1968), Linkletter (1972), Behling (1971), and …

Model Fe(Iii) Porphyrin Systems: Axial Ligation In Oxidized Cytochrome P-450.S, G. C. Papaefthymiou, Richard B. Frankel, S. Foner, S. C. Tang, S. Koch, R. H. Holm
Physics
In an effort to develop useful experimental criteria to distinguish among the viable axial ligation possibilities of O, N, and S coordination in oxidized cytochrome P-450. S (substrate-bound, high-spin), syntheticmodel compounds with O-(Fe(PPIXDME) (OEt) and Fe(PPIXDME) (OC6H4NO2)) and S-(Fe(PPIXDME) (S6H4NO2) and Fe(OEP) (SPh)) donor axial ligands were prepared and studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy. Ferric hemoglobin and myoglobin were used as model compounds with N-axial coordination. The isomer shifts (δ) and quadrupole splittings (ΔEQ) observed are typical of high-spin Fe(III) porphyrins and are comparable with results …

Synthetic Analogs Of The Active Sites Of Oxidized And Reduced Rubredoxin, Richard B. Frankel, G. C. Papaefthymiou, R. W. Lane, R. H. Holm
Physics
The bischelate monoanion [Fe((SCH2)2C6H4)2]1- contains an unconstrained, near-tetrahedral Fe(III)-S4 coordination unit (similar to the Fe-S4 coordinationunit occurring in rubredoxin proteins) and exhibits the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox couple. Mossbauer parameters at 77 K are isomer shift δ = 0.13 mm/s (relative to iron metal) and electric quadrupole splitting ΔEQ = 0.57 mm/s. Application of an external magnetic field parallel to the direction of observation at 4.2 K induces a saturation magnetic hyperfine field of - 380 kOe. Upon reduction to the dianion [Fe((SCH2)2C …

Experiments On The Attenuation Of Third Sound In Saturated Superfluid Helium Films, Robert Hallock, K. L. Telschow, R. K. Galkiewicz
Robert Hallock
Upper limits of the attenuation of third sound in saturated superfluid 4He films have been measured in three separate experiments. Our observations at frequencies from 0.1 to 200 Hz indicate that the attenuation in these thick films is substantially lower than would be inferred from the only previous experiment done on saturated films. We observe the third-sound velocity to have the temperature dependence predicted by Bergman.

Review Of Quantum States Of Atoms, Molecules And Solids, M. Eugene Rudd
M. Eugene Rudd Publications
The subjects of atomic, molecular and solid-state physics have only rarely been treated at an advanced level in a single volume. The notable exception, of course, is John C. Slater’s Quantum Theory of Matter. In the present book the three authors, Michael Morrison, Thomas Estle and Neal Lane, stress the unity among these fields by ernphasizing the concept of electronic quantum states in atoms, diatomic molecules and crystalline solids. Such a combination should be of basic interest to students in a variety of scientific fields and also form the basis for more advanced work in those three subjects themselves. …
Ultraviolet Stimulated Thermoluminescent Response Characteristics Of Aluminum Oxide, Edward Ryan Iii
Ultraviolet Stimulated Thermoluminescent Response Characteristics Of Aluminum Oxide, Edward Ryan Iii
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This investigation has demonstrated that some aluminum oxide crystals have high sensitivity and are well suited for detecting and measuring ultraviolet radiation rates significantly less than .01 µW/cm2.
The thermoluminescent glow curve, linearity of response, and fading of the crystals were determined. An action spectrum was performed to determine the relative sensitivities of several crystals in a range of wavelengths from 230 nm to 546 nm.
The sensitivity of the crystals was found to decrease as a function of exposure. \n explanation for the decrease in sensitivity due to the presence of high temperature traps is presented.

Leaf Epidermal Transmittance Of Ultraviolet Radiation And Its Implication For Plant Sensitivity To Ultraviolet-Radiation Injury, Ronald Robberecht
Leaf Epidermal Transmittance Of Ultraviolet Radiation And Its Implication For Plant Sensitivity To Ultraviolet-Radiation Injury, Ronald Robberecht
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Leaf epidermal transmittance of ultraviolet radiation (280-400 nm) was examined in several plant species to determine the capability of the epidermis to attenuate solar ultraviolet radiation. Epidermal samples were mechanically isolated and examined with a spectroradiometer/integrating sphere for transmittance. A survey of 25 species exposed to natural insolation was conducted. Although the species differed in life form, habitat type, and epidermal characteristics, epidermal transmittance was generally less than 10%. Ultraviolet radiation was attenuated 95 to 99% in more than half of the species. In 16 species, flavonoid and related pigments in the epidermis accounted for 20 to 57% of the …

Petrology Of The Rockport Quarry Limestone (Middle Devonian Traverse Group) Alpena, Presque Isle And Montmorency Counties, Michigan, Charles Willard Cookman
Masters Theses
The basal unit of the dominantly carbonate Traverse Group, the Bell Shale, is gradationally overlain by the Rockport Quarry Limestone which has a thickness of approximately 14 m. The Rockport Quarry Limestone is composed of a dark unrestricted marine subtidal organic-mud packstone facies, comprised of an algal-mat-bearing coral packstone subfacies and a shallower water crinoid-bryozoan grainstone subfacies; a shoal forming stromatoporoid biolithite facies; and a lagoonal micrite facies comprised of a subtidal dense subfacies containing gastropods, ostracods, and calcispheres, and an Intertidal to supratidal fenestral subfacies. The local facies tract reconstructed for the Rockport Quarry Limestone is interpreted to be …

The Effects Of Ultrasonic Vibration, Tension And Torsion On The Charge Acceptance Of The Alkaline Silver Electrode ; Ii. Potentiostatic Studies Of The Oxide Growth Rate Law For The Alkaline Silver Electrode ; Iii. The Determination Of Ionic Transport In Silver Oxide Using Radiotracer Techniques With Ag[Superscript 110m], Reed Harold Chase
Theses and Dissertations
The effect of ultrasonic vibration on the anodic oxidation of silver foil in KOH was studied. An increase in charging capacity of approximately 20% was found to be the result of cavitation erosion. Silver wire was exposed to tension and torsion during oxidation but no change in charge acceptance was caused by these stresses. The oxide growth rate on silver foil electrodes was compared to rate equations that have been proposed for other metals. Uhlig's equations for the growth of semiconductor oxides was found to describe most of the data. The data did not fit other rate equations. Determination of …

Voltammetric And Electrochemical Kinetic Studies Of The Halides And Halogens At A Platinum Rotating Ring-Disk Electrode In Anhydrous Acetic Acid, Donald Harrison Cranney
Voltammetric And Electrochemical Kinetic Studies Of The Halides And Halogens At A Platinum Rotating Ring-Disk Electrode In Anhydrous Acetic Acid, Donald Harrison Cranney
Theses and Dissertations
The electrochemical behavior of the iodine-iodide couple was investigated in both basic and neutral acetic acid solutions at a platinum rotating ring-disk electrode. Voltammetric curves were obtained and discussed. Various kinetic parameters were determined and by comparing to theoretical kinetic parameters a probable reaction mechanism was deduced. The mechanism that best fit experimental results is the following I- + S = I(S) + e- I(S) + I- = I2 + S + e (slow). The electrochemical behavior of bromine, bromide, and chloride was also investigated in the same media. Voltammetric curves were recorded and discussed with emphasis on the hysteresis …
Energy Dependence Of Amorphizing Implant Dose In Silicon, John R. Dennis, Edward Boyd Hale
Energy Dependence Of Amorphizing Implant Dose In Silicon, John R. Dennis, Edward Boyd Hale
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The radiation-induced transformation from crystalline to amorphous silicon was studied using ion implantation. The ion energy was varied from 20 to 180 keV for Li+, N+, Ne+, Ar+, and Kr +. The energy dependence of the critical amorphizing dose was determined by electron spin resonance. Comparison of the data with theoretical calculations of the energy density deposited into atomic processes showed good agreement. This energy-dependent agreement gave evidence that energy density is important to the transformation at both low and high implantation temperatures.

A Study Of Selected Photo Fries Rearrangements, Elwood Lloyd Loveridge
Theses and Dissertations
The Fries rearrangement of phenyl esters is reviewed and compared to the reaction when light is the source of energy. The products are different due to different mechanism of reaction. Light energy causes either free radical or concerted reactions. The S-phenylthiol esters and anilides were studied also. Although many of the rearrangements are the same, we did not see any alkyl migration nor decarboxylation type reactions with either the sulfur or nitrogen compounds. Three papers have been published from this work: Bradshaw, J. S., Knudsen, R. D. and Loveridge, E. L., J. Org. Chem., 35, 1219 (1970); Bradshaw, J. S., …
