Enhancing The Teaching And Learning Of Computational Estimation In Year 6, Paula Mildenhall Jan 2011

Enhancing The Teaching And Learning Of Computational Estimation In Year 6, Paula Mildenhall

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

There have been repeated calls for computational estimation to have a more prominent position in mathematics teaching and learning but there is still little evidence that quality time is being spent on this topic. Estimating numerical quantities is a useful skill for people to be able to use in their everyday lives in order to meet their personal needs. It is also accepted that number sense is an important component of mathematics learning (McIntosh, Reys, Reys, Bana, & Farrell, 1997; Paterson, 2004) and that computational estimation is an important part of number sense (Edwards, 1984; Markovits & Sowder, 1988; Schoen, …

Wavelet-Based Simulation Of Geological Variables, T. T. Tran Jan 2003

Wavelet-Based Simulation Of Geological Variables, T. T. Tran

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis introduces a number of conditional simulation algorithms using wavelet bases. These make use of two orthogonal wavelet bases, the Haar and the Db2 bases. Firstly, two single-level algorithms are introduced, HSIM: with the Haar basis and DB2SIM with the Db2 basis. HSIM reproduces the histogram and semivariogram model of isotropic samples but not the semivariogrnm model of anisotropic samples. DB2SIM reproduces the histogram and semivariogram model in both the isotropic and anisotropic cases but, because of the conditioning method employed, is not as computationally efficient as we would wish. Because of the limitations of HSIM and Db2SIM two …

Depth-First Search Embedded Wavelet Algorithm For Hardware Implementation, Li-Minn Ang Jan 2001

Depth-First Search Embedded Wavelet Algorithm For Hardware Implementation, Li-Minn Ang

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The emerging technology of image communication over wireless transmission channels requires several new challenges to be simultaneously met at the algorithm and architecture levels. At the algorithm level, desirable features include high coding performance, bit stream scalability, robustness to transmission errors and suitability for content-based coding schemes. At the architecture level, we require efficient architectures for construction of portable devices with small size and low power consumption. An important question is to ask if a single coding algorithm can be designed to meet the diverse requirements. Recently, researchers working on improving different features have converged on a set of coding …

Calibration Of A Conceptual Rainfall-Runoff Model Using Simulated Annealing, Neil R. Sumner Jan 1995

Calibration Of A Conceptual Rainfall-Runoff Model Using Simulated Annealing, Neil R. Sumner

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Simulated annealing (Kirkpatrick et al, 1983) is used to estimate the parameters of a mathematical model that predicts the water yield from a catchment. The calibration problem involves finding the global minimum of a multivariate function that has many extraneous local minima, a situation in which conventional optimisation methods are ineffective. The objective function which quantifies discrepancies between the computed and observed streamflows must be carefully selected to satisfy the least square assumptions. Several published simulated annealing algorithms have been implemented, tested and evaluated using standard test functions. Appropriate cooling schedules are found for each algorithm and test function investigated. …
