Application Of Distributed Fiber-Optic Sensing For Pressure Predictions And Multiphase Flow Characterization, Gerald Kelechi Ekechukwu
Application Of Distributed Fiber-Optic Sensing For Pressure Predictions And Multiphase Flow Characterization, Gerald Kelechi Ekechukwu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In the oil and gas industry, distributed fiber optics sensing (DFOS) has the potential to revolutionize well and reservoir surveillance applications. Using fiber optic sensors is becoming increasingly common because of its chemically passive and non-magnetic interference properties, the possibility of flexible installations that could be behind the casing, on the tubing, or run on wireline, as well as the potential for densely distributed measurements along the entire length of the fiber. The main objectives of my research are to develop and demonstrate novel signal processing and machine learning computational techniques and workflows on DFOS data for a variety of …
Estimation Of Economic Risk From Coastal Natural Hazards In Louisiana, Rubayet Bin Mostafiz
Estimation Of Economic Risk From Coastal Natural Hazards In Louisiana, Rubayet Bin Mostafiz
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Louisiana, U.S.A., is among the most vulnerable areas globally to coastal natural hazards, with risk vulnerability likely increasing. The risks associated with non-tropical-cyclone hazards in Louisiana’s coastal zone have been understudied. This research enhances present and future (i.e., 2050) Louisiana risk assessment using locally-weighted, model-based hazard frequency/intensity and population projections.
Results suggest that property risks associated with extreme cold temperature and tornado are and will remain costlier than those for hail and lightning. Property risks of extreme cold temperature and hail are projected to decrease with the expected warming temperatures, with those of all four of these hazards peaking in …

Sers Platform For Single Fiber Endoscopic Probes, Debsmita Biswas
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Molecular detection techniques have huge potential in clinical environments. In addition to many other molecular detection techniques, endoscopic Raman spectroscopy has great ability in terms of minimal invasiveness and real-time spectra acquisition. However, Raman Effect is low in sensitivity, limiting the application. Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS), addresses this limitation. SERS brings rough nano-metallic surfaces in contact with specimen molecules which enormously enhances Raman signals. This provides Raman spectroscopy with immense capabilities for diverse fields of applications.
Generally, in clinical probe applications, the spectrometer is brought near the target molecules for detection. Typically, optical fibers are used to couple spectrometers to …
Compilation Optimizations To Enhance Resilience Of Big Data Programs And Quantum Processors, Travis D. Lecompte
Compilation Optimizations To Enhance Resilience Of Big Data Programs And Quantum Processors, Travis D. Lecompte
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Modern computers can experience a variety of transient errors due to the surrounding environment, known as soft faults. Although the frequency of these faults is low enough to not be noticeable on personal computers, they become a considerable concern during large-scale distributed computations or systems in more vulnerable environments like satellites. These faults occur as a bit flip of some value in a register, operation, or memory during execution. They surface as either program crashes, hangs, or silent data corruption (SDC), each of which can waste time, money, and resources. Hardware methods, such as shielding or error correcting memory (ECM), …
Polymer Mimetics For Soil Modeling And Detection Of Biomarkers, Md Ragib Hasan
Polymer Mimetics For Soil Modeling And Detection Of Biomarkers, Md Ragib Hasan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The population of the world is increasing day by day and is expected to reach 9.8 billion by the year 2050. The ever-increasing demand for agricultural products is putting an unprecedented strain on the world's soils as the human population continues to expand. Soil degradation caused by over-farming and the agrochemicals (fertilizers, pesticides, etc.) used in agriculture is a growing problem, although its causes remain murky. In addition, little is understood about the molecular-level interactions of substances that are subsequently introduced to soils, such as agricultural chemicals (ACs). Therefore, it is expected that these constraints may be circumvented by the …
Hydrogeologic Investigation Of A Covered Karst Terrain, Joseph Peter Honings
Hydrogeologic Investigation Of A Covered Karst Terrain, Joseph Peter Honings
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Increasing demand for water for agricultural use within the Dougherty Plain of the Southeastern United States has depleted surface water bodies. In karstic landscapes, such as the Dougherty Plain in southwest Georgia where the linkages between surface and ground waters are close, there is a need to understand the physical characteristics of the subsurface that allow these close linkages. Having a better understanding of the subsurface characteristics will aid numerical modeling efforts that underpin policy decisions and economic analyses. Two common features on this karstic landscape are draws and geographically isolated wetlands. Using LiDAR, aerial imagery, and ground-penetrating radar, this …
A Cluster Structure On The Coordinate Ring Of Partial Flag Varieties, Fayadh Kadhem
A Cluster Structure On The Coordinate Ring Of Partial Flag Varieties, Fayadh Kadhem
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The main goal of this dissertation is to show that the (multi-homogeneous) coordinate ring of a partial flag variety C[G/P_K^−] contains a cluster algebra for every semisimple complex algebraic group G. We use derivation properties and a canonical lifting map to prove that the cluster algebra structure A of the coordinate ring C[N_K] of a Schubert cell constructed by Goodearl and Yakimov can be lifted, in an explicit way, to a cluster structure \hat{A} living in the coordinate ring of the corresponding partial flag variety. Then we use a minimality condition to prove that the cluster algebra \hat{A} is equal …
Controlling Electro-Magnetic Functionality Of Ruthenates By Heterostructure Design, Zeeshan Ali
Controlling Electro-Magnetic Functionality Of Ruthenates By Heterostructure Design, Zeeshan Ali
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Perovskite oxides (ABO3) show wide range of functionalities originating from interplay of structural, spin, charge, and orbital degrees of freedoms. The bulk perovskite structure could be controlled via conventional chemical substitution, though exploiting heterostructure engineering novel ground states could be observed which otherwise are absent in bulk. In this thesis, the interest is to explore the electro-magnetic phenomena as complex oxides are confined in heterostructures.
I first investigate electromagnetic properties of ultrathin epitaxial ruthenate: SrRuO3 (SRO); spatially confined between SrTiO3 (STO) i.e., STO5-SROn-STO5 with n = 1- and 2-unit cells. It …

Understanding Consumers' Use Experience On Electrically Heated Jacket: A Study On Online Review Using Topic Modeling, Md Nakib-Ul Hasan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The demand for heated jackets is anticipated to be fuelled by frequent temperature drops, severe winter weather, and increasing outdoor activities. Electrically heated jackets (EHJ) are primarily marketed through online distribution channels and expansion of online sales channels is expected to boost the global market. Consumers are increasingly relying on online reviews from other consumers to help them decide what to buy. Businesses also actively monitor and manage their online reviews to build trust in their brand and make it more likely that customers will buy. Traditional approaches for assessing customer behavior, such as market research surveys and focus groups, …

Computational Imaging For Shape Understanding, Yuqi Ding
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Geometry is the essential property of real-world scenes. Understanding the shape of the object is critical to many computer vision applications. In this dissertation, we explore using computational imaging approaches to recover the geometry of real-world scenes. Computational imaging is an emerging technique that uses the co-designs of image hardware and computational software to expand the capacity of traditional cameras. To tackle face recognition in the uncontrolled environment, we study 2D color image and 3D shape to deal with body movement and self-occlusion. Especially, we use multiple RGB-D cameras to fuse the varying pose and register the front face in …
Scheduling Many-Task Computing Applications For A Hybrid Cloud, Shifat Perveen Mithila
Scheduling Many-Task Computing Applications For A Hybrid Cloud, Shifat Perveen Mithila
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
A centralized scheduler can become a bottleneck for placing the tasks of a many-task application on heterogeneous cloud resources. Previously, it was demonstrated that a decentralized vector scheduling approach based on performance measurements can be used successfully for this task placement scenario. In this dissertation, we extend this approach to task placement based on latency measurements. Each node collects performance metrics from its neighbors on an overlay graph, measures the communication latency, and then makes local decisions on where to move tasks. We present a decentralized and a centralized algorithm for configuring the overlay graph based on latency measurements and …

Development Of 1,2-Cis-Selective Glycosylation Protocols And Multistep Synthesis Of Glycans From Acinetobacter Baumannii., Dancan Kamau Njeri
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Access to various oligosaccharides has been made possible by glycosylation reactions. This is mainly through chemical synthesis and enzymatic approaches. Herein, I talk about glycosylation through chemical synthesis. In general, glycosylation reactions lead to a mixture of 1,2-cis and 1,2-trans stereoisomers. Stereoselective access to 1,2-trans isomer is highly developed; it efficiently relies on neighboring group participation. However, efficient access to 1,2-cis selective glycosylation is still a work in progress. In Chapter 1, I highlight notable efforts developed so far that address the 1,2-cis selectivity challenge in glycosylation.
In Chapter 2, I demonstrate how I improved …

Experimental Investigation Of The Physical Properties Of Irmsnn (M = 1, 3 And N = 2, 4, 7), Smita Speer
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Exploration of transition metal stannides, formed from a combination of transition metals (T) and Sn, has resulted in the discovery a variety of materials with interesting physical properties, which is in part due to the complexity of interactions that can occur between the T-d orbitals and Sn-p orbitals. There have been observations of (extremely) large magnetoresistance [1-4], topological flat and nearly flat bands [5-7], superconducting behavior in 2D and 3D systems [5, 8-11], ultrahigh carrier mobility [12-13], and more attributed to d-p orbital mixing in such systems. This dissertation will address the effects of T-Sn interactions …
Commutative C*-Algebras Generated By Toeplitz Operators On The Fock Space, Vishwa Nirmika Dewage
Commutative C*-Algebras Generated By Toeplitz Operators On The Fock Space, Vishwa Nirmika Dewage
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The Fock space $\mathcal{F}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ is the space of holomorphic functions on $\mathbb{C}^n$ that are square-integrable with respect to the Gaussian measure on $\mathbb{C}^n$. This space plays an essential role in several subfields of analysis and representation theory. In particular, it has for a long time been a model to study Toeplitz operators. Grudsky and Vasilevski showed in 2002 that radial Toeplitz operators on $\mathcal{F}(\mathbb{C})$ generate a commutative $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{T}^G$, while Esmeral and Maximenko showed that $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{T}^G$ is isometrically isomorphic to the $C^*$-algebra $C_{b,u}(\mathbb{N}_0,\rho_1)$. In this thesis, we extend the result to $k$-quasi-radial symbols acting on the Fock space $\mathcal{F}(\mathbb{C}^n)$. …
On A Relation Between Ado And Links-Gould Invariants, Nurdin Takenov
On A Relation Between Ado And Links-Gould Invariants, Nurdin Takenov
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this thesis we consider two knot invariants: Akutsu-Deguchi-Ohtsuki(ADO) invariant and Links-Gould invariant. They both are based on Reshetikhin-Turaev construction and as such share a lot of similarities. Moreover, they are both related to the Alexander polynomial and may be considered generalizations of it. By experimentation we found that for many knots, the third order ADO invariant is a specialization of the Links-Gould invariant. The main result of the thesis is a proof of this relation for a large class of knots, specifically closures of braids with five strands.

Several reports state that it is crucial to analyze nanoscale semiconductor materials and devices with potential benefits to meet the need for next-generation nanoelectronics, bio, and nanosensors. The progress in the electronics field is as significant now, with modern technology constantly evolving and a greater focus on more efficient robust optoelectronic applications. This dissertation focuses on the study and examination of the practicality of Electrophoretic Deposition (EPD) of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) for use in semiconductor applications.
The feasibility of several synthesized electrolytes, with and without surfactants and APTES surface functionalization, is discussed. The primary objective of this study …
Surpassing The Standard Quantum Limit Using An Optical Spring, Torrey Cullen
Surpassing The Standard Quantum Limit Using An Optical Spring, Torrey Cullen
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In 1916, Albert Einstein predicted the existence of gravitational waves based on his new theory of general relativity. He predicted an accelerating mass with a non-zero quadrupole moment would emit energy in the form of gravitational waves. Often referred to as ripples in space-time, gravitational waves are extremely small by the time reach Earth, potentially having traveled hundreds of megaparsecs. It is common for these ripples in space-time to stretch and squeeze matter 1000 times smaller than the width of a proton.
Laser interferometer observatories were first built in the 1990s in the US and Europe, and as sensitivity improvements …
Breeding Ecology Of Mottled Ducks In Southwestern Louisiana, Elizabeth Sophia Bonczek
Breeding Ecology Of Mottled Ducks In Southwestern Louisiana, Elizabeth Sophia Bonczek
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Mottled ducks are a resident species found in the southern United States that rely on coastal marsh and associated habitat to fulfill the needs of the entirety of their annual cycle. Population monitoring has revealed declines in western Gulf Coast (WGC) mottled ducks since 2008. Mottled duck populations are influenced by survival and recruitment, and changes in these factors may contribute to population declines. The overarching goal of this project was to identify the mechanisms potentially limiting WGC mottled ducks.
I captured adult female mottled ducks during molt on Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge and adjacent lands in southwestern Louisiana from 2017–2019. …
Optimizing The Performance Of Parallel And Concurrent Applications Based On Asynchronous Many-Task Runtimes, Weile Wei
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Nowadays, High-performance Computing (HPC) scientific applications often face per- formance challenges when running on heterogeneous supercomputers, so do scalability, portability, and efficiency issues. For years, supercomputer architectures have been rapidly changing and becoming more complex, and this challenge will become even more com- plicated as we enter the exascale era, where computers will exceed one quintillion cal- culations per second. Software adaption and optimization are needed to address these challenges. Asynchronous many-task (AMT) systems show promise against the exascale challenge as they combine advantages of multi-core architectures with light-weight threads, asynchronous executions, smart scheduling, and portability across diverse architectures.

Bloch Spectra For High Contrast Elastic Media, Jayasinghage Ruchira Nirmali Perera
Bloch Spectra For High Contrast Elastic Media, Jayasinghage Ruchira Nirmali Perera
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The primary goal of this dissertation is to develop analytic representation formulas and power series to describe the band structure inside periodic elastic crystals made from high contrast inclusions. We use source free modes associated with structural spectra to represent the solution operator of the Lame' system inside phononic crystals. Then we obtain convergent power series for the Bloch wave spectrum using the representation formulas. An explicit bound on the convergence radius is given through the structural spectra of the inclusion array and the Dirichlet spectra of the inclusions. Sufficient conditions for the separation of spectral branches of the dispersion …
From Equal-Mass To Extreme-Mass-Ratio Binary Inspirals: Simulation Tools For Next Generation Gravitational Wave Detectors, Samuel Douglas Cupp
From Equal-Mass To Extreme-Mass-Ratio Binary Inspirals: Simulation Tools For Next Generation Gravitational Wave Detectors, Samuel Douglas Cupp
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Current numerical codes can successfully evolve similar-mass binary black holes systems, and these numerical waveforms contributed to the success of the LIGO Collaboration's detection of gravitational waves. LIGO requires high resolution numerical waveforms for detection and parameter estimation of the source. Great effort was expended over several decades to produce the numerical methods used today. However, future detectors will require further improvements to numerical techniques to take full advantage of their detection capabilities. For example, the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will require higher resolution simulations of similar-mass-ratio systems than LIGO. LISA will also be able to detect extreme-mass-ratio inspiral …
Ligers Interferometric Survey Of M Dwarf Diameters, Tyler Gregory Ellis
Ligers Interferometric Survey Of M Dwarf Diameters, Tyler Gregory Ellis
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation, I present the largest single collection of M dwarf stellar radii in over a decade and contextualize these measurements with the systematic model discrepancies. The measurements of stellar angular diameters are also important in the quantification of the properties of exoplanets. In order to estimate the property of the exoplanet, it is first necessary to quantify the properties of the planet's host star. Using the survey results complemented with previous direct observations of the angular diameters of low mass stars, I develop updated updated surface brightness relationships. These relationships allow predictions of angular diameters using easy to …
Efficient Low Dimensional Representation Of Vector Gaussian Distributions, Md Mahmudul Hasan
Efficient Low Dimensional Representation Of Vector Gaussian Distributions, Md Mahmudul Hasan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation seeks to find optimal graphical tree model for low dimensional representation of vector Gaussian distributions. For a special case we assumed that the population co-variance matrix $\Sigma_x$ has an additional latent graphical constraint, namely, a latent star topology. We have found the Constrained Minimum Determinant Factor Analysis (CMDFA) and Constrained Minimum Trace Factor Analysis (CMTFA) decompositions of this special $\Sigma_x$ in connection with the operational meanings of the respective solutions. Characterizing the CMDFA solution of special $\Sigma_x$, according to the second interpretation of Wyner's common information, is equivalent to solving the source coding problem of finding the minimum …

New Synthetic Reactions Enabled By Protected Oxyallyl And Amidoallyl Cations, Binod Nepal
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation entails design and development of two new synthetic methodologies made possible through the generation of cationic species, namely oxyallyl and amidoallyl cations. Chapter 1 involves literature survey on generation and trapping of oxyallyl cations. Mostly known for cycloaddition reactions with these elusive species, the most recent approach of direct nucleophilic capture of oxyallyl cations are discussed. Apt design of substrates and reaction conditions by Kartika Group to access a-electrophilic carbon towards the synthesis of a variety of value-added compounds, i.e., 1,4- and 1,6-dicarbonyls, carbazoles, densely substituted pyrroles and furans are elaborated.
Chapter 2 focuses on our discovery of …

Tuning Properties Of Topological Insulators: An Ab-Initio Approach, Karunya Shailesh Shirali
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This thesis develops a first-principles based approach to explore the tuning of topological properties of the tetradymite topological insulators. We begin by setting up a framework to systematically obtain the bulk and surface properties of topological insulators, treating the structural and electronic properties on an equal footing. We determine a consistent method for including the van der Waals interactions, which are responsible for the weak coupling between sets of atomic layers in this family of layered materials, which is important in obtaining accurate structural properties. We obtain close agreement with experimental values for both the bulk and surface states.

Anticipating Stochastic Integrals And Related Linear Stochastic Differential Equations, Sudip Sinha
Anticipating Stochastic Integrals And Related Linear Stochastic Differential Equations, Sudip Sinha
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Itô’s stochastic calculus revolutionized the field of stochastic analysis and has found numerous applications in a wide variety of disciplines. Itô’s theory, even though quite general, cannot handle anticipating stochastic processes as integrands. There have been considerable efforts within the mathematical community to extend Itô’s calculus to account for anticipation. The Ayed–Kuo integral — introduced in 2008 — is one of the most recent developments. It is arguably the most accessible among the theories extending Itô’s calculus — relying solely on probabilistic methods. In this dissertation, we look at the recent advances in this area, highlighting our contributions. First, we …
Practical Considerations And Applications For Autonomous Robot Swarms, Rory Alan Hector
Practical Considerations And Applications For Autonomous Robot Swarms, Rory Alan Hector
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In recent years, the study of autonomous entities such as unmanned vehicles has begun to revolutionize both military and civilian devices. One important research focus of autonomous entities has been coordination problems for autonomous robot swarms. Traditionally, robot models are used for algorithms that account for the minimum specifications needed to operate the swarm. However, these theoretical models also gloss over important practical details. Some of these details, such as time, have been considered before (as epochs of execution). In this dissertation, we examine these details in the context of several problems and introduce new performance measures to capture practical …
A New Perspective On A Polynomial Time Knot Polynomial, Robert John Quarles
A New Perspective On A Polynomial Time Knot Polynomial, Robert John Quarles
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this work we consider the Z1(K) polynomial time knot polynomial defined and
described by Dror Bar-Natan and Roland van der Veen in their 2018 paper ”A polynomial time knot polynomial”. We first look at some of the basic properties of Z1(K), and develop an invariant of diagrams Ψm(D) related to this polynomial. We use this invariant as a model to prove how Z1(K) acts under the connected sum operation. We then discuss the effect of mirroring the knot on Z1(K), and described a geometric interpretation of some of the building blocks of the invariant. We then use these to …

General Stochastic Calculus And Applications, Pujan Shrestha
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In 1942, K. Itô published his pioneering paper on stochastic integration with respect to Brownian motion. This work led to the framework for Itô calculus. Note that, Itô calculus is limited in working with knowledge from the future. There have been many generalizations of the stochastic integral in being able to do so. In 2008, W. Ayed and H.-H. Kuo introduced a new stochastic integral by splitting the integrand into the adaptive part and the counterpart called instantly independent. In this doctoral work, we conduct deeper research into the Ayed–Kuo stochastic integral and corresponding anticipating stochastic calculus.
