The study of Lie groups has yielded a rich catalogue of mathematical spaces that, in some sense, provide a theoretical and computational framework for describing the “world in which we live.” In particular, these topological groups that represent the rigid motions of a space, the behavior of subatomic particles, and the shape of the expanding universe consist of specialized matrices. In what follows, we define a new collection of matrices with a very specific transposition relation and attempt to classify this Lie group algebraically, geometrically, and topologically. In 2011, the West Virginia Abandoned Mine Lands and Reclamation Program (WVAML) implemented a watershed-scale restoration project in Three Fork Creek, a 103 square-mile watershed in rural West Virginia impaired by acid mine drainage (AMD). This was accomplished through the installation of four in-stream lime dosers in 2011. Due to the great capital investment in the restoration of Three Fork Creek and an interest in applying this watershed-scale approach to other watersheds throughout West Virginia, it is of great interest to demonstrate the successes of this remediation. Preclinical behavioral neuroscience often uses choice paradigms to capture psychiatric symptoms. In particular, the subfield of operant research produces nested datasets with many discrete choices in a session. The standard analytic practice is to aggregate choice into a continuous variable and analyze using ANOVA or linear regression. However, choice data often have multiple interdependent outcomes of interest, violating an assumption of general linear models. The surface-bulk partitioning of small organic molecules in aqueous droplets was investigated using molecular dynamics. The air-particle interface was modeled using a 80-Å cubic water box containing series of organic molecules and surrounded by gaseous OH radicals. The properties of the organic solutes within the interface and the water-bulk were examined at a molecular-level using density profiles and radial pair distribution functions. Molecules containing only polar functional groups such as urea and glucose are found predominantly in the water bulk, forming an exclusion layer near the water surface. A thorough study of photoluminescent molecules involving the pyridine polypyrrole(ide) ligand platform has been conducted. A detailed analysis on speciation of the proligand H2(MesPDPPh) (H2MesPDPPh = 2,6-bis(5-mesityl-3-phenyl-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)-pyridine) and its dilithium salt Li2(MesPDPPh) revealed temperature- and solvent-dependent effects. These molecules, along with the hydrochloric acid adduct [H3(MesPDPPh)]Cl were found to exhibit short-lived photoluminescence in both tetrahydrofuran and benzene solution. For these types of networks, we study how the capacity for multiple positive equilibria and multiple positive nondegenerate equilibria can be determined using Euclidian embedded graphs. These networks of chemical oscillators are created using catalytic Ru(bpy)32+ loaded cation exchange beads submerged in catalyst-free Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) solutions. Various network structures are created by utilizing the photosensitive nature of the Ru(bpy) 32+ catalyst. The response of the oscillators due to light stimuli can be characterized by constructing a phase response curve (PRC). Cutting-edge plasma experiments continue to push the frontiers of plasma science. Two such groups of experiments, helicon sources and laboratory magnetic reconnection, are the focus of this thesis. The relatively high plasma density achieved for modest input powers makes helicon source plasmas ideal testbeds for fusion-relevant phenomena without the complexities associated with fusion devices. Examples include plasma-material interaction (PMI) studies, divertor region studies, and boundary physics studies. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are millisecond-duration, bright radio transients of extragalactic origin. The Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) telescope’s CHIME/FRB instrument and other radio telescopes across the globe have detected hundreds of FRBs. Their origins are a mystery. Precise localization within the host is critical to distinguish between progenitor models. This can be achieved through Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI). Until now, VLBI localizations have only been carried out in targeted follow-up observations of some repeating sources which comprise a small fraction of the FRBs.

Thermokarst lakes within Arctic deltas store flood waters and filter solutes and sediments, thus moderating the impact of flood water discharge to arctic seas. Blood glucose monitoring is a key process in the prevention and management of certain chronic diseases, such as diabetes.
