Local Feature Selection For Multiple Instance Learning With Applications., Aliasghar Shahrjooihaghighi Dec 2021

Local Feature Selection For Multiple Instance Learning With Applications., Aliasghar Shahrjooihaghighi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Feature selection is a data processing approach that has been successfully and effectively used in developing machine learning algorithms for various applications. It has been proven to effectively reduce the dimensionality of the data and increase the accuracy and interpretability of machine learning algorithms. Conventional feature selection algorithms assume that there is an optimal global subset of features for the whole sample space. Thus, only one global subset of relevant features is learned. An alternative approach is based on the concept of Local Feature Selection (LFS), where each training sample can have its own subset of relevant features. Multiple Instance …

Towards Long Term Colloid Suspension In A Vertically Rotated System., Md Mahmudur Rahman Dec 2021

Towards Long Term Colloid Suspension In A Vertically Rotated System., Md Mahmudur Rahman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Within a colloidal suspension gravity may compromise the observation of governing physical interactions, especially those that are weak and/or take significant time to develop. Conducting the experiment in a long-term microgravity environment is a viable option to negate gravitational effects, though significant resources are required to do so. While it may not be possible to simulate long-term microgravity terrestrially, particles can resist quick sedimentation in a confined suspension system rotating vertically with appropriate rotation speed. The goal of the investigation is to demonstrate the existence of long-term particle suspension regime for a certain colloidal suspension while characterizing colloidal behavior due …

Ultrafast Magnetic Entropy Dynamics With Time-Resolved Pump-Probe Magneto-Optical Technique., Sahar Goharshenasanesfahani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It has been observed that ultrathin films, multilayers, or magnetic nanostructures indicate novel magnetic phenomena that differ profoundly from the respective bulk properties. Besides, because of the broad applications of these magnetic materials in the industry, they are an exciting research area. Hence, investigating the low-dimensional magnetic systems is one of the most active fields in experimental condensed matter physics. Magnetization dynamics can occur over a wide range of time scales (from seconds to femtoseconds). Some of these processes even occur on time scales as short as a few picoseconds (10-12s) or femtoseconds (10-15s). Measurement of …

First Principle Studies Of The Effects Of Alkali-Metal Intercalation On Structural Transition From Black To Blue Phosphorene And The Adsorption Of N2h4 On Ws2 Layers., Md Rajib Khan Musa Dec 2021

First Principle Studies Of The Effects Of Alkali-Metal Intercalation On Structural Transition From Black To Blue Phosphorene And The Adsorption Of N2h4 On Ws2 Layers., Md Rajib Khan Musa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A comprehensive density functional theory calculation has been conducted to seek a potential structural transition from black to blue phosphorene layers, with a focus on the roles played by alkali-metal intercalation in black phosphorene/phosphorus. This study reveals that at sufficiently high Li concentration and specific, well-defined configurations, a phase transition from black to blue phosphorene can take place. The Li atoms intercalated in black phosphorene could act as a “catalyst” in the“reactive region” of the lone pair of P atoms, leading to a P-P bond breaking and, subsequently, a local structural transformation from an orthorhombic lattice to an assembly of …

Estimating Treatment Effect On Medical Cost And Examining Medical Cost Trajectory Using Splines And Change Point Techniques., Indranil Ghosh Dec 2021

Estimating Treatment Effect On Medical Cost And Examining Medical Cost Trajectory Using Splines And Change Point Techniques., Indranil Ghosh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the world of growing medical needs, other than the clinical outcomes, the cost of healthcare is one of the important aspects to evaluate. The cost of treatment could act as a decisive factor on which one to choose from two equally likely effective treatment options. In literature, the most used quantity for the cost of treatment is cumulative lifetime cost since the diagnosis of a disease. While it provides a bird' eye view of the treatment cost, it fails to capture the underlying pattern of the treatment cost trajectory. We developed a marginal structural functional model (MSFM) using an …

A Remote Sensing Perspective: Mapping The Human Footprint In The Zambezi Region Of Namibia., Ariel E Weaver Dec 2021

A Remote Sensing Perspective: Mapping The Human Footprint In The Zambezi Region Of Namibia., Ariel E Weaver

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The “human footprint” can be used as a general proxy to estimate human activities across the landscape. The human footprint in the Zambezi Region of Namibia is critically important for regional management of conservation efforts and land use planning. The land covers in the Zambezi Region are characteristically difficult to separate spectrally, due to a highly heterogeneous savanna landscape. Object Based Image Analysis (OBIA) and Random Forest (RF) methods are notable for their ability to improve classification accuracies of remotely sensed imagery. In this study, I investigate the extent of the human footprint in the Zambezi Region of Namibia, using …

Decisive Neutrality, Restricted Decisive Neutrality, And Split Decisive Neutrality On Median Semilattices And Median Graphs., Ulf Högnäs Dec 2021

Decisive Neutrality, Restricted Decisive Neutrality, And Split Decisive Neutrality On Median Semilattices And Median Graphs., Ulf Högnäs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Consensus functions on finite median semilattices and finite median graphs are studied from an axiomatic point of view. We start with a new axiomatic characterization of majority rule on a large class of median semilattices we call sufficient. A key axiom in this result is the restricted decisive neutrality condition. This condition is a restricted version of the more well-known axiom of decisive neutrality given in [4]. Our theorem is an extension of the main result given in [7]. Another main result is a complete characterization of the class of consensus on a finite median semilattice that satisfies the axioms …

Theoretical Investigation Of The Co-C Bond Activation In Methylcobalamin And Adenosylcobalamin-Dependent Systems: Mechanistic Insights., Arghya Pratim Ghosh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The vitamin B12 derivates, otherwise known as cobalamin (Cbl), are ubiquitous organometallic cofactors. The biologically active forms of Cbl, such as methylcobalamin (MeCbl) and adenosylcobalamin (AdoCbl), act as cofactors in different physiological reactions for both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. A crucial aspect of the Cbl-mediated systems is the activation of the organometallic Co-C bond that plays a critical role in its catalytic activity. One of the most remarkable features of this Co-C bond is its unusual activation in AdoCbl-dependent enzymatic reactions, where a trillion-fold rate acceleration of the Co-C bond cleavage is observed inside the enzyme compared to the isolated …

Synthesis, Crystal Structure And Ionic Conductivity Of Ruddlesden-Popper Oxide Materials: Effects Of Ionic Radii And Defects On Lithium-Ionic Conductivity., Selorm Joy Fanah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Layered perovskite oxides of the Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) type structure can be good lithium-ion conductors for solid electrolyte applications in all-solid-state batteries, due to the large gap separating octahedral layers which can be useful pathways for Li-ion conduction. However, little work has been done on their lithium-ion transport properties in these materials despite their interesting structural properties. This work highlights the synthesis and study of the ionic conductivities in a series of n = 2 and 3 Ruddlesden-Popper oxides, as part of an ongoing investigation in search of alternative solid electrolyte materials. Several different strategies were employed for the enhancement of …

Elastin is one of the most hydrophobic proteins, and it is extremely flexible when hydrated. The driving force for recoil is the decrease in entropy of the protein and/or the hydrating solvent. This dissertation is a study of both mechanisms. Following an introduction (Chapter 1), Chapters 2 and 3 investigate the recoil mechanism on the molecular level in the hydrating solvent and in the protein, respectively. Chapter 4 examines macroscopic properties of recoil by thermomechanics. Conclusions are discussed in Chapter 5. Using double quantum NMR, the deuterated water ordering at the elastin surface was studied quantitatively as a function of …

Structural, Vibrational And Transport Properties Of Novel Complex Systems., Bhupendra Man Shing Karki

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Electron correlation effects in quantum materials are very strong. It is critical to investigate the structure of quantum materials to better understand and manipulate their physical properties. Quantum effects are prominent at the atomic microscopic length scale, which can not be examined by average long range structural measurements using traditional diffraction methods. Instead, pair distribution function (PDF) analysis, a local structure probe, can effectively unveil the mystery of local structure, which is more sensitive to local behavior than bulk average features. The first section of my dissertation will concentrate on the local structural study of the Iron oxy-chalcogenides, {\cSSe}, which …

High-Density Parking For Autonomous Vehicles., Parag J. Siddique Aug 2021

High-Density Parking For Autonomous Vehicles., Parag J. Siddique

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In a common parking lot, much of the space is devoted to lanes. Lanes must not be blocked for one simple reason: a blocked car might need to leave before the car that blocks it. However, the advent of autonomous vehicles gives us an opportunity to overcome this constraint, and to achieve a higher storage capacity of cars. Taking advantage of self-parking and intelligent communication systems of autonomous vehicles, we propose puzzle-based parking, a high-density design for a parking lot. We introduce a novel method of vehicle parking, which leads to maximum parking density. We then propose a heuristic method …

Micellar Nanocatalysis For Efficient Reactions., Uyen T Duong Aug 2021

Micellar Nanocatalysis For Efficient Reactions., Uyen T Duong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Water is considered a green, sustainable, and inexpensive solvent for organic synthesis. However, performing organic reactions in water is especially challenging due to the inherent insolubility of substrates and catalysts. Inspired from Nature, where chemistry happens in water, micellar catalysis has recently gained much attention, especially for applications in pharmaceutical industry. Aqueous micelles are generally formed by amphiphile`s self-aggregation, a particular class of molecules possessing both hydrophobic and hydrophilic components. The aqueous micelle contains a hydrophobic cavity, which allows the lipophilic substrates and catalyst to go inside micelles, allowing their much higher localized concentration that enhances the reaction rates and …

Synthesis, Characterization, And Catalytic Activity Of Functionalized Metal Bis(Thiosemicarbazones)., Caleb Aaron Calvary

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Bis-(thiosemicarbazones) are a class of ligands that have found a wide range of uses from electrocatalysts to medicinal and diagnostic reagents. These ligands contain a diimine backbone, N2S2 chelating core, and pendent amines. In order to further explore this class of ligands, the previously underreported transamination reaction, which exchanges one pendent amine group for another, was utilized to create several derivatives using aliphatic and aromatic amines. The transamination reaction is appealing alternative to making the desired thiosemicarbazide. Further appeals come from the fact that it is a one-pot reaction that gives highly pure products in good yields. …

Oriented External Electric Field (Oeef) Tuning Of Unsubstituted Azoheteroarene Photoswitching Performance., Irma Avdic

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses

Azoheteroarenes are relatively new photoswitchable compounds, where one of the phenyl rings of an azobenzene molecule is replaced by a heteroaromatic five-membered ring. Although few studies have been performed, recent findings on methylated azoheteroarenes show that these photoswitches have great potential in various optically addressable applications. Thermal stability of molecular switches is one of the primary factors considered in the design process. For the purposes of quick information transmission in materials science, the thermal (Z – E) relaxation process should be as short as possible. On the other hand, molecular memory storage devices prefer long Z - E relaxation times. …
