Social networking sites (SNS) provide major new opportunities for policy-makers (eGovernment) to engage with citizens (eSociety). The European Commission supported WeGov project is developing a software toolkit that allows policymakers to take full advantage of a wide range of existing and well established social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter, Bebo, WordPress etc.) to engage citizens in two-way dialogs as part of governance and policymaking processes. The tools will make it possible to detect, track and mine opinions and discussions on policy oriented topics and allow discussions to be seeded and stimulated through injection of policy discussion points into relevant communities in …

Health Benefits Of Increased Walking For Sedentary, Generally Healthy Older Adults: Using Longitudinal Data To Approximate An Intervention Trial, Paula Diehr Sep 2010

Health Benefits Of Increased Walking For Sedentary, Generally Healthy Older Adults: Using Longitudinal Data To Approximate An Intervention Trial, Paula Diehr

Paula Diehr

BACKGROUND: Older adults are often advised to walk more, but randomized trials have not conclusively established the benefits of walking in this age group. Typical analyses based on observational data may have biased results. Here, we propose a "limited-bias," more interpretable estimate of the health benefits to sedentary healthy older adults of walking more, using longitudinal data from the Cardiovascular Health Study. METHODS: The number of city blocks walked per week, collected annually, was classified as sedentary (<7 blocks per>week), somewhat active, or active (>or=28). Analysis was restricted to persons sedentary and healthy in the first 2 years. In Year …

An Essay On The Nature And Significance Of Deception And Telling Lies, Sudhanshu K. Mishra May 2010

An Essay On The Nature And Significance Of Deception And Telling Lies, Sudhanshu K. Mishra

Sudhanshu K Mishra

A lie is an expression at deviance with the truth known or honestly believed by someone with an intention to deceive others for certain purpose, social or personal. An ability to lie might be evolutionary in nature possibly to help in survival, since it is found in the non-human world also. In the biological perspective, each individual is at war against all others. Thus viewed, lies are the cardinal virtues for survival and, by implication, the carriers of evolution. In the human world, lying is morally blameworthy in a relatively un-obscure way. There may be cases of lying to which …

Wavelet-Based Functional Linear Mixed Models: An Application To Measurement Error–Corrected Distributed Lag Models, Elizabeth J. Malloy, Jeffrey S. Morris, Sara D. Adar, Helen Suh, Diane R. Gold, Brent A. Coull Jan 2010

Wavelet-Based Functional Linear Mixed Models: An Application To Measurement Error–Corrected Distributed Lag Models, Elizabeth J. Malloy, Jeffrey S. Morris, Sara D. Adar, Helen Suh, Diane R. Gold, Brent A. Coull

Frequently, exposure data are measured over time on a grid of discrete values that collectively define a functional observation. In many applications, researchers are interested in using these measurements as covariates to predict a scalar response in a regression setting, with interest focusing on the most biologically relevant time window of exposure. One example is in panel studies of the health effects of particulate matter (PM), where particle levels are measured over time. In such studies, there are many more values of the functional data than observations in the data set so that regularization of the corresponding functional regression coefficient …

Participation And Engagement In Sport: A Double Hurdle Approach For The United Kingdom, Babatunde Buraimo, Brad Humphreys, Rob Simmons Jan 2010

Participation And Engagement In Sport: A Double Hurdle Approach For The United Kingdom, Babatunde Buraimo, Brad Humphreys, Rob Simmons

Dr Babatunde Buraimo

This paper uses pooled cross-section data from four waves of the United Kingdom’s Taking Part Survey, 2005 to 2009, in order to investigate determinants of probability of participation and levels of engagement in sports. The two rival modelling approaches considered here are the double-hurdle approach and the Heckman sample selection model. The Heckman model proves to be deficient in several key respects. The double-hurdle approach offers more reliable estimates than the Heckman sample selection model, at least for this particular survey. The distinction is more than just statistical nuance as there are substantive differences in qualitative results from the two …

Assessing The Impact Of Geosciences Laboratories On Student Learning: Who Benefits From Introductory Labs, Karl Nelson, Kristin Huysken, Zoran Kilibarda Jan 2010

Assessing The Impact Of Geosciences Laboratories On Student Learning: Who Benefits From Introductory Labs, Karl Nelson, Kristin Huysken, Zoran Kilibarda

Zoran Kilibarda

Laboratories serve as an integral part of geoscience education at most colleges and universities. While anecdotal evidence supports the beneficial impact of laboratories on science class learning, little quantitative research backs this statement. This study compared classroom data from students who completed a geoscience laboratory in conjunction with an introductory-level lecture-based course to those who completed the lecture course only. Laboratory-enrolled students performed better in the lecture class, resulting in an increase of 5.5% in their final class score. Even after controlling for GPA, laboratory enrollment accounted for a statistically significant proportion of the variance. Nontraditional students (age 25 and …

Shoulder Surfing Resistance Using Penup Event And Neighbouring Connectivity Manipulation, Miss Laiha Mat Kiah Jan 2010

Shoulder Surfing Resistance Using Penup Event And Neighbouring Connectivity Manipulation, Miss Laiha Mat Kiah

Miss Laiha Mat Kiah

Picture-based password has been proposed as an alternative authentication method to replace text-based password. Ensuring the security of picture-based password is not a simple task as picture-based objects are a lot easier to access and remember and can thus be easily guessed. In particular, shoulder surfing attack still remains as the main security threat encountered by many picture-based password authentication schemes, especially in drawmetric authentication scheme. In this paper, a novel shoulder surfing resistance mechanism has been proposed and evaluated. The proposed mechanism utilises penup event and neighbouring connectivity manipulation into a revised Background Pass-Go scheme. From the evaluation result, …

Spline-Based Models For Predictiveness Curves, Debashis Ghosh, Michael Sabel Jan 2010

Spline-Based Models For Predictiveness Curves, Debashis Ghosh, Michael Sabel

Debashis Ghosh

A biomarker is dened to be a biological characteristic that is objectively measured and evaluated as an indicator of normal biologic processes, pathogenic processes, or pharmacologic responses to a therapeutic intervention. The use of biomarkers in cancer has been advocated for a variety of purposes, which include use as surrogate endpoints, early detection of disease, proxies for environmental exposure and risk prediction. We deal with the latter issue in this paper. Several authors have proposed use of the predictiveness curve for assessing the capacity of a biomarker for risk prediction. For most situations, it is reasonable to assume monotonicity of …
