A Study Of Continuous Pq Disturbance Levels In Mv/Lv Distribution Systems, Victor Gosbell, D Robinson Dec 2012

A Study Of Continuous Pq Disturbance Levels In Mv/Lv Distribution Systems, Victor Gosbell, D Robinson

Dr Duane Robinson

Distribution Network Service Providers need to be aware of the general variation of PQ disturbances across their network, from the sites as diverse as the MV bus bar of a zone substation, the end of a MV feeder, and at the near and far ends of LV mains. This paper develops an understanding of PQ variations across such a system from survey results correlated with approximate analysis used to assign a PQ disturbance ranking to each site. The work will concentrate on continuous PQ disturbances, defined as those due to load current effects, for example voltage deviations, unbalance, fluctuations and …

Flicker Transfer In Radial Power Systems, Sankika Tennakoon, Lakshal Perera, D A. Robinson, Sarath Perera

Dr Duane Robinson

Loads which exhibit continuous and rapid variations in their current can cause voltage fluctuations that are often referred to as flicker. One good example for such loads is arc furnaces which are usually fed by dedicated feeders from the high voltage busbars in transmission systems. The flicker generated from such loads will propagate to the upstream HV point of common coupling (PCC), and from there to the downstream through the transmission and sub transmission systems. This paper demonstrates how the generated flicker is propagated from the HV PCC to the downstream in radial networks exhibiting different levels of attenuation depending …

Allocating Harmonic Emission To Mv Customers In Long Feeder Systems, D A. Robinson, Victor J. Gosbell Dec 2012

Allocating Harmonic Emission To Mv Customers In Long Feeder Systems, D A. Robinson, Victor J. Gosbell

Dr Duane Robinson

Previous work has attempted to find satisfactory methods for the allocation of harmonic current emission MV subsystems containing long feeders. It has been proposed that best use of the network's harmonic absorption capacity is made if the allocated current varies with the inverse square root of the harmonic impedance at the point of connection. It has been shown that an exact solution following this principle requires an impracticably large amount of data. Here it is assumed that each feeder supplied from a given substation has its load distributed uniformly and continuously along it, giving equations requiring only a modest amount …

The Application Of Iec 61000-3-6 To Mv Systems In Australia, Victor J. Gosbell, D A. Robinson, Sarath Perera, Alex Baitch Dec 2012

The Application Of Iec 61000-3-6 To Mv Systems In Australia, Victor J. Gosbell, D A. Robinson, Sarath Perera, Alex Baitch

Dr Duane Robinson

IEC 61000-3-6 [1] comprises a number of stages and tests to determine harmonic emission allowances for customers connected to MV or HV networks. Of particular importance is the section concerning loads distributed along a feeder, each having a different fault level. Although a common situation, the treatment given in the IEC standard is poorly described, being largely illustrated by one atypical example. This allows simplifying assumptions to be made which are invalid in practical cases. This paper outlines a more general approach that is relatively easy to apply.

The Estimation Of Continuous Pq Disturbance Levels In Distribution Systems, Victor J. Gosbell, D A. Robinson Dec 2012

The Estimation Of Continuous Pq Disturbance Levels In Distribution Systems, Victor J. Gosbell, D A. Robinson

Dr Duane Robinson

A simple method is given for estimating the continuous PQ disturbance level at a site. It is based on determining a "Voltage Distortion Increment" (VDI) for each segment of the network and then adding the VDIs from a given site back to an upstream site where levels are taken to be zero. The VDI is conveniently expressible in the form of S(MVA) times length (km), where "length" correspond to the physical length in the case of MV overhead lines and an equivalent length for other components. The method is verified by a comparison with field survey data. The voltage distortion …

Harmonic Planning Levels For Australian Distribution Systems, Victor J. Gosbell, Victor W. Smith, D A. Robinson, W Miller

Dr Duane Robinson

A modelling technique is developed for determining the harmonic voltage distribution across a distribution system when there is an equitable distribution of harmonic emission. The harmonic voltages at the 132kV and 415V levels are fixed to values based on IEC Compatibility and Planning Levels and the intermediate voltages determined. Studies are made of six systems, typical of Australian distribution practice, to examine the effect of choice of voltage level and system parameters over the harmonic range of 2-40. Based on the study, harmonic Planning Levels are recommended for application to Australian distribution systems.

Harmonic Impact Of Photovoltaic Inverters On Low Voltage Distribution Systems, Ahmed Latheef, D A. Robinson, Victor J. Gosbell, Victor W. Smith

Dr Duane Robinson

The number of installations of photovoltaic solar panels and associated inverter systems within residential premises is increasing. As these systems incorporate a power electronics front end, they will have an influence on the quality of supply in regards to voltage harmonics. This paper investigates the harmonic impact on an LV distribution feeder due to the installation of residential type grid connected photovoltaic inverter systems. To undertake the study an aggregated current source model is proposed for the photovoltaic inverter systems based on measurement data from available literature and the relevant international standards. A typical LV distribution feeder including load arrangements …

Supporting Developers In Complex Systems Modelling, Antonio A. Lopez-Lorca, Ghassan Beydoun, Rodrigo Martinez-Bejar, Holly Tootell

Associate Professor Ghassan Beydoun

Development of complex systems often requires building a large number of models with many interconnections and dependencies among them. The success of a project can be compromised by cognitive overload or limits of developers, who might miss relationships between elements of the models. Developing Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) is a typical example of where this may occur. Despite of its potential, this technology has not yet been widely adopted by industry due to its complexity and frequent errors in modelling activities. These errors typically propagate to later phases of the MAS development lifecycle, becoming costlier to fix and then lowering the …

An Ontology-Based Approach For Expert And Knowledge Mining In Complex Multi-Agent Systems, Minjie Zhang, Xijin Tang, Quan Bai, Jifa Gu

Associate Professor Minjie Zhang

Complex problems require diverse expertise and multiple techniques to solve. In order to solve such problems, complex multi-agent systems include numbers of heterogeneous agents, which may include both of human experts and autonomous agents, to work together toward some complex problems. Most complex multi-agent systems are working in open domains. Due to heterogeneities and dynamic working environments, expertise and capabilities of agents might not be well estimated and presented in the system. Therefore, how to discover useful knowledge from human and autonomous experts, make more accurate estimation for experts' capabilities and to find out suitable expert(s) to solve incoming problems …

Methods To Evaluate Health Information Systems, Ping Yu, Hui Yu, Jeffrey Soar Dec 2012

Methods To Evaluate Health Information Systems, Ping Yu, Hui Yu, Jeffrey Soar

Dr Ping Yu

To ensure the introduction of a health information system (HIS) is on track and will bring in the ex-pected outcomes, it is essential to evaluate the critical success factors at every stage of the system introduction life cy-cle. Based on comprehensive literature research and personal experience of evaluating HIS, the author proposes a multi -method approach that incorporates both quantitative and qualitative research, conceptualized through the DeLone and McLean Information Systems Success Model. The advantage of this approach is not only identifying the factors impacting on implementation success, but also distinguishing the critical factors from the less important ones. Thus it …

A Multi-Method Approach To Evaluate Health Information Systems, Ping Yu Dec 2012

A Multi-Method Approach To Evaluate Health Information Systems, Ping Yu

Dr Ping Yu

Systematic evaluation of the introduction and impact of health information systems (HIS) is a challenging task. As the implementation is a dynamic process, with diverse issues emerge at various stages of system introduction, it is challenge to weigh the contribution of various factors and differentiate the critical ones. A conceptual framework will be helpful in guiding the evaluation effort; otherwise data collection may not be comprehensive and accurate. This may again lead to inadequate interpretation of the phenomena under study. Based on comprehensive literature research and own practice of evaluating health information systems, the author proposes a multimethod approach that …

Provably Secure Single Sign-On Scheme In Distributed Systems And Networks, Jiangshan Yu, Guilin Wang, Yi Mu Dec 2012

Provably Secure Single Sign-On Scheme In Distributed Systems And Networks, Jiangshan Yu, Guilin Wang, Yi Mu

Dr Guilin Wang

Distributed systems and networks have been adopted by telecommunications, remote educations, businesses, armies and governments. A widely applied technique for distributed systems and networks is the single sign-on (SSO) which enables a user to use a unitary secure credential (or token) to access multiple computers and systems where he/she has access permissions. However, most existing SSO schemes have not been formally proved to satisfy credential privacy and soundness of credential based authentication. To overcome this drawback, we formalise the security model of single sign-on scheme with authenticated key exchange. Specially, we point out the difference between soundness and credential privacy, …

Design Maintenance In Process Eco-Systems, Tri Kurniawan, Aditya Ghose, Hoa Dam, Lam-Son Le, Tiancheng Zhang Dec 2012

Design Maintenance In Process Eco-Systems, Tri Kurniawan, Aditya Ghose, Hoa Dam, Lam-Son Le, Tiancheng Zhang

Dr Hoa Dam

This paper addresses the problem of managing business process changes at the design level within a complex business process repository. We argue that a formal process eco-systems view can provide a particular useful solution to the problem in which their inter-process relationships can be properly described. Our intent is to build a modular infrastructure to support change management in process eco-systems by leveraging a change propagation approach that would maintain the inter-process relationships. This permits us to propagate the changes, made on a particular process, to the rest of the processes for maintaining the relationship equilibrium of such eco-system. Our …

Space-Time-Frequency Trellis Coding For Multiband Ofdm Ultra Wideband Wireless Systems, Phuc Ngoc Le, Le Chung Tran, Farzad Safaei

Dr Le Chung Tran

In this paper, the application of space time trellis codes to multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing ultra-wideband (MB-OFDM UWB) systems is investigated. We propose a coding scheme that could fully exploit all the available channel diversity, including space diversity, frequency diversity and inter-subband diversity. Performance of the proposed system is compared with that of the conventional MB-OFDM UWB system in terms of frame error rate (FER). Simulation results show that this system outperforms the conventional one. As an example, an improvement of at least 5 dB at FER=1E-2 could be achieved over the IEEE 802.15.3a channel modes of CM1 and …
