Introduced Cyprinid (Carp) Fishes In Western Australia And Their Management Implications, K. R. Breheny
Introduced Cyprinid (Carp) Fishes In Western Australia And Their Management Implications, K. R. Breheny
Theses : Honours
Australia has no native cyprinid species and five introduced species have established self-sustaining populations. This study examines the cyprinid species present in Western Australia and estimates their distribution. The potential for introduced cyprinids to cause environmental impacts is explained and ameliorative action recommended. The presence and distribution of cyprinid species is assessed by examination of museum records, published literature, reported collections, anecdotal evidence and sampling of wetland habitats. Two species, Carassius nuratus (Goldfish) and Cyprinus carpio (Koi carp) are believed to have established populations and a map of estimated distribution is compiled. The capacity for introduced carp to undergo sudden …
Towards A Model For Software Project Estimating, Stuart Hope
Towards A Model For Software Project Estimating, Stuart Hope
Theses : Honours
The use and development of software is an integral and critical part of modern industrial society. The outcomes of many software development and maintenance projects have been less than satisfactory with significant numbers being over schedule, lacking in functionality and over budget. These problems are the result of poor management of both the process and the product. One of the major problems to overcome in the management of software development projects is the ability to predict the outcomes early in the project when there are a large number of unknowns. The ability to reliably predict the outcomes in a repeatable …
Arbitrary Views Of High-Dimensional Space And Data, Andrew Ellerton
Arbitrary Views Of High-Dimensional Space And Data, Andrew Ellerton
Theses : Honours
Computer generated images of three dimensional scenes objects are the result of parallel/perspective projections of the objects onto a two dimensional plane. The computational techniques may be extended to project n-dimensional hyperobjects onto (n-1) dimensions, for n > 3. Projection to one less dimension may be applied recursively for data of any high dimension until that data is two-dimensional, when it may be directed to a computer screen or to some other two-dimensional output device. Arbitrary specification of eye location, target location, field-of-view angles and other parameters provide flexibility, so that data may be viewed-and hence perceived-in previously unavailable ways. However, …
Temporal And Spatial Patterns In Water Chemistry, Phytoplankton Biomass And Microcrustacea In Lake Joondalup And Beenyup Swamp, Western Australia, Kimberley Upton
Temporal And Spatial Patterns In Water Chemistry, Phytoplankton Biomass And Microcrustacea In Lake Joondalup And Beenyup Swamp, Western Australia, Kimberley Upton
Theses : Honours
Lake Joondalup is one of the largest remaining permanent lakes of the Swan Coastal Plain. Despite increasing urbanisation, it supports highly diverse terrestrial and riparian communities, and an abundant and diverse aquatic fauna. However, like other wetlands of the Swan Coastal Plain, Lake Joondalup is increasingly threatened by eutrophication and degradation. The aims of this study were to describe the patterns in selected physical, chemical parameters, microcrustacean abundance and biomass of Daphnia carinata in Beenyup Swamp and the adjacent sections of Lake Joondalup; to identify the likely factors determining the patterns of phytoplankton biomass in these wetlands; and to suggest …
An Adaptive Fuzzy Logic Controller For Intelligent Networking And Control, Irshad Nainar
An Adaptive Fuzzy Logic Controller For Intelligent Networking And Control, Irshad Nainar
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
In this thesis, we present a fuzzy logic control scheme to regulate the flow of traffic approaching a set of intersections. An adaptive Fuzzy Logic Traffic Controller (FLTC) is used to adjust the green phase split of the north-south and east-west approaches of a set of traffic signals based on the actual traffic approaching the intersection. Each intersection is coordinated with its neighbouring intersections by adjusting the offset of the local intersection. The offset is adjusted by a local fuzzy logic controller loacted at each intersection. A new fuzzy control scheme, using a supervisory Fuzzy Logic Controller, is also proposed …
Variograms And Kriging In The Analysis Of Spatial Data, Suresh Tripathi
Variograms And Kriging In The Analysis Of Spatial Data, Suresh Tripathi
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This research is in the area of geostatistics and consists essentially of two parts. The first is an investigation of the variogram and cross variogram and the associated kriging and cokriging methods of spatial prediction and the second is an application of these in the analysis of two (original) data sets. In the first part (chapter 1 to chapter 5), the focus is on summarising and illustrating the various techniques of Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) and some methods used to estimate and model the experimental variograms and cross variograms for a given data set, together with some of the geostatistical …
A Search Tool To Enhance The Selection And Utilisation Of Reusable Software Modules Within The Object-Oriented Paradigm, Robert H. Cross
A Search Tool To Enhance The Selection And Utilisation Of Reusable Software Modules Within The Object-Oriented Paradigm, Robert H. Cross
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The affinity for reuse within the object-oriented paradigm may enable high levels of productivity; however, gains will become realisable only if a systems developer has access to tools which aid in the selection of classes. A method for object-oriented analysis and design is detailed and its process is assisted by an object-oriented search tool based on reference and corporate library technology. The search tool contributes to the determination of suitable existing inheritable classes and an explanation of its construction and use is included. A practical demonstration of the method, using the search tool, is elaborated. The thesis demonstrates that text …
A Functional Group Approach To Detecting Shifts In Macroalgal Communities Along A Disturbance Gradient, J. C. Phillips
A Functional Group Approach To Detecting Shifts In Macroalgal Communities Along A Disturbance Gradient, J. C. Phillips
Theses : Honours
A recently proposed hypothesis argued that morphologically and functionally similar macroalgae could be grouped to study the structure of macroalgal communities. It was argued that these functional groups can be used to predict changes to community composition that result from disturbance. This study examined whether the functional group model held in detecting changes in macroalgal community structure within one bioregion, by applying it to a habitat exposed to different levels of physical disturbance associated with wave exposure. Results obtained using a functional group approach were compared to those obtained using a species level approach. Three parallel reef lines in Marmion …
Modelling The Effects Of Rehabilitation And Changed Agricultural Practices In A Saline-Affected Rural Catchment, M. K. Heller
Modelling The Effects Of Rehabilitation And Changed Agricultural Practices In A Saline-Affected Rural Catchment, M. K. Heller
Theses : Honours
The Bremer river catchment, on the South-coast of Western Australia, is typical of most river catchments in this region in that it has been seriously affected by sedimentation, salinisation and eutrophication brought on by the gradual dominance of agricultural land management practices. Vegetated rehabilitation and changed agricultural land management practices (ie minimum / zero tillage) have now been widely adopted throughout the catchment in response to these degradation issues. This study examined the potential impact minimum / zero tillage, vegetated rehabilitation and remnant vegetation could have on both a farm and catchment wide scale. A Geographical Information System was developed …
Fuel Characteristics Of Rehabilitated Bauxite Mines In Western Australia, Sarah J. Collins
Fuel Characteristics Of Rehabilitated Bauxite Mines In Western Australia, Sarah J. Collins
Theses : Honours
This investigation assessed the fuel characteristics of Alcoa of Australia's rehabilitated bauxite mines in the south-west of Western Australia. The study determined the fuel loads, their composition and structure. The characteristics of fuel were determined, their relationship with time ascertained, and the similarity of these characteristics to the jarrah forest ecosystems that they have replaced was discussed. Pits aged from four to twenty years since rehabilitation were assessed. Predictive models were developed to allow the rapid assessment of fuel. The fuel characteristics in two controlled bum areas were also assessed to how much fuel would burn in a fire and …
Rehabilitation Of A Salt Affected Wetland, Natalie Reeves
Rehabilitation Of A Salt Affected Wetland, Natalie Reeves
Theses : Honours
There exists an urgent need to rehabilitate salt-affected and degraded wetlands in the south-west of Western Australia, particularly in water resource catchments. Various rehabilitation techniques have been developed for such areas, which address the problem of integrating water catchment management and surrounding land use. Despite this, there has been limited success in restoring salt affected wetlands in the south west region of Western Australia. This project was established to develop a method for the rehabilitation of wetlands in the south west of Western Australia, using the western Coollangatta Farmland wetland as a case study. This site was chosen because of …
The Design And Implementation Of A Toolkit For The Creation Of Virtual Environments, Jesse Kinross-Smith
The Design And Implementation Of A Toolkit For The Creation Of Virtual Environments, Jesse Kinross-Smith
Theses : Honours
Virtual Reality is a field that is steadily increasing in popularity and interest. New developments in both hardware and software have empowered developers with new devices allowing faster and better quality interaction with virtual environments. However, the emphasis of research in virtual environments has been more concerned with development of new display and input devices, as opposed to the investigation of different methods of interaction that a three-dimensional environment offers. This project designs and implements a three-dimensional, interactive, virtual environment development system upon an existing three-dimensional rendering engine. The aim of the project is to allow users to generate virtual …
Simulator For The Performance Analysis Of Cpm Schemes In An Indoor Wireless Environment, Ronald Chua
Simulator For The Performance Analysis Of Cpm Schemes In An Indoor Wireless Environment, Ronald Chua
Theses : Honours
A software simulator for characterising Continuous Phase Modulation (CPM) schemes in an indoor multipath environment has been developed using SIMULINK and MATLAB. The simulator is capable of simulating a wide range of CPM schemes to determine bandwidth efficiency and robustness to additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and Rician fading. Initial trials of the simulator indicate that the simulator is functioning correctly. Eventually, the simulator will be used to determine the most suitable modulation scheme for the development of an actual indoor wireless system.
An Investigation Into An Effective Method Of Automatically Analysing Oracle Applications To Count Function Points, J. L. Wong
Theses : Honours
Function Point Analysis (FPA) is a synthetic software estimation metric used for computing the size and complexity of applications. It was first introduced by Allan. J. Albrecht during the mid-seventies, as a result of a lengthy research based on applications that were developed using COBOL and PL/1 programming languages. The purpose of this research· is to investigate the possibility, and the most effective method, of automatically performing a Function Point Analysis on Oracle applications that consist of Oracle Forms and Oracle Reports. The research revealed a seemingly lack of other researches on this topic. As FPA was invented a few …
An Investigation Into The Use Of The Freshwater Crayfish Marron (Cherax Tenuimanus) As A Flagship For The Restoration Of The Blackwood River, Rachael Nickoll
An Investigation Into The Use Of The Freshwater Crayfish Marron (Cherax Tenuimanus) As A Flagship For The Restoration Of The Blackwood River, Rachael Nickoll
Theses : Honours
The Marron (Cherax tenuimanus) is arguably the most easily identified and ecologically important aquatic animal species in south-western Australian rivers. In fact it is quintessientially south-western Australian, endemic to the south-west corner of the continent and supporting a recreational fishery and commercial aquaculture industry within the state. Marron have keystone qualities as hosts of various epiphytic flora and fauna, and are central to the food web within south-west rivers. Their sensitivity to depleted oxygen conditions have also made them a potential "indicator" for water quality degradation. The study investigated these qualities in reference to the marron's potential as …
