Exploring The Use Of Covellite As A Proxy For Corrosion Of Native Copper By Sulphur Reducing Bacteria, Manan K. Joshi Aug 2022

Exploring The Use Of Covellite As A Proxy For Corrosion Of Native Copper By Sulphur Reducing Bacteria, Manan K. Joshi

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

We are analyzing the effect of sulphate reducing bacteria on native copper, and using that evidence to further support the initiative of having a deep geological repository to store nuclear material. Sulphate reducing bacteria are a concern for the deep geological repository as they cause the corrosion of regular copper. However native copper has gone billions of years without corrosion, which could either mean that it had not been exposed to sulphate reducing bacteria over the billions of years, or native copper is able to withstand corrosion despite the contact of sulphate reducing bacteria. We can find out by trying …

Bis(Tryptophan) Amphiphiles: Design, Synthesis And Efficacy As Antimicrobial Agents, Michael Mckeever Apr 2022

Bis(Tryptophan) Amphiphiles: Design, Synthesis And Efficacy As Antimicrobial Agents, Michael Mckeever

Dissertations

Amphiphiles play important roles in nature. These molecules contain both hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions, leading to some astonishing properties. The lipid bilayer of the cell membrane is a fascinating organization of amphiphilic phospholipids. Natural and synthetic amphiphiles, such as antimicrobial peptides, interact with the cell membrane. Such interactions can impact transport of molecules across the cell membrane, disrupting cell functions. In this work, a library of tryptophan-containing amphiphiles was synthesized and their antimicrobial properties were explored.

First, a library of bis(tryptophan) amphiphiles was synthesized. Preparation included a coupling reaction of a diamine with tryptophan residues, via their carboxy-termini, at …

Molecular Characterization Of Wild Pleurotus Ostreatus (Mw457626) And Evaluation Of Β-Glucans Polysaccharide Activities, Ghazwan Q. Hasan Ph.D., Shimal Y. Abdulhadi Ph.D. Feb 2022

Molecular Characterization Of Wild Pleurotus Ostreatus (Mw457626) And Evaluation Of Β-Glucans Polysaccharide Activities, Ghazwan Q. Hasan Ph.D., Shimal Y. Abdulhadi Ph.D.

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

Pleurotus ostreatus is a common cultivated edible mushroom worldwide. The fruiting bodies of P. ostreatus is a rich source of a β-glucans polysaccharide. The current study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of β-glucans as a natural polysaccharide produced by P. ostreatus as an antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anticancer. The molecular identification of P. ostreatus isolate was confirmed by Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) sequence. The sequence alignment and phylogenetic evolutionary relationship of studied ITS sequence were performed against some deposited sequences in GenBank. The analysis of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) as well as the result of fourier transform infrared spectroscopy …

Antimicrobial And Lipase Inhibition Of Essential Oil And Solvent Extracts Of Cota Tinctoria Var. Tinctoria And Characterization Of The Essential Oil, İshak Eri̇k, Gözde Bozdal, Sila Özlem Şener, Büşra Korkmaz, Şengül Alpay Karaoğlu, Sali̇h Terzi̇oğlu, Nuretti̇n Yayli

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The essential oil (EO) of Cota tinctoria var. tinctoria was analyzed using GC-FID / MS. A total of 51 compounds were determined from this taxon, accounting for 99.79% in hydrodistillation. Monoterpenes were the primary chemical class for the volatile organic compounds in the EO (36.1%, 13 compounds). Borneol (18.1%), camphor (14.9%), and β-pinene (11.3%) were the major components in the EO of C. tinctoria var. tinctoria. The antimicrobial activities of EO and n-hexane, acetonitrile, methanol, and water solvent extracts of the taxon were screened in vitro against ten microorganisms. The EO yielded the best activity (15 mm, 372.5 MIC, 59600 …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Teucrium species that belong to the family Lamiaceae have been traditionally used for their medicinal properties. T. polium is one the most widespread members of the genus for its use in the treatment of several diseases. In this study, the essential oil and phenolic composition of the aerial parts from T. polium were assessed by GC-FID, GC/MS, and LC-MS/MS as well as for its total phenolic content. Several extracts such as n-hexane, chloroform, methanol, and infusion were prepared and their antimicrobial, antioxidant, and also acetylcholinesterase activities were studied. According to GC/MS results, β -caryophyllene (8.8%), t-cadinol (6.2%), (E)-nerolidol (5%), α …

Biological Potential Of Copper Complexes: A Review, Jamshaid Ashraf, Muhammad Asad Riaz Jan 2022

Biological Potential Of Copper Complexes: A Review, Jamshaid Ashraf, Muhammad Asad Riaz

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

This review comprises the inorganic compounds particularly metal coordinated complexes, as drugs play a relevant role in medicinal chemistry. It has been observed that copper complexes are potentially attractive as medicinal importance. In this review, the most remarkable achievements of copper complexes undertaken over the past few decades as antimicrobial, antioxidant, enzyme inhibition activity, and anti-cancer agents are discussed. This work was motivated by the observation that no comprehensive surveys of the diversity of biological activities of copper complexes were available in the literature.

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The importance of Hypericum L. species, being used in traditional medicine, in the scientific world is increasing day by day. Hypericum species are plants that have been used in the treatment of many diseases for a long time and have healing properties. In the current study, the essential oil compositions of Hypericum scabrum L. and H. ternatum Poulter collected from different localities in Turkey were determined by GC-MS/FID. In addition, their antioxidant, cytotoxic, and antimicrobial activities with their enzyme inhibitory potentials (cholinesterase, urease, tyrosinase, elastase, and collagenase) were investigated. Also, in vitro and in silico studies of the major components …
