Mixture Models With Grouping Structure: Retail Analytics Applications, Haidar Almohri
Mixture Models With Grouping Structure: Retail Analytics Applications, Haidar Almohri
Wayne State University Dissertations
Growing competitiveness and increasing availability of data is generating tremendous interest in data-driven analytics across industries. In the retail sector, stores need targeted guidance to improve both the efficiency and effectiveness of individual stores based on their specific location, demographics, and environment. We propose an effective data-driven framework for internal benchmarking that can lead to targeted guidance for individual stores. In particular, we propose an objective method for segmenting stores using a model-based clustering technique that accounts for similarity in store performance dynamics. It relies on effective Finite Mixture of Regression (FMR) techniques for carrying out the model-based clustering with …

3d Face Reconstruction And Emotion Analytics With Part-Based Morphable Models, Hai Jin
Wayne State University Dissertations
3D face reconstruction and facial expression analytics using 3D facial data are new
and hot research topics in computer graphics and computer vision. In this proposal, we first
review the background knowledge for emotion analytics using 3D morphable face model, including
geometry feature-based methods, statistic model-based methods and more advanced
deep learning-bade methods. Then, we introduce a novel 3D face modeling and reconstruction
solution that robustly and accurately acquires 3D face models from a couple of images
captured by a single smartphone camera. Two selfie photos of a subject taken from the
front and side are used to guide our …
A Comparison Of Discriminant Function Analysis And Logistic Regression By Categorizing The Incarcerated Mentally Ill, Mona King
Wayne State University Dissertations
Both discriminant function analysis (DFA) and logistic regression (LR) are used to classify subjects into a category/group based upon several explanatory variables (Liong & Foo, 2013). Although the two procedures are generally related, there is no clear advice in the statistical literature on when to use DFA vs. LR, although LR appears to be preferred due to the claim that its underlying assumptions are more easily met (Liong & Foo, 2013). Although DFA and LR use different methods to accomplish their objectives, they can answer the same research questions (Antonogeorgos et al., 2009). This facilitates a practical comparison of their …

Kilovoltage Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy, Brian Loughery
Wayne State University Dissertations
Contrast enhanced kilovoltage radiotherapy could be a significant improvement over the standard of care in glioblastoma multiforme, but its potential benefit has been hindered by fears of insufficient dose falloff, high skin and skull dose, contrast delivery concerns, and high cost. This dissertation aims to address the validity of these fears.
Contrast delivery concerns are examined by assuming that sufficient dose can be safely delivered to the tumor. Iodine, gadolinium, and gold nanoparticle biological effect and delivery research is examined and the ideal contrast delivery methods are reported. Dose falloff and skull dose are then investigated through treatment planning and …

Advisor: Dr. Jeremy Kodanko
Major: Chemistry
Degree: Doctor of Philosophy
Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes have been frequently employed in the caging and photorelease of biologically active compounds. Traditional photocaging groups derived from Ru(II) have been largely based on bi- or tridentate ancillary ligands, and those bearing ancillary ligands with high-denticities are yet to be developed. Exploring Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes possessing ancillary ligands with high-denticities provides insight into the photophysical and photochemical properties of ruthenium complexes, which creates novel prospects in the design of …
Switching Diffusion Systems With Past-Dependent Switching Having A Countable State Space, Hai Dang Nguyen
Switching Diffusion Systems With Past-Dependent Switching Having A Countable State Space, Hai Dang Nguyen
Wayne State University Dissertations
Emerging and existing applications in wireless communications, queueing networks, biological models, financial engineering, and social networks demand the
mathematical modeling and analysis of hybrid models in which continuous dynamics and discrete events coexist.
Assuming that the systems are in continuous times,
stemming from stochastic-differential-equation-based models and random discrete events,
switching diffusions come into being. In such systems, continuous states and discrete events
(discrete states)
coexist and interact.
A switching diffusion is a two-component process $(X(t),\alpha(t))$, a continuous component and a discrete component taking values in a discrete set (a set consisting of isolated points).
When the discrete component takes a …

Doped And Chemically Transformed Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (Tmdcs) For Two-Dimensional (2d) Electronics, Sagar Prasad Paudel
Wayne State University Dissertations
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) as the semiconductor counterparts of gra-phene have emerged as promising channel materials for flexible electronic and optoelectronic devices. The 2D layer structure of TMDCs enables the ultimate scaling of TMDC-based devices down to atomic thickness. Furthermore, the absence of dangling bonds in these materials helps to form high quality heterostructures with ultra-clean interfaces. The main objective of this work is to develop novel approaches to fabricating TMDC-based 2D electronic devices such as diodes and transistors. In the first part, we have fabricated 2D p-n junction diodes through van der Waals assembly of heavily p-doped MoS2 (WSe2) …

Functional Study Of Smyd2 Glutathionylation In Cardiomyocytes, Dhanushka Nalin Perera Munkanatta Godage
Wayne State University Dissertations
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are important signaling molecules that contribute to the etiology of multiple muscle-related diseases, including cardiomyopathy and heart failure. There is emerging evidence that cellular stress can lead to destabilization of sarcomeres, the contractile unit of muscle. However, it is not completely understood how cellular stress or ROS induce structural destabilization of sarcomeres or myofibrils. Protein glutathionylation is one of the major protein cysteine oxidative modifications that play an important role in redox signaling and oxidative stress. In this report, we used a clickable glutathione approach in a cardiomyocyte cell line, and found that SET and MYND …

Integrated Strategies For Sustainable Wastewater-Based Algal Biofuel Production And Environmental Mitigation In The Us, Javad Roostaei
Wayne State University Dissertations
Integration of algae cultivation with wastewater treatment has received increasing interest as a cost-effective strategy for biofuel production. However, there has been no full assessment of algal biofuel production with wastewater on macro-scale by taking into account wastewater resources, land availability, CO2 emission resources, and geographic variation. This research addressed and evaluated the use of wastewater for algae cultivation, in terms of modeling and laboratory experiments. The first goal of this research was to develop a spatially explicit lifecycle model, by integrating life cycle assessment (LCA), and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analysis, for the evaluation of the environmental and economic …
Magnetic Moment And Susceptibility Quantification In Mri: Additional Frequency Shifts From Materials And Background Phase Removal Using A Reference Phantom, He Xie
Wayne State University Dissertations
The first part of this thesis was to utilize existing methods to remove the unwanted background phase from phantom studies. Magnetic moments of straws filled by three different materials (gadolinium, ferritin, and nanoparticles) with four different concentrations of each material were subsequently quantified at 10 different echo times, with straws perpendicular to the main magnetic field. As the radius of each straw was known, susceptibility was calculated from each measured magnetic moment. Results from different echo times agreed within uncertainties. In addition, near perfect linear relation between quantified susceptibility and concentration was obtained for each material. However, phase values inside …

Toward Better Keys For Lectin Locks: Glycoconjugates Versus Glycomimetics, Peng Wen
Wayne State University Dissertations
As one of the four major classes of macromolecule in living systems, the roles of carbohydrates as energy storage substances and structural components have long been recognized. However, the unique role of carbohydrates in cellular recognition processes has only been scrutinized since the 1960s, thanks to the progress in the research in both cell surface carbohydrates and carbohydrate-binding proteins (lectins). The advances in the research of such process demand the use of carbohydrates as basic tools. Therefore, the primary goal of glycochemistry has been to obtain complex carbohydrates and their analogs effectively. One common approach to the problem involves the …

Wayne State University Dissertations
The research discussed in this dissertation spans both synthetic inorganic and nanomaterials chemistry. Aluminum hydride complexes have been synthesized and characterized which are highly volatile and thermally stable and their potential as reducing agents for ALD of electropositive metal and metal-containing films was evaluated. A major discovery has been the deposition of aluminum metal films by thermal ALD using an aluminum dihydride complex supported by a simple amido-amine ligand (Chapters 2). Aluminum is the most electropositive element deposited by purely thermal ALD to date and represents a significant breakthrough for this field. This process may have important industrial applications and …

Wayne State University Dissertations
Electron-ion coincidence measurements in combination with 3-dimensional (3D) momentum imaging can provide comprehensive 3D-momentum information to unravel multichannel photoionization/dissociation processes, and thus is an effective tool to investigate atomic/molecular dynamics. A camera-based 3D coincidence momentum imaging system and the velocity mapping imaging (VMI) based machine were introduced in Chapter 2. Studies of strong field dissociative single and double ionization of relatively large molecules camphor and 2-phenylethyl-N, N-dimethylamine (PENNA) were carried out and illustrated in Chapter 3. We demonstrated the main products of double ionization of PENNA were singlet diradicals. In Chapter 4, a novel angle resolved-photoemission spectroscopy based on VMI …

Wayne State University Dissertations
This dissertation presents the design and synthesis of oligo-(3,5-dithio-β-D-glucopyranoside) as β-(1 → 3)-D-glucan mimetics. The synthesized dimeric, trimeric and tetrameric mimetics were tested for their binding affinities to Dectin-1 and CR3 and their abilities to activate phagocytosis and pinocytosis.
The first chapter gives an introduction of β-(1 → 3)-D-glucan. It gives an introduction about the structure and origin of β-(1 → 3)-D-glucan as well as the immunostimulating effect of natural β-(1 → 3)-D-glucan. The study of interaction between β-(1 → 3)-D-glucan and the receptors leads to a conclusion that the hydrophobicity of β-(1 → 3)-D-glucan is crucial to its immunostimulating …
Characterization Of Protonated Modified Nucleosides And Amino Acid-Linked Cisplatin Analogues Using Tandem Mass Spectrometry Complemented By Theoreticical Approaches, Chenchen He
Wayne State University Dissertations
The chemical difference between DNA and RNA nucleosides is their 2′-hydrogen versus 2′-hydroxyl substituents. The 2′-O-methylation is common among natural posttranscriptional modifications of RNA. The structures and relative glycosidic bond stabilities of the protonated forms of the 2′-O-methylated nucleosides, 2′-O-methyladenosine (Adom), 2′-O-methylguanosine (Guom), 2′-O-methycytidine (Cydm), 2′-O-methyluridine (Urdm), and 5,2′-O-dimethyluridine (Thdm) are examined using two complementary tandem mass spectrometry approaches, infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) action spectroscopy and energy-resolved collision-induced dissociation (ER-CID). Theoretical calculations are also performed to predict the structures and relative stabilities of stable low-energy conformations of the protonated forms of the 2′-O-methylated nucleosides and their infrared spectra in …

Representation Learning With Convolutional Neural Networks, Haotian Xu
Wayne State University Dissertations
Deep learning methods have achieved great success in the areas of Computer Vision and Natural Language Processing. Recently, the rapidly developing field of deep learning is concerned with questions surrounding how we can learn meaningful and effective representations of data. This is because the performance of machine learning approaches is heavily dependent on the choice and quality of data representation, and different kinds of representation entangle and hide the different explanatory factors of variation behind the data.
In this dissertation, we focus on representation learning with deep neural networks for different data formats including text, 3D polygon shapes, and brain …

Infectious diseases causing by antibiotic resistant pathogen are one of the major threat to human health and society today. Many researchers tried to develop next generation of antibiotics by reinvesting the existing antibacterial drugs. Aminoglycosides have long been used as highly potent and broad-spectrum antibiotics for treating bacterial infections. But their side effect, especially the irreversible ototoxicity, and the fast-growing resistant problem limit their application. The goal of this research was …

Stereoselective Synthesis Of Legionaminic Acid And Pseudaminic Acid Glycosides, Bibek Dhakal
Wayne State University Dissertations
Legionaminic acid (Leg) and pseudaminic acid (Pse) are deoxy acetamido analogues of the most common sialic acid, N-acetylneuraminic acid (NeuAc) that are found in microorganisms. Leg and Pse are rare but important class of sialic acids, as their glycosides are found in lipopolysaccharides and glycoproteins of several pathogenic Gram-negative bacteria including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1, Campylobacter jejuni, and Campylobacter coli. As such, the stereoselective glycosylation of the equatorial Leg and Pse donors, and the role played by their side chain conformations in anomeric reactivity and selectivity are the focus of this thesis.
Chapter two describes the synthesis of …
Hydroxylamines And Hydrazines As Surrogates Of Sp3 Carbons In Medicinal Chemistry, Sandeep Dhanju
Hydroxylamines And Hydrazines As Surrogates Of Sp3 Carbons In Medicinal Chemistry, Sandeep Dhanju
Wayne State University Dissertations
Current compound libraries that are used in high-throughput screening (HTS) are populated by low molecular weight and relatively planar compounds with high sp2 character and little stereochemical complexity. Unfortunately, such planar compounds cover only a very small corner of chemical space. In order to increase the diversity, structurally complex molecules with high fractions of sp3-hybridized atoms should be included in compound libraries. However, generating a large number of architecturally complex molecules using the current organic synthesis toolbox is considered tedious due to the requirement of multi-step synthesis. Recognizing this need, several creative strategies, like diversity-oriented synthesis, have been developed with …
Addressing The Proton Radius Puzzle Using Qed-Nrqed Effective Field Theory, Steven Patrick Dye
Addressing The Proton Radius Puzzle Using Qed-Nrqed Effective Field Theory, Steven Patrick Dye
Wayne State University Dissertations
In 2010 the first extraction of the proton charge radius from muonic hydrogen was found to be five standard deviations away from the regular hydrogen value. Seven years later, this proton radius puzzle still persists, and challenges our understanding of the structure of the proton. An effective field theory analysis using Non-Relativistic Quantum Electrody- namics (NRQED) indicates that the muonic hydrogen result can be interpreted as a large, compared to some model estimates, muon-proton spin-independent contact interaction. The muonic hydrogen result can be tested by a muon-proton scattering experiment, MUSE, that is planned at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland. …
Polarized Localization Microscopy (Plm) Detects Nanoscale Membrane Curvature And Induced Budding By Cholera Toxin Subunit B (Ctxb), Abir Kabbani
Wayne State University Dissertations
The curvature of biological membranes at the nanometer scale is critically important for vesicle trafficking, organelle morphology, and disease propagation. Many proteins and lipids interact with diverse curvature sensing and curvature generating mechanisms. Deciphering the molecular mechanisms of toxin-membrane interactions has been limited by the resolution and drawbacks of conventional experimental techniques. This study reveals the inherent membrane bending capability of cholera toxin subunit B (CTxB) through the development and implementation of Polarized Localization Microscopy (PLM). PLM is a pointillist optical imaging technique for the detection of nanoscale membrane curvature in correlation with single-molecule dynamics and molecular sorting.
PLM combines …

Wayne State University Dissertations
Predictably reliable communication in wireless networked sensing and control systems (WSC) is a basic enabler for performance guarantee. Yet current research efforts are either focus on maximizing throughput or based on inaccurate interference modelling methods, which yield unsatisfactory results in terms of communication reliability. In this dissertation, we discuss techniques that enable reliable communication in both traditional wireless sensor networks and highly mobile inter-vehicle communication networks. We focus our discussion on traditional wireless sensor networks in Chapter 2 where we discuss mechanisms that enable predictable and reliable communications with no centralized infrastructures. With the promising results in Chapter 2, we …

L p boundedness for multi-parameter singular integral operators, such as the Calderón Zygmund
operators and singular Radon transforms. In this dissertation, we will study the Hardy space H p
and its dual space associated with both the one-parameter and multi-parameter singular Radon
transforms, and consider the boundedness of the singular Radon transforms on such Hardy spaces
H p when 0 ≤ p ≤ 1.

Chemical And Physical Studies Of Charge Transfer Excited States Of Ruthenium Complexes With Aromatic Ligands, Marim Khalifa Alnaed
Chemical And Physical Studies Of Charge Transfer Excited States Of Ruthenium Complexes With Aromatic Ligands, Marim Khalifa Alnaed
Wayne State University Dissertations
The 3MLCT excited states generated from tris-bipyridineruthenium(II), [Ru(bpy)3]2+ and related complexes was ionized by 405 nm irradiation in ambient, acidic aqueous solutions. The photoionization product was Ru(bpy)3]3+ and an electron with a quantum yield of about 0.040.02 in 0.5 M acid. However, 532 nm radiation does not induce photoionization, and it generates the 3MLCT excited state that can be photoionized by 405 nm irradiation. The proton is a very good electron scavenger, and the rate of phoionization of the 3MLCT excited state was determined to be acid dependent and it increased about ten-fold for acid concentrations beween 0.001 and 4 …
