Statement of Problem

The study of conditions required for the electrodeposition of a nickel-tin alloy from baths other than the fluoride bath and the acetate bath was undertaken. The research included the correlation of thermodynamic and kinetic properties of electrode processes fro the electrodeposition of the alloy desired.

The research also included the determination of the formula and formation constant of the nickel tartrate complex. The tartrate ion was a possible constituent in a bath for the electrodeposition of the alloy.

Statement of the Problem: If a conductive sphere is placed in contact with a semi-infinite, conductive plane, the configuration constitutes a three-dimensional equipotential surface. Assuming an isolated plane to be electrically charged to a known surface charge density (σ_°) originally, it is desired to determine the effect produced by placing a sphere on the plane. Specifically, the purpose of this investigation is to determine the force exerted on the sphere normal to the plane, the total charge acquired by the sphere and the perturbation in the electrical field due to its presence on the plane.

"The short duration afterglow of an r-f discharge in mercury has been examined versus ground state mercury atom density and r-f power. The intensity of the 5771, 5462, 4360, 4079, 4047, 3907, 3651/56, 3342, and 3127/32Å atomic mercury lines were observed to decay as a function of time after the shut off of the active discharge. At temperatures below 333⁰K, all atomic lines decayed exponentially, and no molecular emission was observed. From 333⁰K to 423⁰K, the atomic lines were observed to decay rapidly initially, then exhibit an enhancement effect in intensity which was produced by metastable atom collisions, and finally, …

"Abundance of noble gases extracted from Fig Tree Shale exhibit a marked deviation from the gas content of eclogitic rocks purported to be mantle material. The abundances of the heavy noble gases in shale were found to exceed the highest known meteoritic values. The abundances of the lighter noble gases were found to be comparable to the abundances of these gases in typical chondrites.

Temperature gradient analyses show that excess heavy gases are released at low temperatures. This is interpreted to indicate a preferential adsorption of the heavy noble gases on fine-grained sediments when these gases were being released from …

"A survey of the ability of basidiomycetes to convert tryptophan, tryptamine and indole acetic acid to other acidic indoles has been made.

The product formed from tryptamine by Tricholoma nudum was identified as indole acetic acid. The product formed by Cantharellus cibarius from D-tryptophan was identified as N-acetyl-D-tryptophan. The products were purified and identified by means of paper chromatography, thin layer chromatography, infrared spectroscopy and melting points.

The conversion of tryptamine and D-tryptophan was also studied in cultures of Leucopaxillus paradoxus, Hygrophorus conicus and Naucoria confragosa. H. conicus, L. paradoxus and N. confragosa transformed tryptamine and indole acetic acid into …

"Methods for the analysis of trace elements in natural fresh waters were investigated.

Preconcentration of the water samples by reducing the volume and by using cation adsorption resins was studied. It was concluded that cation absorption was the more promising procedure.

The methods used for analysis were absorption spectrophotometry, neutron activation analysis, and atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry was considered the most suitable method for the analysis of trace elements in waters.

"In this study of the complexes of diketocyclobutenediol, squaric acid, the following original compounds were prepared: zirconyl squarate, indium (III) squarate; titanium (III) squarate, ruthenium (III) squarate, tungsten (VI) squarate, vanadium (III) squarate, and niobium (V) squarate, where squarate refers to the dianion of diketocyclobutenediol. Metal analyses were made on all of these except the ruthenium. However, only three of these metal analyses, namely those for titanium (III) squarate, indium (III) squarate, and zirconyl squarate, warrented [sic] further investigation. Carbon and hydrogen analyses were then made for these three compounds. From the percentage compositions, possible structures were proposed.

"The paragenesis of minerals occurring in the bedding-replacement fluorspar ores in the Crystal, Minerva No. 1 and Hill mines in the Cave-in-Rock district, Hardin County, Illinois, has been studied by underground, binocular, petrographic and ore microscopic examination. More than 300 hand specimens were collected from the mines, 100 thin sections were prepared and 36 polished surfaces were examined to prepare paragenetic diagrams for the Crystal and Minerva No. 1 mines.

The minerals determined in the fluorspar ores were: fluorite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, pyrite, marcasite, calcite, strontianite, witherite, barite, quartz, dolomite, oil and bitumen. Most of these minerals are present both …

"During early Pennsylvanian time the area now occupied by Concho County was a portion of the Texas peninsula, a broad, low arch with a karst topography developing on its exposed Ellenburger surface. A mid-Pennsylvanian marine transgression inundated the arch and it became an area of clear, shallow water deposition favorable to limestone development. Local sedimentation during Strawn time was largely controlled by its position relative to the Llano uplift and surrounding basins. A variety of subsurface maps were constructed for this study essentially utilizing electric log data. The results indicate that limestones of the Strawn platform facies rapidly change in …

"The petrofabrics of the host gneiss silicates and Ovate ore grains were studied in thin sections of oriented specimens collected from widely scattered positions in the iron ore deposit at Benson Mines, New York.

Ten oriented specimens selected for petrofabrics study were comprised primarily of feldspar, quartz, garnet and ores, with lesser quantities of biotite and sillimanite. Petrofabric diagrams were prepared for the orientation fabrics of magnetite and biotite in eight of the ten specimens, but sillimanite and quartz were sufficiently abundant for fabric determination in only three specimens. "Two methods of studying the spectrum in the early afterglow of a pure mercury sample are discussed. Using a time-sampling technique, information about the intensity of the spectrum as a function of time in the afterglow can be obtained. The intensities of two molecular bands, centered at 3350A and 4850A, are studied. The method of formation of the diatomic mercury molecule and the emission of radiation in the two bands are shown to be density dependent. "A computer program is presented which estimates the trend in a rectangular array of gravity measurements. It is assumed that the regional trend of gravity may be estimated by a low-order polynomial. The method of least-squares is applied to solve for the low-order polynomial which best approximates this trend. Gram orthogonal polynomials are used in the solution of this least-squares surface fit. The program is tested on a known polynomial and on some hypothetical Bouguer gravity data and found to approximate the ʺregional trend of gravity in these cases.
