Guanidines are ubiquitous in nature and have important applications in biological chemistry and industry, presenting themselves in biomacromolecules and organic materials respectively. The zwitterionic-1,3-diaza-Claisen rearrangement has allowed facile access to a variety of highly-substituted, complex guanidines, which would otherwise require a significant amount of time or resources to synthesize.

Previously, the intramolecular version of the 1,3-diaza-Claisen rearrangement has been used to generate tricyclic guanidines from bridged, bicyclic electron-deficient isothioureas. Extension of this methodology to simpler electron-deficient isothioureas has afforded stable zwitterionic intermediates, which have been isolated via silica gel column chromatography with common organic solvents. Aggregating these snapshots by studying many texts over time reveals trends in the evolution of language, culture, and society. The ever-increasing amount of electronic text, both from the digitization of books and other paper documents to the increasing frequency with which electronic text is used as a means of communication, has given us an unprecedented opportunity to study these trends. The Method of Characteristics (MoC) is a well-known procedure used to find the numerical solution of systems of hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs). The main idea of the MoC is to integrate a system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) along the characteristic curves admitted by the PDEs. In principle, this can be done by any appropriate numerical method for ODEs. This thesis aimed to model agricultural outcomes that are important to Vermont dairy farms and their surrounding communities -- runoff, erosion, nitrogen and phosphorus losses, crop yields, and timeliness of farm operations -- under a set of possible future climates. The Agricultural Policy/Environmental eXtender (APEX) model was used for this work, and the models were calibrated using data from a project that measured most of these outcomes on a set of local farms. The model setup and calibration methodology is thoroughly documented and may be a useful starting point for others who are new to agricultural modeling.

There has been increasing interest in the development of organic materials due to their unique structural and electronic properties. Organic compounds have the advantage of being able to be deposited from solution, leading to low-cost, high-area electronics production. Contorted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons have been shown to have potential for use in organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and organic photovoltaic devices (OPVs) due to their supramolecular properties and charge carrier mobilities. We describe the development of a cyber-physical system (Rehab Tracker) for improving patient compliance with at-home physical rehabilitation using neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) therapy. Transdisciplinary food systems research aims to merge insights from multiple fields, often revealing confounding, complex interactions. Computational modeling offers a means to discover patterns and formulate novel solutions to such systems-level problems. The best models serve as hubs—or boundary objects—which ground and unify a collaborative, iterative, and transdisciplinary process of stakeholder engagement. This dissertation demonstrates the application of agent-based modeling, network analytics, and evolutionary computational optimization to the pressing food systems problem areas of livestock epidemiology and global food security. Mass animal migrations represent large movements of biomass, energy, and nutrients with predictable patterns and important ecosystem-level consequences. Diel vertical migration (DVM) in aquatic systems, the daily movement of organisms from deeper depths during the day to shallower depths in the water column at night, is widespread in freshwater and marine systems. Organics recycling is increasing in New England as multiple states have enacted laws to divert organic materials, including food scraps and food processing residuals, away from landfills. Anaerobic digesters on dairy farms represent an attractive approach to food waste recycling because existing infrastructure is in place and co-digestion of dairy manure with food waste can increase renewable biogas production. In addition, anaerobic digestion results in effluents that can be separated into solid and liquid residual materials, or 'digestates'. We mined data from several public Twitter endpoints to identify content relevant to healthcare providers and public health regulatory professionals. We began by compiling content related to electronic nicotine delivery systems (or e-cigarettes) as these had become popular alternatives to tobacco products. Investigation of catalytic main-group bond forming reactions is the basis of this dissertation. Coupling of group 14 and 15 elements by several different methods has been achieved. The influence of Si–N heterodehydrocoupling on the promotion of α-silylene elimination was realized. Efficient Si–N heterodehydrocoupling by a simple, earth abundant lanthanide catalyst was demonstrated. Significant advances in hydrophosphination by commercially available catalysts was achieved by photo-activation of a precious metal catalyst.

Insights into human behavior suggest a range of cognitive biases and nonstandard preferences that offer alternative explanations for and, perhaps, strategies to influence landowner behavior. Our generalized model encompasses two special cases from the literature: a case of negligible heat diffusion in the product, for example, when the burnt product is a foam-like substance; and another case in which diffusivities in the reactant and product are assumed equal. Consumer Support For Renewable Energy Systems: A Case Study Of Community Biodigesters In Vermont, Katelynn Maria Conedera

From the steady rise in dairy farm closures to concerns over algae blooms in Lake Champlain, Vermont’s dairy industry is facing a multitude of challenges. While many potential solutions have been proposed, this study focuses specifically on community anaerobic digester systems (CADS) to aid in manure management, help to mitigate runoff, produce renew energy, and even provide an alternative revenue source to participating farms. CADS technology converts the gas emissions from manure and other organic substances into biogas through a process called anaerobic digestion.
