A Study Of A Reimaging System For Correcting Large-Scale Phase Errors In Reflector Antennas, Eugene F. Lauria Jan 1992

A Study Of A Reimaging System For Correcting Large-Scale Phase Errors In Reflector Antennas, Eugene F. Lauria

Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014

This thesis investigates a new approach for dealing with the adverse effects of large-scale deformations in the main reflector of large Cassegrain antennas. In this method, the incident aperture distribution is imaged onto a tertiary focal plane. This is accomplished by using an optical imaging system consisting of a lens mounted behind the Cassegrain focus of the antenna. The lens forms a real image of the product of the incident aperture distribution and the pupil function of the antenna. The pupil function describes the profile of the main reflector of the antenna. If the incident aperture distribution is a plane …

What To Do With Scrap Tires In The 1990'S Technology, Market And Policy Considerations, Umass Amherst Center Economic Development Jan 1992

What To Do With Scrap Tires In The 1990'S Technology, Market And Policy Considerations, Umass Amherst Center Economic Development

Center for Economic Development Technical Reports

The purpose of this report was to look at the issue of what to do with the millions of scrap tires in surplus, and those added to the waste stream each year. The report goes on to identify and evaluate the options with regards to the reusing and disposing of scrap tires, discuses and evaluate the recycling of tires as a tool to generate economics development in Western Massachusetts, and explores the current options for disposal of existing tire stockpile.

Using Water For Local Economic Development, Umass Amherst Center Economic Development

Center for Economic Development Technical Reports

This report was meant to evaluate the quality and the quantity of water available to the city of Springfield, Massachusetts. The report looks at the demand for clean water, and how the city provides it to the residents of the city.

Determination Of Arsenic In A Nickel Alloy By Flow Injection Hydride Generation Atomic Absorption Spectrometry, Julian Tyson, C P. Hanna, S G. Offley Jan 1992

Determination Of Arsenic In A Nickel Alloy By Flow Injection Hydride Generation Atomic Absorption Spectrometry, Julian Tyson, C P. Hanna, S G. Offley

Chemistry Department Faculty Publication Series

The development of a method for the direct determination of trace arsenic quantities in nickel alloy digests, by flow injection hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry, is described. An optimization study of the manifold and chemical parameters produced system performance, in terms of tolerance of the nickel matrix and sensitivity, such that matrix removal and pre-reduction of As(V) to As (111) prior to arsine generation were eliminated. Full recovery of the As(V) signal from a solution containing 5 ng m1- 1 in the presence of 60 µg mJ- 1 nickel was obtained. Validation of the method was achieved by analyzing a …

Putting The Chemistry Back Into Analytical Chemistry, Julian Tyson Jan 1992

Putting The Chemistry Back Into Analytical Chemistry, Julian Tyson

Chemistry Department Faculty Publication Series

Aspects of the current status of and research in analytical chemistry are briefly discussed and the need for cost effective analytical procedures is emphasized. The present and future of a number of aspects of flow-injection analysis are considered. These include the basic theory, the kinetic features, the control features, time-based methodology, and the coupling of sample pretreatment with instrumentation. Several aspects of this latter topic are considered with particular reference to the flow-injection atomic spectrometry combination. Problems of kinetic mismatch between chemistry, manifold residence, and instrument operation are discussed and some possible solutions proposed including the use of closed loop …

Supercritical Carbon Dioxide As A Carrier For Sample Introduction In Atomic Absorption Spectrometry, S. R. Bysouth, Julian Tyson Jan 1992

Supercritical Carbon Dioxide As A Carrier For Sample Introduction In Atomic Absorption Spectrometry, S. R. Bysouth, Julian Tyson

Chemistry Department Faculty Publication Series

The use of a supercritical carbon dioxide carrier to transport organic solutions of metal complexes to a heated restrictor is demonstrated as a means of aerosol or vapour generation for sample introduction in flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Calibrations obtained using conventional pneumatic nebulisation of continuously aspirated solutions or using flow injection into a water carrier are compared with those obtained using the carbon dioxide carrier. Injection of solutions of copper pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate in 4-methyl pentan-2-one into a carbon dioxide carrier at 1000 p.s.i. was shown to be 1.2 times more sensitive than injection of the same solutions into a water carrier …

Closed-Loop Recirculating Manifold For Matrix Isolation In Flow Injection Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. Analysis Of Silver Electrolysis Solutions, Ebenezer Debrah, Julian Tyson, Mw Hinds Jan 1992

Closed-Loop Recirculating Manifold For Matrix Isolation In Flow Injection Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. Analysis Of Silver Electrolysis Solutions, Ebenezer Debrah, Julian Tyson, Mw Hinds

Chemistry Department Faculty Publication Series

Two flow injection procedures have been investigated for the determination of some elements in silver electrolysis solutions, for which the problem of the formation of silver acetylide needs to be addressed. A single line manifold was found to give acceptable results for limited time periods, but for prolonged operation it was necessary to remove the silver. This was achieved with a recirculating reactor in which the silver was precipitated as the chloride and retained on a filter of nylon fibers. Good recoveries of copper, iron, nickel and zinc from solutions containing up to 100 g/l. silver were obtained with over …

Bar-Spheroid Interaction In Galaxies, Lars Hernquist, Martin D. Weinberg Jan 1992

Bar-Spheroid Interaction In Galaxies, Lars Hernquist, Martin D. Weinberg

Astronomy Department Faculty Publication Series

The secular evolution of barred galaxies is explored using N-body simulation and linear analysis. In particular, we examine the interaction between bars and spheroidal components of galaxies. According to our calculations, this interaction drives secular transfer of angular momentum from bars to spheroids, primarily through resonant coupling. A moderately strong bar, having mass within corotation ~0.3 times the enclosed spheroid mass, is predicted to shed all its angular momentum typically in less than ~10^9^ yr, which is quite short compared to the ages of galactic disks. Even shorter depletion time scales are found for relatively more massive bars. Given that …

Horizons Inside Classical Lumps, David Kastor, Jennie Traschen Jan 1992

Horizons Inside Classical Lumps, David Kastor, Jennie Traschen

Physics Department Faculty Publication Series

We investigate the possibility of having horizons inside various classical field configurations. Using the implicit function theorem, we show that models satisfying a certian set of criteria allow for (at least) small horizons within extended matter fields. Gauge and global monopoles and Skyrmions satisfy these criteria. Q balls and boson stars are examples which do not and can be shown not to allow for horizons. In examples that do allow for horizons, we show how standard "no hair" arguments are avoided.
