Comparison Of A Modified And Traditional Rapid Infiltration Basin For Treatment And Control Of Nutrients In Wastewater Effluent, Jessica Cormier
Comparison Of A Modified And Traditional Rapid Infiltration Basin For Treatment And Control Of Nutrients In Wastewater Effluent, Jessica Cormier
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Rapid infiltration basins (RIB) have been historically used in Florida for groundwater recharge, effluent disposal, or a combination of both. However, this technique has proven ineffective in providing nitrogen control unless the RIB is modified in some manner. In this study, a traditional RIB was compared to a modified RIB constructed with manufactured biosorption activated media (BAM) to evaluate nitrate removal from reclaimed water. The RIBs are used for reclaimed and excess storm water disposal. Few, if any, studies have been published where BAM-modified RIBs have been used for this purpose. In this work, a mixture of clay, tire crumb, …
D-Fens: Dns Filtering & Extraction Network System For Malicious Domain Names, Jeffrey Spaulding
D-Fens: Dns Filtering & Extraction Network System For Malicious Domain Names, Jeffrey Spaulding
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
While the DNS (Domain Name System) has become a cornerstone for the operation of the Internet, it has also fostered creative cases of maliciousness, including phishing, typosquatting, and botnet communication among others. To address this problem, this dissertation focuses on identifying and mitigating such malicious domain names through prior knowledge and machine learning. In the first part of this dissertation, we explore a method of registering domain names with deliberate typographical mistakes (i.e., typosquatting) to masquerade as popular and well-established domain names. To understand the effectiveness of typosquatting, we conducted a user study which helped shed light on which techniques …
Analysis Of Nucleus Properties Of The Enigmatic Comet 29p/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1, Charles Schambeau
Analysis Of Nucleus Properties Of The Enigmatic Comet 29p/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1, Charles Schambeau
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
We present results from a continuing effort to understand activity drivers for the enigmatic Comet 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1 (SW1). SW1 has been of interest since its discovery almost 100 years ago because of its nearly continuous, quiescent activity beyond the water-sublimation line and its highly variable, outburst activity while receiving a nearly constant insolation due to its low eccentricity orbit. These characteristics make SW1 a useful target for investigating both distant cometary activity drivers and also cometary outburst behavior. We approach answering these questions through a detailed analysis of SW1; first by measuring nucleus properties required for a more accurate nucleus …
Room Temperature Operation Of Quantum Cascade Lasers Monolithically Integrated Onto A Lattice-Mismatched Substrate, Rowel Go
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCLs) are semiconductor devices that, currently, have been observed to emit radiation from ~ 2.6 μm to 250 μm (1 to 100 terahertz range of frequencies.) They have established themselves as the laser of choice for spectroscopic gas sensing in the mid-wavelength infrared (3-8 μm) and long-wavelength infrared (8-15 μm) region. In the 4-12 μm wavelength region, the highest performing QCL devices, in terms of wall-plug efficiency and continuous wave operation, are indium phosphide (InP) based. The ultimate goal is to incorporate this InP-based QCL technology to silicon (Si) substrate since most opto-electronics are Si-based. The main …
Intensive Land Use And Conservation Planning At The University Of Central Florida, Chelsea R. Piner
Intensive Land Use And Conservation Planning At The University Of Central Florida, Chelsea R. Piner
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
Conservation strategies are necessary for cities to meet regional goals of sustainability, but commitments and collaborative efforts among influential stakeholders for economic and developmental growth frequently hinder conservation efforts. This study analyzes how planning documents influence conservation at the University of Central Florida (UCF). I use an inductive method of analysis to explore the stated conservation goals and commitments of UCF's Campus Master Plan. I then compare these objectives with the behaviors of the institution. This research indicates that the absence of collaborative efforts among agencies has resulted in UCF undermining its academic mission. Intensive land-use has sparked global environmental …
An Iteratively Reweighted Least Square Implementation For Face Recognition, Jie Liang
An Iteratively Reweighted Least Square Implementation For Face Recognition, Jie Liang
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
We propose, as an alternative to current face recognition paradigms, an algorithm using reweighted l₂ minimization, whose recognition rates are not only comparable to the random projection using l₁ minimization compressive sensing method of Yang et al [5], but also robust to occlusion. Through numerical experiments, reweighted l₂mirrors the l₁solution [1] even with occlusion. Moreover, we present a theoretical analysis on the convergence of the proposed l₂approach.
Numerical Solutions To Hall Magnetohydrodynamic Equations Near An X-Type Magnetic Neutral Line, Kyle Reger
Numerical Solutions To Hall Magnetohydrodynamic Equations Near An X-Type Magnetic Neutral Line, Kyle Reger
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
The Hall Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model is a new paradigm for describing fast magnetic reconnection processes in space and laboratory plasmas. Current sheets form and store enormous amounts of magnetic energy at X-type magnetic neutral points, which is released as magnetic storms when the sheets break up. The fast magnetic reconnection process impacts solar flares and Earth's geomagnetic sub-storms, which affect global weather. The fast magnetic reconnection process also influences fusion reactors, which may be used as a future energy source. Numerical analysis of approximate solutions to the Hall MHD equations at X-type magnetic neutral points offer these solutions further credence …
Application Of Transformations In Parametric Inference, Naomi Brownstein
Application Of Transformations In Parametric Inference, Naomi Brownstein
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
One can apply transformations of random variables to conduct inference for multiple distributions in a few simple steps. These methods are used routinely in maximum likelihood estimation but are rarely applied in other statistical procedures. In this project, transformations of variables were explored and applied to derivations of the best unbiased estimators, Bayesian estimators, construction of various kinds of priors, estimation and inference in the stress-strength problem. First, general results were obtained on the application of transformations of random variables to the derivation of numerous statistical procedures. Second, common distributions and the relationships between them were listed in a table. …
Analytical And Numerical Investigations Of The Kudryashov Generalized Kdv Equation, William Hilton
Analytical And Numerical Investigations Of The Kudryashov Generalized Kdv Equation, William Hilton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis concerns an analytical and numerical study of the Kudryashov Generalized Korteweg-de Vries (KG KdV) equation. Using a refined perturbation expansion of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) equations of motion, the KG KdV equation, which arises at sixth order, and general higher order KdV equations are derived. Special solutions of the KG KdV equation are derived using the tanh method. A pseudospectral integrator, which can handle stiff equations, is developed for the higher order KdV equations. The numerical experiments indicate that although the higher order equations exhibit complex dynamics, they fail to reach energy equipartition on the time scale considered.

Obesity is one of the most prevalent health conditions. About 30% of the world's and over 70% of the United States' adult populations are either overweight or obese, causing an increased risk for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. Among all cancers, lung cancer is the leading cause of death, whereas pancreatic cancer has the poorest prognosis among all major cancers. Early diagnosis of these cancers can save lives. This dissertation contributes towards the development of computer-aided diagnosis tools in order to aid clinicians in establishing the quantitative relationship between obesity and cancers. With respect to obesity and …
Machine Learning Methods For Flow Cytometry Analysis And Visualization, Emily Sassano
Machine Learning Methods For Flow Cytometry Analysis And Visualization, Emily Sassano
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Flow cytometry is a popular analytical cell-biology instrument that uses specific wavelengths of light to profile heterogeneous populations of cells at the individual level. Current cytometers have the capability of analyzing up to 20 parameters on over a million cells, but despite the complexity of these datasets, a typical workflow relies on subjective labor-intensive manual sequential analysis. The research presented in this dissertation provides two machine learning methods to increase the objectivity, efficiency, and discovery in flow cytometry data analysis. The first, a supervised learning method, utilizes previously analyzed data to evaluate new flow cytometry files containing similar parameters. The …
Impact Of Ionizing Radiation And Electron Injection On Carrier Transport Properties In Narrow And Wide Bandgap Semiconductors, Jonathan Lee
Impact Of Ionizing Radiation And Electron Injection On Carrier Transport Properties In Narrow And Wide Bandgap Semiconductors, Jonathan Lee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the minority carrier properties of wide and narrow bandgap semiconductors. Included specifically are wide bandgap materials GaN and β-Ga2O3, and narrow bandgap InAs/GaSb type-II strain-layer superlattice. The importance of minority carrier behavior in bipolar device performance is utmost because it is the limiting component in current conduction. The techniques used to determine minority carrier properties include electron beam induced current (EBIC) and cathodoluminescence (CL) spectroscopy. The CL spectroscopy is complemented with time-resolved CL (TRCL) for direct measurement of carrier radiative recombination lifetime. The minority carrier properties and effect of high energy radiation is explored. The GaN TRCL …
Exploring Natural User Abstractions For Shared Perceptual Manipulator Task Modeling & Recovery, Senglee Koh
Exploring Natural User Abstractions For Shared Perceptual Manipulator Task Modeling & Recovery, Senglee Koh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
State-of-the-art domestic robot assistants are essentially autonomous mobile manipulators capable of exerting human-scale precision grasps. To maximize utility and economy, non-technical end-users would need to be nearly as efficient as trained roboticists in control and collaboration of manipulation task behaviors. However, it remains a significant challenge given that many WIMP-style tools require superficial proficiency in robotics, 3D graphics, and computer science for rapid task modeling and recovery. But research on robot-centric collaboration has garnered momentum in recent years; robots are now planning in partially observable environments that maintain geometries and semantic maps, presenting opportunities for non-experts to cooperatively control task …
Advancements In Liquid Chromatography For The Determination Of Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds In Environmental Samples, Hugh Hayes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation is to provide a new and improved analytical methodology for the analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polycyclic aromatic sulfur heterocycles (PASHs) in environmental samples. Hundreds of PAHs and PASHs are present in the environment and have great toxicological importance and the chemical determination of these components is a priority. The complete normal-phase liquid chromatography (NPLC) retention behavior has been explored for these compounds. Retention indices were determined for 124 PAHs, 62 methyl-PAHs (MePAHs), 67 PASHs, and 80 alkyl-PASHs on an aminopropyl (NH2) stationary phase which represents the most comprehensive study of polycyclic aromatic …
Compiler Design Of A Policy Specification Language For Conditional Gradual Release, Manasa Kashyap Harinath
Compiler Design Of A Policy Specification Language For Conditional Gradual Release, Manasa Kashyap Harinath
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Securing the confidentiality and integrity of information manipulated by computer software is an old yet increasingly important problem. Current software permission systems present on Android or iOS provide inadequate support for developing applications with secure information flow policies. To be useful, information flow control policies need to specify declassifications and the conditions under which declassification must occur. Having these declassifications scattered all over the program makes policies hard to find, which makes auditing difficult. To overcome these challenges, a policy specification language, 'Evidently' is discussed that allows one to specify information flow control policies separately from the program and which …
An Examination Of Beta Diversity Indices And Their Predictors In Two Large-Scale Systems, Philip Schroeder
An Examination Of Beta Diversity Indices And Their Predictors In Two Large-Scale Systems, Philip Schroeder
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Biodiversity is what conservation biology was developed to conserve. It is the physical manifestation of life as a concept and, be it for practical or idealistic reasons, all conservationists seek to protect or, in some cases, enhance it. Because of its monolithic importance to the field, much effort has been expended trying to better measure and understand it. Recently, greater attention has been paid to the partition of diversity; the observation that the total diversity of a system (γ) can be broken down into within-site diversity (α) and between-site diversity (β). In particular, it has been noticed that the β …

Mathematical Foundations Of Adaptive Quantum Processing, Daniel Bonior
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Quantum information has the potential to revolutionize the way we store, process, transfer and acquire information [1,14,15,21,37]. In particular, quantum information offers exciting new approaches to secure communication, computation and sensing. However, in order to realize such technologies, we must first understand the effect that environmental noise has on a quantum system. This dissertation builds upon recent studies that have explored the underlying structure of quantum information and the effects of qubit channels in quantum communication protocols. This work is divided into five main chapters, with Chapter 1 being a brief introduction to quantum information. We then begin Chapter 2 …
Tuning Chemical And Optical Properties Of Nanomaterials: From Extended Surfaces To Finite Nanoclusters, Zahra Hooshmand Gharehbagh
Tuning Chemical And Optical Properties Of Nanomaterials: From Extended Surfaces To Finite Nanoclusters, Zahra Hooshmand Gharehbagh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Modifying the electronic and optical properties of surfaces and nanostructures are in the forefront of surface science. This dissertation's focus is on this problem. The first part is on the adsorption of functionalized naphthalene molecules on Cu(111) surface. The results show that changing the functional group results in modification of charge redistribution at the interface of molecule and surface and the electronic structure of Cu changes. The second part discusses the new Moire structure of h-BN on Rh(111) induced by intrinsic carbon impurities of Rh single crystals. We found that these impurities intercalate between h-BN and Rh(111) with new local …

Development Of A Tabletop Coherent Soft X-Ray Source, Hanfu Kong
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this thesis is to design a tabletop coherent soft X-ray source for attosecond high resolution imaging. We collect signals from gas cells with different length and lens with different focal length. A spectrometer with a grating and a CCD camera is applied to observe and measure the spectrum of the X-ray attosecond pulses. This thesis first introduces the theory background of ultrafast lasers, then mainly explains high harmonic generation, which is the key method for attosecond pulses generation, subsequently presents the experiment system and analyzes the results from the experiment, also compares different combinations of parameters of …
Quasi-Gorenstein Modules, Alexander York
Quasi-Gorenstein Modules, Alexander York
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis will study the various roles that quasi-Gorenstein modules and their properties play in the study of homological dimensions and linkage of modules. To that effect we begin by studying these modules in their own right. An R-module M of grade g will be quasi-Gorenstein if ExtiR(M, R) = 0 for i 6= g and there is an isomorphism M ∼= ExtgR(M, R). Such modules have many nice properties which we will explore throughout this thesis. We will show they help extend a characterization of diagonalizable matrices over principal ideal domains to more general rings. We will use their …
In-Memory Computing Using Formal Methods And Paths-Based Logic, Alvaro Velasquez
In-Memory Computing Using Formal Methods And Paths-Based Logic, Alvaro Velasquez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The continued scaling of the CMOS device has been largely responsible for the increase in computational power and consequent technological progress over the last few decades. However, the end of Dennard scaling has interrupted this era of sustained exponential growth in computing performance. Indeed, we are quickly reaching an impasse in the form of limitations in the lithographic processes used to fabricate CMOS processes and, even more dire, we are beginning to face fundamental physical phenomena, such as quantum tunneling, that are pervasive at the nanometer scale. Such phenomena manifests itself in prohibitively high leakage currents and process variations, leading …
Terahertz Emission From The Intrinsic Josephson Junctions Of High-Symmetry Thermally-Managed Bi2sr2cacu2o8+D Annular Microstrip Antennas, Sheila Bonnough
Terahertz Emission From The Intrinsic Josephson Junctions Of High-Symmetry Thermally-Managed Bi2sr2cacu2o8+D Annular Microstrip Antennas, Sheila Bonnough
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The intrinsic Josephson junctions in the high transition temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ (BSCCO) have shown great potential for oscillators emitting in the terahertz frequency. The radiation frequency satisfies the conditions for both the ac Josephson effect and for a mesa cavity resonance mode. The observed angular dependence of the emissions from some mesa imply that the ac Josephson effect plays the primary role in a dual source radiation mechanism. But the integrated emission power had generally been significantly below the 1 mW level suitable for many applications. This output power can be enhanced by a suitable design of an array of …
Weierstrass Vertices And Divisor Theory Of Graphs, Ajani Ruwandhika Chulangi De Vas Gunasekara
Weierstrass Vertices And Divisor Theory Of Graphs, Ajani Ruwandhika Chulangi De Vas Gunasekara
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Chip-firing games and divisor theory on finite, connected, undirected and unweighted graphs have been studied as analogs of divisor theory on Riemann Surfaces. As part of this theory, a version of the one-dimensional Riemann-Roch theorem was introduced for graphs by Matt Baker in 2007. Properties of algebraic curves that have been studied can be applied to study graphs by means of the divisor theory of graphs. In this research, we investigate the property of a vertex of a graph having the Weierstrass property in analogy to the theory of Weierstrass points on algebraic curves. The weight of the Weierstrass vertices …
Non-Hermitian Optics, Absar Ulhassan
Non-Hermitian Optics, Absar Ulhassan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
From the viewpoint of quantum mechanics, a system must always be Hermitian since all its corresponding eigenvalues must be real. In contrast, the eigenvalues of open systems-unrestrained because of either decay or amplification-can be in general complex. Not so long ago, a certain class of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians was discovered that could have a completely real eigenvalue spectrum. This special class of Hamiltonians was found to respect the property of commutation with the parity-time (PT) operator. Translated into optics, this implies a balance between regions exhibiting gain and loss. Traditionally, loss has been perceived as a foe in optics and something …
Undergraduate Student Agreement With Reformed Introductory Physics Classes, Matthew Wilcox
Undergraduate Student Agreement With Reformed Introductory Physics Classes, Matthew Wilcox
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this study, I investigate student "buy-in", defined as students' proper understanding of and agreement with the class format, for introductory studio physics classes that incorporate lectures, labs, and group problem-solving activities into one interactive environment. I also investigate the ways in which instructors try to gain student buy-in to their class. Research has shown that student resistance to reformed instruction is a barrier to an instructor's use of research-based instructional strategies that are common to the studio class. Expectancy value theory suggests that by gaining student buy-in to the reformed class format, student resistance will decrease thus allowing a …

Information security programs are instituted by organizations to provide guidance to their users who handle their data and systems. The main goal of these programs is to protect the organization's information assets through the creation and cultivation of a positive information security culture within the organization. As the collection and use of data expands in all economic sectors, the threat of data breach due to human error increases. Employee's behavior towards information security is influenced by the organizations information security programs and the overall information security culture. This study examines the human factors of an information security program and their …
Hilbert Series Of Graphs, Hypergraphs, And Monomial Ideals, Kyle Trainor
Hilbert Series Of Graphs, Hypergraphs, And Monomial Ideals, Kyle Trainor
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, identities for Hilbert series of quotients of polynomial rings by monomial ideals are explored, beginning in the contexts of graph and hypergraph rings and later generalizing to general monomial ideals. These identities are modeled after constructive identities from graph theory, and can thus be used to construct Hilbert series iteratively from those of smaller algebraic structures.

Power Scaling Of High Power Solid State Lasers., Bumjin Oh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The solid-state laser is one of the most widely used lasers in scientific research and industrial applications. This thesis describes detailed investigations of two modern architectures of high power cw solid-state lasers, a 20 W diode-pumped Yb:YAG thin disc laser and 300 W diode-pumped Nd:YAG rod laser. With the thin disc laser architecture, the signal beam must fit to the pump area on the disc defined by the multi-pass diode pump configuration. The beam propagation, beam diameter, phase and thermal effects for various cavity configurations are investigated theoretically and experimentally. In addition, the internal loss, small signal gain, and thermal …

From Excited Charge Dynamics To Cluster Diffusion: Development And Application Of Techniques Beyond Dft And Kmc, Shree Ram Acharya
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on developing reliable and accurate computational techniques which enable the examination of static and dynamic properties of various activated phenomena using deterministic and stochastic approaches. To explore ultrafast electron dynamics in materials with strong electron-electron correlation, under the influence of a laser pulse, an ab initio electronic structure method based on time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) in combination with dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) is developed and applied to: 1) single-band Hubbard model; 2) multi-band metal Ni; and 3) multi-band insulator MnO. The ultrafast demagnetization in Ni reveal the importance of memory and correlation effects, leading to …
Investigating Compositional Variations Of S-Complex Near-Earth Asteroids: (1627) Ivar, Jenna Jones
Investigating Compositional Variations Of S-Complex Near-Earth Asteroids: (1627) Ivar, Jenna Jones
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
We seek to investigate the complexity and heterogeneity of the surfaces of near-Earth asteroids (NEAs). In particular, we are studying the S-complex NEAs, which account for a large portion of the observed near-Earth objects. Here we present our results for (1627) Ivar, an Amor class NEA with taxonomic type Sqw. In 2013, Ivar's large size and close approach to Earth (minimum distance 0.32 AU) provided an opportunity to observe the asteroid over many different viewing angles for an extended period of time. We collected delay-Doppler radar images and Doppler spectra using the Arecibo Observatory's 2380 MHz radar, and, by incorporating …
