The formation of carbonaceous by-products (e.g. soot) during the operation of an internal combustion engine is unavoidable and the aggregation of this soot leads to deleterious effects including abrasive wear of the engine, increased oil viscosities, and sludge deposition. Dispersants, which are composed of a hydrophobic tail and a polar headgroup, are used as oil additives to aid in the suspension and stabilization of the soot particles. Polyisobutylene succinimide (PIBSI) is the most well-studied class of dispersants and is characterized by a linear architecture and polyamine headgroup that interacts with soot by acid-base and dipole-dipole interactions. Polyisobutylene (PIB) is a fully saturated, aliphatic polymer of high commercial importance due to its superior gas barrier properties and high chemical/oxidative stability. One commercial end-use for PIB is in insulated glass windows (IGU), where it acts as a gas/moisture barrier and sealant. Under certain adverse conditions, catastrophic failure of the PIB sealant may result in aesthetic and functional failure of the IGU, which necessitates replacement of the unit. Thus, there exists a need to improve current generations of thermoplastic PIB sealants to be able to withstand the harsh environments found in current real-world applications.

In the first project, we demonstrated a new reaction, which is a subset of the Friedel‑Crafts alkylation reaction, in which the alkylating carbocation undergoes a cleavage reaction prior to reaction with the aromatic substrate. This reaction was discovered by the observation that when a PIB containing a large amount of coupled fraction was subjected to a mixture of protic and Lewis acids (HCl/TiCl4) in the presence of an alkoxybenzene compound, the coupled fraction was quantitatively converted to its constituent monofunctional chains, which became functionalized by the alkoxybenzene.

Multifunctional polyisobutylenes (PIBs) are of great academic and commercial interest. Current methods to create these materials currently utilize prohibitively expensive synthetic strategies. Recently, Storey et al. reported a novel method for the synthesis of multifunctional PIB which is more commercially viable than the current methods. For this research, the material produced via this technique was utilized to create a thermally reversible crosslinked system using Diels-Alder chemistry. To achieve this, a bromide-functional polyisobutylene obtained via electrophilic cleavage and functionalization of butyl rubber was split into two portions and further functionalized. Polyisobutylene (PIB) is a saturated hydrocarbon elastomer that can only be produced by cationic polymerization. The water-initiated, chain transfer controlled synthesis conducted on an industrial scale produces monofunctional PIB with mixed olefin end groups. Living cationic techniques produce mono- and di-functional telechelic PIB. In situ quenching is the process of adding functional molecules to the polymerization reactor after all monomer is consumed. These quencher species bond to the chain ends, installing their latent functionality onto the polymer chain. To date, all quenchers utilized have been soft π-nucleophiles.

Polyisobutylene (PIB), available solely by living carbocationic polymerization (LCP), is a commercially important polymer with excellent thermal stability, good flexibility and extraordinary impermeability to gases. Due to these attractive properties, coupling PIB to other polymer blocks is expected to result in new and useful products. Two types of new dual initiators possessing initiating sites for both LCP and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), have been designed for the preparation of AB linear and A2B miktoarm star copolymers, where A is PIB-based block copolymer that grows cationically and B is polyacrylate or other radically-derived polymer block, without intermediate modification.
