Squillites Spinosus (Syncarida, Malacostraca) And A New Unnamed Crustacean From The Mississippian Of Central Montana, Joan Matthews Rumore
Masters Theses
A Mississippian syncarid from the Heath shale, Squillites spinosus Scott, 1938, is redescribed and a discussion of some aspects of Syncarid phylogeny is given. Modern Syncarid biogeographical distribution is discussed and an analysis of these zoogeographical patterns is provided. A strange animal, Crustacea (incerta sedis) from the Heath shale is described in as far as is possible.
In 1971, Dr. Richard Lund of the University of Pittsburgh while searching for fossil fish in the Upper Mississippian Heath Shale of Montana found the associated remains of fossil crustaceans. Two locations were involved, T14 N R20E sec. 28, Fergus County, Montana, 2 …

The Hemoglobin Of Tubifex Tubifex, Lalitchandra Vrajlal Vora
The Hemoglobin Of Tubifex Tubifex, Lalitchandra Vrajlal Vora
Masters Theses
The hemoglobin of Tubifex tubifex is found in solution in the blood of the worm in cells as in vertebrates. The binding of oxygen to the hemoglobin can be followed spectrophotometrically. A peak of absorbtion at 540 nm is fairly constant under different condition, while a peak at 575 nm disappears from the spectrum when oxygen is removed. The hemoglobin contains heme, non-heme iron and protein.
Binding of oxygen to the hemoglobin was found to be dependent on the concentration of the hemoglobin, at low concentrations (4.16 x 10-6 M), oxygen could not be removed from the hemoglobin. Only …
The Conductance Of Some Non-Rigid Bolaform Electrolytes, William Terry Schmidt
The Conductance Of Some Non-Rigid Bolaform Electrolytes, William Terry Schmidt
Masters Theses
Bolaform electrolytes are those which contain two or more charges separated by an inert framework. These are intermediate in structure between simple electrolytes and polyelectrolytes. Since these are similar to both synthetic and biological electrolytes, this investigation has been undertaken to determine some of their properties in solution.
The sodium and magnesium salts of ethane, propane, butane, pentane, hexane and decane α,ω-disulfonates were prepared. Each acid was prepared by refluxing the α,ω-dibromide of the desired salt with sodium sulfite. The sodium and magnesium salts were prepared by ion-exchange techniques.
The conductance of each salt was determined in methanol utilizing the …
Equilibrium And Kinetic Study Of The Substitution Reactions Of Pentacarbonylaminetungsten (O) With Triphenylphosphine, William O. Bailey
Equilibrium And Kinetic Study Of The Substitution Reactions Of Pentacarbonylaminetungsten (O) With Triphenylphosphine, William O. Bailey
Masters Theses
A kinetic and equilibrium study of the reaction of triphenylphosphine (PPh3) with pentacarbonylaminetungsten (O) [(CO)5WNH2C6H5] has been reported previously. Equilibrium constants for the reaction (CO)5WNH2C6H5 + PPh3 = (CO)5W[P(C6H5)3] + C6H5NH2 in toluene were reported to be 17.1, 49.2 and 65.7 respectively. In addition, the entropy change (ΔS) for the reaction was found to be 86±5 cal mol-1 deg-1.
In this study the above reaction was …
Water Quality And Benthos Of A Small East Central Illinois Stream, With A Selected Literature Review, Kenneth Lloyd Brummett
Water Quality And Benthos Of A Small East Central Illinois Stream, With A Selected Literature Review, Kenneth Lloyd Brummett
Masters Theses
Polecat Creek is an occasionally intermittent stream which drains approximately 18,368 acres in eastern Coles County, Illinois. It travels 15.2 miles through cropland and a partially wooded valley before it enters the Embarrass River 3 miles upstream from Lake Charleston. The stream ranges from 0.5 foot to 5 feet deep at a normal water level, with an average depth of 16 inches. It averages 12 feet wide, with a range from 4 to 20 feet.
A water quality study with 5 stations along the stream was conducted from January 1971 to July 1971. A qualitative benthos study at the same …
Range And Optimum Growth Concentrations Of Phosphate And Nitrate For Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Thomas E. Hill
Range And Optimum Growth Concentrations Of Phosphate And Nitrate For Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Thomas E. Hill
Masters Theses
A study was conducted on the alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii to determine the range and optimum growth concentrations of phosphate and nitrate. There are only a few species of algae for which this type of data is known. Inorganic nutritional data is basic to the understanding of the complexities of phytoplankton ecology and eutrophication.
The "plus" strain of this heterothallic alga was cultured in a TRIS-buffered inorganic medium with various concentrations of sodium phosphate and potassium nitrate and adjusted to a pH of 7.4. The axenic cultures were evaluated at the end of 6 days with a spectrophotometer, at a wavelength …
