Modeling Factual Claims With Semantic Frames: Definitions, Datasets, Tools, And Fact-Checking Applications, Fatma Arslan Aug 2021

Modeling Factual Claims With Semantic Frames: Definitions, Datasets, Tools, And Fact-Checking Applications, Fatma Arslan

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations

As social media sites have become major channels for the quick dissemination of news, misinformation has become a significant challenge for our society to tackle. Today fact-checking rests primarily on the shoulders of human fact-checkers who laboriously sift through various trustworthy sources, interview subject experts, and check references before reaching a verdict regarding the degree of truthfulness of a factual claim. Compounded with the speed and scale at which misinformation spreads, the demanding process may leave many harmful factual claims unchecked. In the fight to curb the spread of misinformation, researchers from various disciplines have come forward to assist fact-checkers …

Classification Of Factual And Non-Factual Statements Using Adversarially Trained Lstm Networks, Daniel Obembe Aug 2020

Classification Of Factual And Non-Factual Statements Using Adversarially Trained Lstm Networks, Daniel Obembe

Computer Science and Engineering Theses

Being able to determine which statements are factual and therefore likely candidates for further verification is a key value-add in any automated fact-checking system. For this task, it has been shown that LSTMs outperform regular machine learning models, such as SVMs. However, the complexity of LSTMs can also result in over fitting (Gal and Ghahramani,1997), leading to poorer performance as models fail to generalize. To resolve this issue, we set out to utilize adversarial training as away to improve the performance of LSTMs for the task of classifying statements as factual or non-factual. In our experiment, we implement the adversarial …

Frameannotator - A Web-Based Frame Semantic Annotation Tool, Sarbajit Roy May 2019

Frameannotator - A Web-Based Frame Semantic Annotation Tool, Sarbajit Roy

Computer Science and Engineering Theses

News headlines around the world are alarming. They aim to trigger emotional responses from the consumer. In an era where news and social media posts spread so quickly, it is often difficult to distinguish between what is real and what is false. Human fact-checking fails to cope with the growth of such unprecedented information, thus increasing the demand and various steps of automatic fact-checking to judge the veracity of claims. An automatic fact-checking system is a statistical model that can help to detect misinformation. The current state-of-the-art frame semantic parsers suffer from lack of a large annotated data-set and there …

Claimportal: Building A Social Media Analytics System For Assisting Fact-Checking, Sarthak Majithia May 2019

Claimportal: Building A Social Media Analytics System For Assisting Fact-Checking, Sarthak Majithia

Computer Science and Engineering Theses

We are in a digital era where claims made by people can attract attention and spread like wildfire. Misinformation and disinformation about important social and political issues can be intentional and motive can be malicious. Thus, we built a Twitter monitoring platform, namely, ClaimPortal. It assists its users by searching, checking, and providing analytics of factual claims made by politicians and influential people on Twitter. ClaimPortal empowers users with a search API which enables filtering conditions such as date range, tweets from/mentioning specific users, keyword based search, hashtags, check-worthiness scores, and types of claims. We explain the architecture of ClaimPortal …

Toward Automated Fact Monitoring And Checking, Naeemul Hassan Aug 2016

Toward Automated Fact Monitoring And Checking, Naeemul Hassan

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations

Public figures such as politicians make claims about "facts" all the time. Oftentimes there are false, exaggerated and misleading claims on important topics, due to careless mistakes and even deliberate manipulation of information. With technology and modern day media helping spread information to mass audiences through all types of channels, there is a pressing need for checking the veracity of factual claims important to the public. Journalists and citizens spend a good amount of time doing that. More and more dedicated platforms and institutes are being created for fact-checking. This nascent genre of investigative reporting has become a basic feature …
