Horizontal Phase Speed Distribution Of Gravity Waves Observed In Mesospheric Temperature Maps, Ahmad Talaei, Mike Taylor, Pierre-Dominique Pautet, Yucheng Zhao, Takashi S. Matsuda, Takuji Nakamura
Horizontal Phase Speed Distribution Of Gravity Waves Observed In Mesospheric Temperature Maps, Ahmad Talaei, Mike Taylor, Pierre-Dominique Pautet, Yucheng Zhao, Takashi S. Matsuda, Takuji Nakamura
Ahmad Talaei
The goal of the current work is to develop a method suitable for analyzing the horizontal phase speeds of atmospheric gravity waves from an extensive amount of gravity wave data obtained by the USU Advanced Mesospheric Temperature Mapper (AMTM) from Logan, Utah and South Pole, Antarctica. AMTM is a novel infrared digital imaging system that measures selected emission lines in the mesospheric OH (3,1) band to create intensity and temperature maps of the mesosphere. This analysis builds on the recent work by Matsuda et al. using all-sky (180° field-of-view) intensity data to investigate the gravity waves horizontal phase speed distribution. …

Radioprotective Effect Of Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid) And Some Myriad Enzymes, Nkiru F. Opara Jarlath
Radioprotective Effect Of Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid) And Some Myriad Enzymes, Nkiru F. Opara Jarlath
Nkiru Opara
It is observed that vitamin C has similar structure with that of melatonin, from chemistry point of view compounds of similar structure has the same chemical properties but different physical properties. This is a research on the radioprotective effect of vitamin C / glutathione and some free radical scavengers. Radiation in human body is a process where energy emitted by one body travels in a straight line through a medium or through space. It is energy in the form of particles or waves. It is emitted naturally in sunlight and is also made by man for use in X-rays, cancer …

Challenges Associated With Space Weather Analysis And Prediction, John Lanicci
Challenges Associated With Space Weather Analysis And Prediction, John Lanicci
John M Lanicci
The term “space weather” is typically used to describe environmental conditions in the region extending from the sun’s surface, through the interplanetary medium, to the earth’s magnetic field and upper atmosphere, with a focus on those conditions that can affect the earth, its technological systems, and population. Space weather conditions are monitored continuously by a number of agencies around the world. These agencies use both satellite- and ground-based measurements to build analyses and employ predictive models that form the basis for impacts-based products dealing with myriad users in satellite operations, the utility industry, aviation, and satellite-based communications, to name a …
Sound And The Moving Image:Critical Characteristics For Spectator Response, Kara Rader, Rafeeq I. Roberts, Matt Egizii, Jeffery Allen
Sound And The Moving Image:Critical Characteristics For Spectator Response, Kara Rader, Rafeeq I. Roberts, Matt Egizii, Jeffery Allen
Rafeeq I Roberts
The prevailing wisdom in the film and video production industries is that audio information outweighs visual information when it comes to spectator responses, but there are few empirical studies to support this claim. In previous research, four critical characteristics of sound have been identified: (1) Music, (2) visual/sound contradictions (defined as sound that is inconsistent with audience expectations based on visual information), (3) multi-channel sound, and (4) sound quality. Building on our previous research into music and film, we have found that many researchers have looked into the question of how music affects emotions (Eschrich et al., 2008; Have, 2008; …

Collaborative Chemical Information Literacy: Is It "Scholarly?", Barbara C. Harvey
Collaborative Chemical Information Literacy: Is It "Scholarly?", Barbara C. Harvey
Barbara C. Harvey
This symposium illustrates a collaborative classroom activity that incorporates information literacy into an introductory chemistry course. The primary learning outcomes of the activity are to understand the peer-review process, knowing how to locate original research articles based on “clues” in a general news article, and how to differentiate between popular and scholarly periodicals. Students work in small groups in a highly-collaborative classroom setting. Each group is given a recent chemistry-related news item, and must determine how and where to find the original research article the news item is based on. Emphasis is placed on identifying original, peer-reviewed research publications. Each …

Satellite And Ground-Based Measurements Of Mesospheric Temperature Variability Over Cerro Pachon, Chile (30.3° S), Jonathan R. Pugmire, Michael J. Taylor, Yucheng Zhao, P Dominique Pautet, James M. Russell Iii

Observations of mesospheric OH (6,2) rotational temperatures by the Utah State University Mesospheric Temperature Mapper (MTM) located at the Andes Lidar Observatory, Cerro Pachon, Chile (30.3° S, 70.7° W) reveal a large range of nightly variations induced by atmospheric gravity waves and tides, as well as strong seasonal oscillations. This study investigates MTM temperature variability over the past 4 years comprising over 800 nights of high-quality data and compares the results with MTM measurements from Maui, Hawaii (2001-2005) and coincident mesospheric temperature measurement by the SABER instrument on the NASA TIMED satellite.
Bedrock Strength And River Morphology Datasets For The Colorado River System, Natalie Bursztyn, Joel Pederson
Bedrock Strength And River Morphology Datasets For The Colorado River System, Natalie Bursztyn, Joel Pederson
Natalie Bursztyn
There has been renewed debate over the mechanisms and timing of both uplift and erosion in the Interior West. Yet, in order to understand the region’s long-term landscape evolution and patterns of topography a third factor of bedrock properties must be considered. We are completing a large dataset of bedrock strength and exploring it in the context of reach-scale topographic metrics for the upper Colorado River system. Included are rock-strength measures such as laboratory tensile strength, Schmidt-hammer compressive strength, approximate shale proportion, and Selby rock mass strength classification. To estimate the strength of units too incompetent to test directly, such …

Comparative studies with other data sets including the satellite-borne SABER instrument show good agreement on nightly, as well as seasonal, temperature measurements.
